What happes when an AC Compressor goes out?

My sister has a 97 Contour and the AC compressor is making some noise. I'm wondering what will happen if it goes out? I've been told that it may freeze up which would snap the belt and obviously cause some problems..

 

I've never had one go out on me and am wondering if anyone has any info??..

First off check to see that its not the a/c clutch or clutch cover. Those are a lot cheaper than a comrpessor.

Remember my black SHO? I ignored the noise for a while and one night @ about 7000 rpm the clutch detonated and almost came thru the hood. Not fun. Easy to rebuild though.

Is it a frequent clicking noise? If so, this is often an indication of low refrigerant; the system kicks on and off.

I had a bearing go out on one. Makes a loud screaching noise. Easy fix, the bearing was like $19.00

on delco/haris ones (gm) if the pump frezzes, it will usually squal the belt, or the clutch will slip.

if it is making a constant ratiling, it is probably a conecting rod in the compressor, and will need to be replaced

Our CRV was making some funny noises in the interior the other day, kinda like a slow gas leak noise. Turns out the evap canister was frozen because the AC compressor was running forever all day because of a relay being stuck open.

The noise is kind of a squeaking noise. Kind of like a loud power steering but a little higher pitched, and a little more violent/contact sounding.. I did try to fill it up and used the oil in it and it didn't do a thing.

 

I really don't have time to work on it before she leaves. She's heading out of town with it shortly and I don't want her getting stranded somewhere..
