Brian Redman 2005 at Road America Crash

There was a huge crash at the BRIC this year at Road America, I was there and was horrified at the carnage. Here is a link to someone else’s pics. Keep in mind that the #25 Cobra is a 7 figure car. It was an ordinal Factory Team Car. If you read the text below the pics you will understand what happened. All the drivers were called into the VIP building immediately after the crash, they were most likely torn a new asshole, they called them in over the track PA system and everyone heard it.

For the Lazy:

"I was the operating steward for this race. The pace car did what was the right thing to do. We gave them instructions for each group. The two pole guys admitted to running up the hill at 5000 rpm in 3rd gear. The fifth place guy was racing well before the green flag and tryed to force his way between the wall and the car in front of him. He started scraping the wall and the guy behind him checked up and the car that hit him started to spin and then it was one after another into them. I am amazed that no one was killed. All the drivers except two had hans devices.

The green flag was in deed thrown. I red flagged the race with in 3 seconds of the green. Even with the red flag the drivers in the back just keep driving into the rear. The red was shown at corner 15(the walk over bridge). The drivers just did not pay attention. All drivers were forced to attend a meeting right after the incident. They were all yelled at. Interesting that in a few classes they are not allowed to pass until after turn 1 (Historic Gran Prix) and turn 3 for Can Am. One historic Gran Prix driver was banned from their series for life due to an incident in the kink.

I have to agree that the drivers in this group are some of the most agressive drivers I have ever seen. More distrubing to me were how many fist fights started after drivers started getting out of there cars. I feel that if they were able to get out they should have been happy they could even move after a incident like this.

I was very happy with how all of our crews came together to work in the heat. We had a steady flow of water for all the rescue crews, ambulance crews and wrecker crews while they were working in over 90 degree heat. What a great team.

What you have to understand about Road America is the front Straight is uphill, and you do not see the flag until you crest the hill. In this case some of the guys up front on the pole hit their brakes thinking they were not going to throw the green flag and the back of the pack was not tight yet so they were at race speed trying to catch up to the rest of the field. So since the start is kind of blind the rear cars were going way too fast at the start once they crested the hill it was too late none of them could stop in time. Boom crash, then the brawl.

Isnt it the job of the 2 cars in front to control the starting speed? If this is infact true, then what ever they do is fine. If they themselves jumped the gun and then checked up to correct thier own error, then i dont see a problem with that. The people behind them need to be sure that they leave themselves enough room for any sort of error on a start. If some people where laggin purposely to try to have better speed at the start and caused a rearend accident, then those are the individuals at fault. I agree that you shouldnt actully hit the brakes if your leading the pack, but i dont think checking up with engine braking is bad. Either way, it sounded like people jumped the gun and tryed to fit a 60" wide car into a 58" gap and all hell broke loose. I dont think any of those individuals should be allowed to race if they cant keep from piling up before the green. Road racing is about clean lines, not NASCAR hillbilly tagging. Aparently someone who was out there forgot that....

Sux all those Corvettes got masshed :(
