  1. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-ticket-quotas-20110412,0,2790462.story

Much more to the story, but here's a summary to see if you want to read more..

LAPD officers who complained about ticket quotas are awarded $2 million

The veteran motorcycle officers alleged in a lawsuit that they were punished with bogus performance reviews, threats of reassignment and other forms of harassment after objecting to demands from commanding officers that they write a certain number of tickets each day.

    The best burn though...

The verdict dealt the city a particularly harsh blow since lawyers in the city attorney's office had rejected an offer from Smith to settle the case for $500,000, said Paul Weber, president of the union that represents rank-and-file officers.
  2. There are three twos in the English language.

How do you properly spell that sentence?

A man walks to the edge of a cliff near a large body of water and says "see/sea", which one does he mean?

  3. But with what you posted, "Implied and explicit multiplication is given the same priority."

Right -- but is that correct? :dunno:

    5. There is still some development in this area, as we frequently hear

from students and teachers confused by texts that either teach or

imply that implicit multiplication (2x) takes precedence over

explicit multiplication and division (2*x, 2/x) in expressions

such as a/2b, which they would take as a/(2b), contrary to the

generally accepted rules. The idea of adding new rules like this

implies that the conventions are not yet completely stable; the

situation is not all that different from the 1600s.

In summary, I would say that the rules actually fall into two

categories: the natural rules (such as precedence of exponential over

multiplicative over additive operations, and the meaning of

parentheses), and the artificial rules (left-to-right evaluation,

equal precedence for multiplication and division, and so on). The

former were present from the beginning of the notation, and probably

existed already, though in a somewhat different form, in the geometric

and verbal modes of expression that preceded algebraic symbolism. The

latter, not having any absolute reason for their acceptance, have had

to be gradually agreed upon through usage, and continue to evolve.

As a coworker pointed out since his whole job is to fend off ambiguous questions all day long -- "the real idiots are the ones that answer without asking for clarification or don't realize you're allowed to say 'I don't know' when presented with a vague problem like that."

  4. Since when do "experts in their field" matter?

We believe what policians tell us about jobs, economy, and the budget instead of the experts in the field that deal with those everyday so... why bother consulting the experts on this?

The answer to this problem is Glenn Beck.

  5. Lance,

You start from the left when there are operations of the same rank (division, multiplication). Things in parentheses are completed before they are combined.

So it would be 48/2 = 24 first. Then 24*(9+3) = 24*12 = 288 which in itself was one of my favorite numbers growing up. Since 144 is called one gross, then 288 is two gross which we would twist as too gross. So we would call someone that was irritating us a 288.

If you feed "=48/2*(9+3)" into Excel you get 288 also.

I hope the world is treating you well. All is fine with moi.

    Bwhahaha, nerd jokes.

Kinda like ya'll are a bunch of third derivatives of the position function -- s'''

  6. I *think* I need a battery for the VFR, I'm sure you've researched the shit out of such thing so would you suggest it?

    I have.

I only have one yr of experience using the MotoBatt product. You can't miss them with the BRIGHT YELLOW color.

I bought one for the Hayabusa last year because I didn't want to spend the money on a LiFePO4 or race battery, but the MotoBatt was the only brand I found that offered a TWO-year warranty vs. the one year for AGM batteries everywhere else. And, it was the same price as other AGM batteries, so I gave it a shot.

Anecdotally, I got a trickle charger as an Xmas gift, so I put my old SV battery on it, and it took a good 3-4 days before the trickle charger went "green" (charged). When I swapped and put it on the Motobatt, it went green after a half-hour. I continued doing the swap all winter with similar results. So, for using the Motobatt for half-a-season last year, it still holds a good charge.

The Hayabusa fired right up today when I reinstalled it... so far, it seems to be a good product.
