  1. Not sure why people just jump to conclusions, head gasket, new engine, why don't you have someone figure out what's actually wrong with it. Is there coolant in the oil? Is the coolant running out somewhere else? I would find it hard to justify going through the hassle of swapping the engine unless it's totally fucked.

Not sure I trust them, but 2 different mechanics said it is blown head gasket.

FWIW, I was able to test drive it to auto zone and back.

It started to get hot on the gauge but I made it back before into the red.

  2. If it's a V6. OP didn't specify what kind of engine we're dealing with. Weren't they offering them with Ecotecs in 2001 as well? But otherwise yeah I agree on the LIM gasket. THat gasket is a nasty bitch on the V6. I had the distinct DISpleasure of replacing one on an Oldsmobile Silhouette once.

No more GM cars for me

car-part isn't prompting for alternate engines. This appears to be a 3.1L V6

  3. My nephew just got his license and his car started overheating and coolant would be dry right away. One opinion said it was a blown head gasket. The check engine codes showed many misfires too. That could be unrelated and need plugs/wires etc, but thought I would mention it.

    2001 Chevy Malibu with ~150k

They all appear to have the same engine in that generation/year.

I started looking on car-part to see how much a used engine costs.

I found one nearby with 17k on it for $350.

Is this the best route? If not, what do you recommend?

If this is the best route, I need to find a reasonable installer. The vehicle is in Chillicothe where he lives, but I suppose we could tow it up to Columbus.

Who could do the install and how much?

    Thanks!

    EDIT:

Bummer, it was a typo. It has 116k miles.

    what should we do?

Seems like a lot of money going into an engine that will likely have the same issue soon....

Update: The mechanic says it has a cracked head.

  4. Wow I need this guy to come out once we find the one we think we want......

Bought a house 1.5 years ago. I made a list and did this at each house:

Tools to bring: Screw driver, flashlight, Outlet tester, tape measure, Camera

    1. Ground slope from away from house:

    2. Water damage in basement or attic?

    3. Gutter/Roof shape? Good drainage? Shingles square?

    4. Jump in rooms, do they move?

    5. Water: Turn on. Brown or smells?

-How fast does it get hot?

    -Pressure? Toilet fills?

-Water hammering when slam water off/on?

-Flush toilet with shower on, scalding?

    6. Doors/Windows Open/close well. Calking around win? Double Pane?

    7. Details: Moldings, trim, quality parts, fixtures installed with care?

    8. Electrical: lots of outlets? installation? GFI in baths?

-100 amp service? Separate garage service?

    9. Baths: New, old, easy to update. Access to wet wall

    10. Furnace: Age, clean, type, all rooms heated? AC?

    11. Insulation: Attic, walls, basement. At least 12”

12: Flooring. Type? What is under carpet? Hardwood type? Refinished?

    13. Garage: Door works, insulated? Sloped for drainage? Outlets?

    14. Handrails: needed on more then 2 steps and good shape? Banisters sturdy?

    15. Decks: shape, footings, board shape, nails popping?

    16. Exterior: Soffets, drainage, slope, masonry, landscape, sprinkler

    17. Kitchen: hardware on doors, draws slide easy, counter top material, doors straight

    18. Mold/Termites in basement. Bang hammer/screwdriver on joists to check for rotten wood.

  5. While I have a couple referrals from family and friends, I realized you all would have some good input. Unless we find a great for sale buy owner place, I think it will be ideal to have a buyer's agent.

I found a few threads and read them:

I definitely want a kick-ass home inspection as one of those threads talked about.

I'd love to hear some good success stories. I'd like someone that is a full time realtor, not just one that does it on the side and is unable to show us homes on our schedule. At this point I've done some basic searching and selected a few houses on realtor.com I'd like to see. I also looked on zillow, for sale by owner, craiglist, and trulia.

We are currently thinking Dublin/Worthington/Hilliard. We really like Dublin schools, but nothing is set in stone. We really like Grandview Heights, Upper Arlington, and Bexley , but not seeing any houses in our price range we like.

I see some ideal spots with Columbus/Powell Taxes but with Dublin/Worthington Schools. I'd also love to try my best to avoid rush hour traffic jam nightmares.....

We are starting from scratch, so we need to secure financing too, so someone knowledge on that is required.

This person Nitrousbird talked about sounds awesome:

PM me and I will send you contact information about my Realtor.

She gets things done. Examples, DIRECTLY FOR ME:

    - Sold our condo when the other two units on the market couldn't sell for the same money, one having a lot more money/updates invested in it (this was a year ago when the market was much worse than it was).

    - Only reason we got our current home is because of her.

    - She is a pit-bull (will fight for you), has a lot of connections, and eats, lives, and breathes being a realtor. She works 7 days a week, literally.

    - Will tell you how it is. No sugar coating, and if something about the house isn't right, she will suggest what to do about it.

DO NOT pick a realtor because it is some dude's wife that you know, or a friend of the family. Pick someone that is recommended by someone who has actually used them.

MKVAaron on here used her as a buyer's agent, and has said he is very happy with the result.

  6. How can I watch this game from home tonight?

I have TW internet only, no cable TV. The game is on ESPN. Besides going to a bar/elsewhere , how can I watch this game?

I do have a Sony Blu-ray player that acts and feels like a PS3. I use Serviio through it. I could also connect my laptop to my TV via HDMI if needed.

Will ESPN3 play the game or something similar? I have access to my parents TW login info as they have ESPN cable TV through TW....

  7. Eventaully hope to play PC again, but my PC is just too outdated. It is nice having less hackers/cheaters on the PS3 compared to PC though.

I have Ghosts for PS3 on preorder, but I play BO2 right now. I only Hard Core TDM and KC.

I have a PS3 with an Asus VS229H-P monitor via HDMI (smaller monitors are better IMHO) . Paired with my Astro Mixamp, Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 , Xim Edge, Logitech G400, and a mechanical keyboard. It is like shooting a fish in a barrel against those joystick players.

Please let me know if anyone plays on PS3, my PSN is Prodeje79 , put in msg you are from CR.

  8. Basically there is no good way to get to the North side above Polaris. I drive 71-gemini-Polaris-Old State every single day. It's a parking lot some days, and others not too bad. I'm there right around the 5:15 pm timeframe. I believe there is a proposed exit either at Big Walnut or Cheshire someday. If this happens then that road needs double lanes from 71 to 23 on that rd. Dreaming though...

Also a proposed extension of Gemini to Worthington rd is in the works. A developer is wanting to build up that area where the old Polaris Amphitheater is. Doubt it gets approved.

Good stuff! Where is info on that? Looking on odot...

  9. My wife does that with Worthington to Africa 90% of the time. When they had Africa shut down she started using Worthington to Powell Road that worked out well too. She also does Bale Kenyon Road off Worthington to Lewis Center(this is only a back up cause it is hard to turn left at that last turn onto Lewis Center, and watch school times too!). Hope this helps!

    Thanks!

I tried that route last Friday as I made a stop at Sharon woods. It worked out well.

  10. I've been trying different ways coming from 315/Ackerman Rd. Perhaps there is no super secret route.....

I thought I would try here. I tend to cut across to 71, then take 71N to Gemini to Polaris to Old state, and it sucks.

I'd love to here some alternatives from people that also go this way.

I think getting off at Polaris is not an option.

I am wondering if could take 270 Cleveland Ave exit north up to Polaris. Then from there try Africa or Worthington Rd......

Or Maybe get off at 315/161 or 71/161 and take some back roads. It does seem that Huntley/Worthington Galena is jacked up though.....
