  1. I've already thanked them by paying their salary... It may not be an easy life, it may not be a fun life, but it is a life you accepted in return for the compensation you received. Volunteer firefighters and police officers, on the other hand receive no pay and simply do it for the satisfaction of helping others. Those are the people we should be thanking, they put their lives on the line as well.
  2. apparently you've decided it will play out with cursing... thanks, enjoy your day as well.
  3. I didn't say it was the same, what I'm saying is there are drawbacks and incentives to both... you've named most of them, and I think it's a fair generalization of the lives you've mentioned. FTR I'm not unionized, and I'm still paying on my student loans from nearly a decade ago... I'm not compaining about it, I'm happy with the life I've chosen. Your career choices are what they are, I'm just saying I don't understand this whole soldier worship culture we seem to have now. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if the time comes that I need to serve in the military to protect my country, I'll do so without hesitation. Until that time comes, my skills and abilities are better utilized elsewhere.
  4. Funny, I thought they went over all that when they tried to recruit me... http://www.marines.com/ Or did they lie to try to get me to sign? (not surprised if they did) sure, the ford plant doesn't give you a free education, free room and board and free meals every day (you have to spend part/most of your paycheck on those things)
  5. Occupational hazards... I coul've very easily joined any of the armed forces with the scores on my asvabs, I had gotten calls from every branch asking me to join up... I could've joined police academy. and had similar occupational hazards. I could've become an electrical line worker fixing power lines, and had a completely different set of occupational hazards. Just because your job is dangerous doesn't make it a "special" job... I chose a different route, and I'm pretty happy with it. If there comes a time when I need to serve in order to protect my country, I will happily do so, but in the mean time, my skills and abilities are better suited elsewhere. If you chose the military as your career, more power to you, but don't expect me to praise you for what is essentially a career decision.
  6. WINNA WINNA CHICKEN DINNA!!! rep

  8. ouch, if it happened near OSU you'd probably have better luck on this site (tons of members) cleveland is a little more spotty, but someone might come across it... what route did you take?
  9. 1. After riding a 150cc scooter today she says "this feels stupid, get my motorcycle out, I'd rather ride that" 2. She's significantly more comfortable hitting some curves at triple digits on the back of my sport bike, than she is going straight down the road on the back of her standard at the speed limit.
  10. this means you're doing it right... it also helps that you have a sport tourer...
  11. I agree with this part, we've already thanked them, with 140 billion dollars every year in income. it's a job...period. Now there is a small group of people that I hold in higher esteem, those are volunteer police and firefighters, they don't pull a paycheck, they just do it because they see it needs done... kudos.
  12. not round here, here the biggest threat to your safety is animals venturing into the roadway... but you are probably right where you live... wasn't my point... I don't care if people wear helmets... or seatbelts... or go boating/jet skiing/surfing without life preservers. Life is full of risks, you should be free to take the risks you want to take, so long as you understand them.
  13. Understood just as a point of reference, the thigh tap is way better than the way I used to signal for "hold on" (with the ex, I just grabbed her arms and wrapped them around my waist tight like a belt, lol)
  14. I agree with 1,2 and 4... I don't think 3 is worth mentioning, as long as she leans with him, she can look wherever her heart desires, and it shouldn't effect his lines. Bad, Just relax, and take boring roads until you get a feel for how she rides back there. There is nothing to it, make sure you have firm footing at stops, but while you're moving you might not notice her back there other than the loss of performance. If you pick it up near as fast as you picked up riding solo, you'll be dragging pegs on the dragon with her on the back, just like armith and emily in no time.
  15. nothing to it, she leans as you lean, you take it slower, and give yourself more room to brake/maneuver... it's just like packing your bike up with 100 pounds of luggage usually.. The only special thing I have with backpack as far as riding is if I'm about to pass someone or take off quickly, I tap her on the thigh twice... She knows that means "hang on tight" you can ome up with your own gestures for relaying information, or take the easy way and buy a set of helmet coms. if you want, I'll be happy to give your lady a ride on the XX if you think she'll be quirmy on you...but I think you'll be fine, you're a competent rider.
  16. You're at greater risk riding at night as well, do you ever venture out after the sun goes down? If you want to be safe, buy a volvo... Adults should be allowed to make their own (stupid) decisions.
  17. yep, got back last night went to work today, and req'd a vaycay day tomorrow so i can go to valleyview and pay my ticket
  18. going down there... might do a little ridin after...
  19. looks like a decepticon
  20. So how do you know they are drag racing and not just pinning the throttle?
  21. I think you can disable sigs somewhere in the user cp... they are mostly worthless anyway
  22. commuting on a bike is boring compared to going out riding.... but... commuting in a car is boring compared to commuting on a bike
