Technic and other off shoots of traditional lego's have been around forever, and are absolutely real legos. I grew up with the traditional legos, so thats what I prefer. I completely agree. Not a technic fan in general. These large kits are cool, but I'm a traditional lego guy.

Pretty sure the technic have never been conventional blocks. They do sell big kits using the regular blocks too, its just harder to get the complex shapes of out of them.
