No brakes off the back straight? Don't be skeered...
Moto-Brian replied to Moto-Brian's topic in Track is Crack
Yeah, actually, a slipper would have been nice to have. Jam the gears down and let it slide, but the rear brake was doing that job... The corner worker at the top of 8 gave me a thumbs up... I waved back... -

The compound missing had the pistons go out almost fully. It would build slight pressure, but I had to pump constantly... Not easy to do while shit is coming at you at 170 mph... -
Ok, have a buddy who doesn't have ANY time to be selling this on the internet so, I am helping him out with this. This is a feeler due to he wants to see what he can get for the bike in question. 2007 1098S. -Black with red frame -2700 miles -Serviced 100% by local to him Ducati dealer (oil changes, warranty work, etc) Two options: Option #1: -Full Termi exhaust -Kit ECU -Ducati Factory Racing Slipper Clutch $19,900. Based on the fact that the local shop has the EXACT same set-up on their floor. Bike has more miles than this one and a few scratches on the plastic... OBO... Option #2: -Bone stock. $17,000. Anyone remotely intersted, let me know. Obviously serious inquiries only. If you work at a shop, he's wanting an 08 R6 or an 08 ZX6R. He is willing to trade so, you can work it out on your end if he can get a decent trade value. His shop was wanting to get him into an 848 and was looking at retail for the 848 and giving him $18k as it sat in Option #1... If you know anything about the ECU and Termi exhaust and price of the Racing Slipper, you know that $3K more is a deal.

Not really... Been in situations a whole lot more scary than no brakes. It left me unsettled and like I said, I thought "Oh shit" for a moment... I figured I had enough time, though/ -

I'd be more worried if it hit that shiny new fairing on his new 6R... -
Trust me, there's plenty of room at the end of the back straight at Mid-Ohio to get stopped or slowed enough to turn and make 7... Had an interesting issue show it's face yesterday at Mid-Ohio. Running down the back straight about 1/2 way through our session and popped up out of tuck to get slowed for 7 and the lever comes all the way back to the bar. NO pressure. Zero. Kinda did an "Oh shit" thing in the head, but knew to keep pumping the lever in hopes it would come back enough to work. No dealio. All the while, I was locking the rear. Good thing that even though I suck at MX, I wasn't horrified at being so sideways. Drew, I got you beat on being sideways into a turn... As I finally got slowed enough and was able to turn in at the very edge of the outside edge, I was looking at the brakes and thinking I'd see fluid or something busted a line, etc. I have a wrist band on the reservoir so, I couldn't see if there was fluid or not. Lever never pumped much at all so, I rear braked it back into the pits. Checked the system and no signs of any issues. Until I took the calipers off to look at the pads... The left side inner pad had lost it's brake compound. Yes, it came off the backing plate. I had passed Monte and while going into turn one where you don't use a lot of brake, he was hit with something in the chest. He thought it was a bird that swooped off the bridge and he hit it. It was the brake compound. I, of course had no clue until at the end of the back straight... I won't say what pads they were until I see what they do about it. I will say, they weren't Vesrahs. Never really trusted the brakes the rest of the day, but overall, was fine enough to have some fun. In 14 years of racing, NEVER had this happen. Know EBC had an issue YEARS ago, but never experienced it. Ever. Brakes are the one thing that if you cannot trust them, it makes it pretty tough to ride hard. The Vesrahs had me kicking myself as to why I even thought to switch... But, when we tell the riders in classrooms and such that the track is plenty wide enough to get slowed and not panic and cram the brakes, I am here to say we aren't full of shit...

Thnaks for bailing early homo... Had to lift that motor by myself and put it in Cripple's trailer. I think I blew testicle gravy all over the back of the trailer in doing so. He'll never know since you spilled all his radiator fluid on the floor...

Yeah, you're real fast. Especially at McDonald's with a tray!!!

Another note as to the 190/50 being the wrong choice. Guys with liter bikes that have 190/50s are running and changing to 190/55 for quicker turn in. DO NOT run a 190/50 unless you have a liter bike and want a little more side profile which translates into a better ride... Yes. 190/55s have been being used by racers and even street/track guys for a good number of years... It isn't anything new at all...

We tried that with a Mercury Station Wagon once... Had the old style wood paneling and everything. Put it in Neutral and placed a motorcycle battery on the accelerator pedal. After about 15 minutes, it threw a rod. Hillbillies one, wagon zero... We won that war, yo.

Call Brian Van at Sportbike Track Gear www.sportbiketrackgear.com Or, go to Iron Pony and see what they have in stock. Ask for Justin and have him help you along. He's got an R6 that he raced and he can get you some good info... -
Oh, and the straight swap isn't going to happen. You do need to adjust, but depending on the original tire you had, it may be a better result. Typical street profiles are fairly tall and do not turn in as quick. Therefore, they handle slower and feel bulky. Quick handling is the better of the two. Ask Flounder who switched from a 180 to a 190. He'll tell ya how fast it turns in. Quick turn in is a good thing. Bigger tire contact patch is a good thing, as well... It isn't for every bike, though. The newer R6s are higher power to the ground and can move a 190. Older R6s? Probably not a good idea.

190/55s are being used by about every R6 racer in the US. Other than Jensen. He still uses the 180... The 190 is a great tire IF you are fast enough for it and are leaned WAY over and need the extra grip. For the street? No need. Track use? By all means. Extra contact patch is a result. The bike will also flip side to side a little better as a result of the 55 profile, but overall, it is very close in feel. The difference comes when you are a slider or a straight up and down guy. Also on corner exit. That 190 will not spin as much as the 180 and therefore the extra grip will result in a better drive. That's the theory and what I believe in... I have my bike that was designed for a 180. I run 190s religously and feel it is the best choice. I do not like how stable it is under braking as I like it to move more, but the overall results vs. the 180 has me sticking with a 190. Again, top pros and top WERA National guys on R6s for the most part run 190s... Has nothing to do with rim size, either. Hence the result of the 190/55 being made.

