http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/ded_speech_JPG_667x667_q100.jpg I only became acquainted with David Davis's writing in the last few years in Winding Road and more recently in Car & Driver. It seemed to me that he had met all the giants of the automotive world, drove all the great cars, seduced hundreds of Bond women, drank deep into the world's finest vintages ...... I thought his writing got better and better the closer he got to the death he knew awaited him (he had bladder cancer). In any case, here are some quotes from a tribute to him from Winding Road. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/03_05_A_jpg_667x667_q100.jpg Sometimes, when I can’t sleep at night, I close my eyes and run movies of great cars on great roads on the insides of my eyelids. I can feel the lateral acceleration. I can sense the moment when they roll out of the brakes and re-establish their trajectory through the second half of the S-bend. I’d like to be as fast as my heroes, but I don’t mind the fact that I’m not. I’ll put my joy of driving up there against theirs any day. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/DED_CAR_jpg_667x667_q100.jpg God does not charge us for hours spent driving before breakfast http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/DED-turkey_old-racecar003__jpg_667x667_q100.jpg Every time I meet some new car that intrigues me, one of my first thoughts is, “What’ll it be like on the run from New York to Los Angeles?” And, just often enough to keep the mind alive, I get to find out. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/DED_02_jpg_667x667_q100.jpg I say the daily press should confine its troubled musings to the eternal issues, like skin blemishes, erectile dysfunction, and world peace. They have my permission to discuss the automobile business, but when they start talking about the automobiles themselves, they quickly get beyond their depth. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Picture_1____png_667x667_q100.jpg There is no such thing as a bad automobile show. From GM’s early-Fifties Motorama to the 1954 Herb Shriner Show at New York’s Grand Central Palace, to the major international shows of the twenty-first century, I defy you to step across the threshold into that vast hall full of shiny cars and excited people and not feel your pulse kick up and your step quicken. — http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/untitled-1.jpg Some experiences are hard to describe, but the experience of hurrying down a high-crowned country road—in some places little more than a country lane—driving just fast enough that you’re unwilling to look down at the speedometer; being able to see three distinct changes of direction coming up in the next half-mile; is sheer paradise.

From over SEVEN weeks ago (February 6th): Bon appétit, my young friend

As should be obvious, I did not approve this message. I've no desire to be a mod. A good mod needs to be firm, fair, consistent, knowledgeable (cars and computers), hard-working and in touch with the majority of the members. Fortunately, CR has mods who already have those things covered. I'm not so good at any of those things, and I march to the beat of a different accordian. And most of us who enjoy CR take the mods for granted, love to snipe at them, treat them like $10 hookers until we want something, then we're all kissy-kissy when we want them to fix something for us. I appreciate what they do and know I couldn't do as well as they do on their worst day. Gabe, :gtfo:

Thoughts/Comments on 1970-80's Triumph Spitfire cars
Doc1647545523 replied to Rustlestiltskin's topic in Passing Lane
Sean knows quite a bit about them. And if there's any area he's weak on, he can refer you to someone who knows more. Sean "Crossle" http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/member.php?u=3354 -
I could see his point of view. I'm usually pretty patient with folks .... just was trying to get the car fixed and kept getting interrupted. If I'd known he was a car guy, I would have taken the time. And, truth be told, I can be a pompous bunghole. About five minutes later a man and his teenage daughter asked about the car and what I use on the wheels because they had problems keeping her car wheels clean. As I recall I gave them about 3 minutes worth of pointers, and they were grateful. I guess they seemed more sincere. They weren't nosey, they just wanted some help.

Funny you should ask. Auto Zone insisted they had a $110 battery which would do the trick (keep in mind, this battery is about the size of a motorcycle battery). After removing my defective battery, they realized that nothing would fit --- bracket is welded to other parts and not adjustable--my battery cable connectors couldn't be spread wide enough to accomodate the new battery's posts........ we're going in and out of the store to try to find some parts to make it all work ......... then this guy comes up and says, "What kind of a car is that?" Wanna tackle it at the Hilliard shop on Friday?

