i did a little research and you may have more of a problem than just a valve body it may be time to rebuild. if you do put a valve body in make sure you reset transmission shift adapts as it will cause other problems if you don't.

it may look burnt but does it smell burnt? the smell is the important thing.

buddy of mine has a trans am with a 502 in it and it puts 450 at the wheels but runs 10.80's with 3.73 and a 3900lbs car. kinda odd since on an engine dyno it puts out over 600, TCI told him with there stall converters you can't go by rwhp as it puts out fulse readings.

that and how often do you think you'll really use 6th gear? if you cruse with too low of RPM it starts to use more fuel then if you cruse at too high of RPM.

what would one be willing to pay for a set of fans off an 02 SS with 28k on them? i am still debating on weither or not to use them so i can't say for sure i will sell them yet.

you can also look at Hooker Super Comp mufflers, they may look like a regular muffler but i can see threw them and i have a off set inlet and a center out. the center in/out you can see stright threw them too and only dropped a 406ci small block 1 horse on the dyno vs. open headers, thats impressive in my book so i put them on my camaro.