Well, the King isn't a cruiser... It's more of a naked bike than anything. An ugly naked bike, but you get the idea. The M109 isn't a racer styled cruiser or a muscle cruiser. I know they kinda target that group as the VMax has been a goner for some time. VMax is still cruiser king as far as power and they need to make sure it stands on top. Nobody has a bike that fits in the cruiser class that really can stand toe to toe with the VMax...

That's cool if he was. It's just too easy for most to say they got bigger nuts than someone else does... When they are all literally so damn close, you are pretty much picking colors... As far as the new bikes, I get to be around a LOT of shops. I have a ton of friends and I am in the industry so I get to take spins on some cool bikes. I got to flog the new KTM Super Duke 990 at Mid-Ohio. What a fun bike for sure... It's just a little perk I guess I get...
-
He's only 9 right now, but I think they can race as early as that age, no? At places like CRP and not Mid-O, I am sure... I'd be interested in a set-up for my size, as well due to the fact we could both go out and do it...

Anyone ever have "tuners" try to race you on your bike?
Moto-Brian replied to magley64's topic in Daily Ride
I used to rev the motor and act like I was going to launch and as soon as the light turned green, I'd cruise away all the while the dousche bag would spin his wheels off and run her out. Sometimes, I'd do the ol' goober style and take off totally straight up and down, drag my feet the whole time, and skid to a stop at the next stop. That way, they'd feel even worse after getting taken by a goon rider... I'd look over at them the next stop and ask if they were serious and if they were, let's do it for pink slips this time. They'd usually squid away... I LOVE that story above though. Perfect timing. Drag racing in Ohio is worse than a DUI in terms of points too. Hopefully they got him for that.... -
Ok, a few things... 1) The XMax is stating fastest accelerating motorcycle out. Compared to the 14s and Busas, it probably will. It will most likely get off the line quicker due to mass and placement of that mass. The 14s and Busas are hard to launch - stock... Didn't say fastest 1/4 mile production bike. You guys are probably safe. 2) Who gives a shit? I've ridden stage 1- stage 3 VMaxs and well, let's just say they have power and are fun to ride. BUT... the world isn't straight and my mom drag races every time she gets a green light. That said, the pig, I mean VMax will not be sticking to ANY ZX10, 14, Busa or otherwise unlesss said sport bike rider is a complete tool... Flounder probably will have a tough time shaking one, but you get the idea... 3) Guy I am quoting above... One, the 2007 and 2008 GSXR1000s are the same. Saying he's at the start of the two year curve means jack shit. The 2007 GSXR1000 is worlds ahead of the 2006 and 2007 ZX10. Power means didley squat if it can't handle the power... Overall, the GSXR is better. Straight line? I have no idea. Ask Satan and others who have more drag racing experience. I refer to overall stats. As far as the 2008 ZX10 vs the GSXR1000? Well, it's hard to say. I think most will say that the GSXR will still win even though slightly. I rode a CBR1000 (08) a week ago and all I can say is that Suzuki better get it right next year... ZX10 is kinda cool, but I won't get a good feel for that bike until middle of June when I get some track time with it... Horsepower to the ground is easily fair to compare as the 2006/07 ZX10 is the same and the fact that Suzuki put out a new 1000 before Kaw makes no difference. His is a 2007 and yours is the same as a 2007 ZX10. They are fair to compare. Sure the 2008 ZX10 makes more power, but wait until next year when Suzuki invails their 09... Even if it still doesn't have more ponies, worsepower is simply a number. Point is it doesn't matter. None of it. Your bike makes 165 rear wheel. That's cool. I run down ZX10s and other liter bikes on my measly 140 to the ground 750. What's that mean? I'm God? Do I get a cool prize or anything. Seen Drew do it when his 600 only made 109 to the ground. He's EXTRA special then, I guess... Now, put Agnes out there on his liter bike and I get a little issue facing me. But, we're not talking about Jeff are we? Let's not even talk about someone like Jensen, etc...

How much? PM me details. I really want to get my son into this as he's interested. Of course it is karts or MX so... MX is currently winning, but I think he'd excel more in karting...

But, he can buy anywhere and take it to Matt for service or something... Just trying to save the guy money as with gas prices (I paid $4.19 in Southern Ohio yesterday) and all, 6 hour trips are pricey... Plus, I heard Columbus Ducati is sorta hurting and put their new building to the side for now...
-
Let's see, 6 hour round trip and cost of food and fuel, I don't think so. Considering Columbus Ducati is kinda a smaller shop and the fact that 848s are kinda tough to come by easily, I doubt the saving is worth the price of the expense to get to Indy and back vs. him going to Columbus and haggling a fair price for one...

If you're talking the next event on June 2nd... It isn't a Twilight... As far as Twilights go, yes, you will probably be able to pit on cold pit. Power is always available there, I think. It is up closer to the pit out area where we usually are...

Great tool! As far as the groups go, I think Novice still needs to be as easy of a transition as possible. Reason being that novices are typically first timers and if they need to do a TON of prep, the chances of them doing it and getting to the track becomes less. It's hard enough to convince guys to try the track let alone convincing them and then telling them they need to do all these extras...

Although STT allows these products like Evans, LP, etc., they are NOT approved for racing. Meaning, I feel they shouldn't be allowed on ANY track, but since this is a street based group we typically get, we allow it. I suggest Water Wetter or (my personal choice) Maxima's Kool-Aide. Both are legal everywhere and are MUCH more easily cleaned up than the above mentioned ones...
