You didn't say if track car meant HPDE or autocross. If you're an autocross guy, I highly recommend the Focus ST. I know, fwd, but they are really great cars. Stock they're slower than a 2006 VW GTI with 200hp and 207tq, but with about 3k in bolt ons, they're torque monsters.

A nice R/T is over 50k so...

How serious are you trying to be here? Let's be honest, tires are great, but is your skill there? I'm in no way trying to say you aren't, I simply don't know. You'd be surprised what a decent set of summers (HTRZ3, Indy 500s) or even the budget tires that bump you into a different class (Nexus Sur4, federal rsrr, etc) can do. Are you competing for a trophy or national scca run? if not, I'd re-evaluate where you put your money, honestly.

For some perspective, my s550 GT with just lighter wheels weighed in at 3,670lbs.

I'm pretty irritated I didn't read this thread earlier... I saw him and had a brief superficial exchange this past weekend. Fail.

Mk5 and up vws are significantly larger inside than a focus. Especially the 2 doors, gets the b pillar behind you, tons of room. No way I'd buy a focus st over a mk7 GTI pp. Big brakes, lsd, faster, more comfy and interior? Not even close.
