  1. All,

I'm trying to get my exhaust built for the upcoming Auto-X season.

I have a custom 2 to 1 3" Burns Y-Pipe merge, 3" 100 Cell Cat, and a 3" Borla XR-1 Muffler I need welded together. It's a pretty simple fabrication, it would dump right before the rear axle.

Prefer Mandrel Bend, SS. Since I'm up in Cleveland I'd need to travel down on a weekend and get the work down, somehow.

    Thoughts?

Also, if you know anyone in Cleveland willing to do the work I'd take that recommendation as well.

  2. Badass congrats.

I decided my current build will be competing in auto-x. Any idea what class a motor swapped E30 would fall in and how competitive it would be?

If it's swapped you'll instantly be in SM, street mod. Unless you want to throw paper at the car, it won't be very competitive.

  3. Impressive standings! Cool how a properly set-up 128 does that much damage...

Aside from cost, was the 128 always the plan (over a 135)?

Still learning the car, I think I found some additional tweaking out at Lincoln that I can apply here.

I bought the 128 as a lemon law car actually, so cost helped a ton.

The 135 is classed into STU, which is fairly difficult to compete in because you can't fit big enough tires to become competitive. Plus I wanted to avoid issues of N54/55 engines. Mine has been bulletproof

  4. I figured I'd share my 128i that I built for SCCA Solo STX Class since the season is over for me. Some of you know the car, but I like showing it off..

Car recently won the ProFinale and Overall Championship for ProSolo in Lincoln, NE as well as 5th/58 in the STX field during Nationals. Wish I could place better at Nationals but there is next year:

  5. RS3v2s need to be sprayed on a 40 second autocross course. The constant heat cycling they experience from heating up, cooling to ambient is not good for the tire.

On a RS3v2 you'll see 100 runs on the tire before they heat cycle out and fall on their face. You'll know it too.

My RE-71Rs have been pryometer temps of 140*F, and only get faster. Haven't even sprayed yet in 85F conditions and the tire is sticky as can be.

Anyways, my RE-71Rs with 60 runs on them. Need to flip after this weekend.

  6. Hankook was the tire last year. Now this year they are a second behind the top tire, seriously.

I've seen 1.41 G peak max in turns and 1.2 Gs constant loading throughout the turn.

Bridgestone nailed the tire this year. If you aren't running the tire you're not going to be at the top of your game. Easy as that.

  7. I'm so sick of the meteorologists in town. They start talking about it a week out, then come crunch time it's all a bunch of hot air (figuratively, of course). Abc6 prides itself on not blowing weather out of proportion, but they were getting their collective panties in a bunch just like the rest of them.

The only time they need to get excited is when the public is going to be hindered for multiple days, not when "Monday's drive to work might be a little more difficult than usual."

    Currently in Cleveland

  8. Ever consider some type of Project Management? You see a ton of field time out of the office, hands on type of work.

I'm a very new engineer in the career field (graduated in May '13). ME by degree but I work in the energy field for commercial HVAC. I personally love it, but it's a lot of desk time currently, starting to shape my career to more field and design.

Becoming an engineer without a degree is very doable. Just gotta work your day up. My dad's a living example. Never went to college, self taught.

  9. Heat pumps are very inefficient in cold weather.

Electricity on a per Btu content is a 3rd less than Natural Gas. Meaning Natural gas contains 3 times as much energy on like for like basis. Also, even with more energy content natural gas is cheaper too (actually much, much cheaper). So when you're thinking about it, you're using more electricity (3 times as much as gas) to heat the same amount of air that is costing you much more. Kind of sucks...

Anyways, the issues with heat pumps is that they cannot recover in cold temperatures. If you turn off a unit in the cold, and expect it to catch up it simply can't. You'll lose the building or space.

Unfortunately I don't know much on residential units. But you're probably locked out on OA temperature or something

  10. OK, so I'm fine spending the coin on the larger filter if that is what is needed. Just wasn't sure if the smaller one was rigged up like that because it's an acceptable alternative.

Are any of you speaking from experience (as in, it's your trade) in the field or just guessing?

    Kale,

The 5" Filter will just basically be more surface area, so you "shouldn't" need to change as often. The efficiency of a Merv 11 5" versus a Merv 11 1" filter should be the same, in a perfect world.

Depending on the filter, you could lead to more pressure drop across the fan and decrease total airflow throughout the house. But you'd really have to look at the specs of both filters and compare the two.

I work commercial HVAC, so can't really say if that's an accepted standard. But if I was to guess that was all that was needed to meet the code and permit for residency.

  11. Home automation is a really big thing now.

I've been looking at trying to tie Garage, Lights, Door Locks all into a central system accessible by phone.

So far I got research done for Kwikset on Locks, Lutron for Lighting...All Z-Wave compatible so they can all tie in

  12. Drove a new A4 when my dad was car shopping. I know you don't care about power but the car sucked on the highway even with simple lane changes. For a turbo I was really disappointed.

Why don't you get like a 320i xdrive? Dave Walter BMW up here in Akron are leasing them for like $329 for 39 months at 0 down IIRC. Car has no balls but it is new, and fairly economical?