I have to admit, the OP's story is true and without distortion. It was the third time I was asked that same question in the store in 2 minutes. The employee even commented that it must get old (being asked over and over by the same person). I'm usually pretty nice if someone starts with a compliment, or even something that I can twist into a compliment. "Now that's something you don't see every day. What kind of a car is that?" or "Hey, I like your car. What is it?" But it usually goes like this: What's that? It's a Viewt. What? A Viewt. A Vue? That's not a Vue. No. It's a Viewt. Like the word "view" but with a T on the end. Who makes it? Mitsuoka. Who? (slowly and sounding out each syllable) Mitsuoka. Mitsubishi? No. Mitsuoka. Where's it made? In Japan. It's British, isn't it? No. It's from Japan. It looks British. I think it's weird. How much did it cost? Have a nice day.

Well, you didn't expect Sam to ever be slow at anything, did you?

Chris, AJ, you're always welcome. Chris, you did more to your car in two hours than I can do on one of mine in a whole day!

good looking ride -- glad you landed something nice in the trade

Thanks for the offer, but I had other commitments for early evening. You missed a good clean-up, though. Three cars washed, one clay barred, two interiors and one cleaned his wheels as well. Burned one stogie. Lots of good car talkin' and music and we all stayed warm

Front door (glass) is unlocked. Building 100. Suite 104

Glad you're coming .... got an engineering question on the Viewt I need your opinion on. Got your band's CD on the system now, matter of fact.

Being busy is a good thing. You're welcome anytime.

I'm heading to my garage at noon today to start cleaning my rides. If you need a heated space to clean your interior, I can make room and provide the basic materials. If you want to hand wash your car, got that covered, too. If you need to use the ozone generator for smells, it's available. Takes about an hour, and the car needs to be sealed during that time. It'll be a waste of your time if you haven't already shampoo'd the fabrics (carpet, cloth seats). I'm sure I'll get tired and sore and will soon start sitting around and smoking cigars. So you're welcome to come by and visit. Park in the front on the pavement. I'm not serving food & drink, but there's a McDonald's nearby. Sunday March 27, 2011, noon - 4 p.m. Howald Industrial Park 320 London Road, Suite 104 (corner of London and Liberty Roads) Delaware, Ohio 43015 Call me for directions or if you have problems getting in the building: 740-405-5565

Surprised you're sellin' it -- had heard it generated a lot of cash in rentals

if by "put pods on for now" you mean bet a drawing hand based on pot odds, then it would be good to remember Algren's 3 rules of life ......

Thanks for the interest, Justin. Appreciate it. But right now, the bike isn't actually for sale, except to Dennis. My plan for it was cafe conversion, like another one that a friend is finishing up right now. Frankly, I felt bad buying it from Dennis last year, although at the time, it wasn't fitting into his overall plan. I've been in the same postion myself, years ago .... couldn't justify keeping a toy around all winter that I couldn't ride, and wanted/needed the money for something else. Come to think of it, I'm still in that position a lot, just with a few zeroes at the ends of the numbers. If Dennis ends up not wanting it, I'll give you a price. I'll let you know in a week or so. I feel the least I can do is give him some time to decide if he wants his old bike back. I'm sure you understand. P.S. If you decide you can part with the scrilla to buy the only Ducati 999 to complete an Iron Butt ride, shoot me a number.

Would like to help, but I wouldn't have much use for a muzzle loader or an rc truck .... I barely have the dexterity to drive, let alone manage one of those. If someone were interested in those and you could sell them, the offer stands.
-
Dennis, I never re-titled your '82 Suzi I bought off of you last August. It's been sitting in my heated garage since then, was ridden once by a friend from CR who was practicing his street riding. If you want to buy it back for the same price you sold it, drop me a PM. I've taken the battery out and kept it on a charger, and it's had one issue that I'm aware of since then that I would want to resolve before selling it back to you. If I keep it, it goes back into the queue to be converted to a cafe racer.

That ain't nothin'. It got dark as night around 2:30 today in Delaware, then this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7As_q6PSKSM Yeah, you'll have that sometimes.

Very cool. Congrats!

Even the supermoon was no match for your radiance tonight, my inamorata. The wait to see you again will seem an eternity to me. Goodnight, goodnight, parting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.

Leave that boy-toy of yours at home tonight, and come ride with me in the luxury you deserve. We'll be awash in the moonlight, adrift on a sea of hand-stitched leather, surrounded by every amenity worthy to a princess of your stature ......
