  1. I keep seeing a reference to 3/32nds difference being the tread depth on an edge online, but don't quote me on that. If he's really worried, he could have the new tire shaved to match the others.

I think I found the same information as you. I got him calmed down I think. This was just something I haven't heard about this in forever and wondered if it was still a true statement or not.

  2. overall diameter "should" be roughly the same size for an AWD car, but there is some tolerance. BMW's factory AWD cars with 18" rims in staggered sizes has an estimated .4% difference in diameter from the factory.

The logic is that the difference in tire sizes will stress the transfer case or transmission and eventually lead to failure. In some cases like subaru this is to true it's almost a religion, in others it's more of a semi-strict guideline.

What kind of car is it? Each mfg has it's own tread depth measure tolerance for it's cars and you usually can find that info in the service manual. Generally speaking on a subaru all tires have to have a circumference within 1/4" (2/32nd tread depth) of each other, audi's run a little looser at 1/2" (4/32nd tread depth).

It sounds like the car has a part time AWD system and it's either FWD or RWD unless there is a loss of traction, and someone hasn't been rotating the tires. He can try rotating the tires with the most tread to the drive wheels and check it until it balances out.

he should also check that all tires are the same pressure since pressure affects tire diameter and tread depth.

Ford Edge. I believe one tire was brand new, the rest were around 6-8/32nds, according to his text.

  3. When did you last change the tranny oil? If you can't remember you may want to change it 3 times over a course of a few days driving to gently clean it out.

Odyssey is every 30 k and we have not been religious about doing it but always do timing belt/Oil and stuff we can see, go figure.

Turns out the axle seal is bad and is draining transmission fluid. New seal and I'm having new fluid put in too. We will see how it goes I guess.

  4. A buddy of mine just picked up a couple year old SUV that has computer-controlled AWD (no buttons/dials). The tires on it are all the same size and make, but they have slightly different tread depths. Now he is worried because he's always been told that the tires all have to be the same or it will throw off/damage the system. Is that even true anymore? I remember hearing about it back in the day, but thought I'd ask since I wasn't able to give him a definite answer.
  5. We had my wife's previous, previous Odyssey at Roush for the same issue, plus serious 3-4 shift issues, plus all kinds of dash lights. Roush quoted a new transmission, plus labor. We sold it for nothing, and told the new owner it needed a transmission. I ran into the new owner three months later, and he told my that Germain Honda put two solenoids in it, and it ran like new.

Long story short, get a second opinion if you feel you need to, and Odyssey transmissions sucked until 06+.

    Thanks,

    Tom

This. I was a detailer at a Honda dealer for a couple of summers in college and they had two guys who would do nothing but replace transmissions in second gen Odysseys and first gen Pilots. Honda stepped up and took care of a lot of people though, I have to give them credit for that.

Probably never had it done. At least while we've owned it. Never did it on her previous CR-V either and it had 160k on it when we traded it in without issue.

  7. I'd do the same thing you would every year, but once they got bought out, they wouldn't budge. They even tried to switch me from my TWC bundle to theirs, which was more money. I told them I will be switching my provider then and they didn't even bat an eye. Switched to WOW and when I called to have everything turned off, they didn't give a damn. No "How can we keep you?". Just turned me off and said goodbye. I'd dump them if you can.
  8. So I am sure many of you recall a few of my posts about the a-hole neighbors behind us. Seen here:

Well, we noticed it's been pretty quiet lately. Too quiet. Something isn't right. Tells you what kind of world we live in when I said to my wife, "I wonder if it was a murder suicide situation in there. All their corpses are in the house partially decomposed." Then the more sensible part of me took hold and I decided to look and see if their house had sold or something. Sure enough, it's for sale now. Must have moved to their new spot while in the process of trying to sell their house.

None of us are going to want to live next to you after reading about what you've been doing to them.

  9. You know it brother. 9 seats for all the bitches a 16 year old could muster. Which was none in my case.

Ours was gray with a whorehouse red interior, but otherwise this was it. God I hated that car, but it certainly had presence.

How could you hate such a thing?
