My student loan check was accidentally mailed to my old address and they have it in their possession. They promised to answer the door when i came over and wouldnt. So i've told them to leave it in the mailbox and i will pick it up and they havent done that. How should i go about getting this check. i'm broke and have to have it and it's a substantial amount. Just threatening them should get you your way. Say they have threatened you harm in the past and you are scared to go alone and do not want to take large friends to fight. They should be able to go on location and get it or escort you. I would not contact these men and treaten bringing the police, just call CPD and have them go with you. Explain the situation to the police, explain that you have been threatened with violence by these people, and they will escort you. I don't know that they will have the power to force them to hand over the check, but if any of them make threats or the like the police are there to deal with that immediatly. So if these shits are real stupid, you might get to see them beat down by CPD, and hauled in. If they have any sence, they will just coperate though. Thing to do is do it on a Friday night when you know they have been drinking. Two reasons, one is that booze makes people do stupid shit that will get them arrested, second is that being underage and drunk, if they are underage, or anyone there is, will get them hauled off to jail. However, if they opened the mail with the intent of defrauding the contents or cashing the check, then that's a different story. (Though I'm not sure they've done either of those things.) I wouldn't be surprised if CPD aren't terribly receptive, especially if you call them and ask for an escort. I don't know the law, so I'm not sure if, legally, they are obligated to provide an escort. Then again, in my experience, it seems like CPD, in good faith, would provide an escort, particularly given the parameters (e.g., a woman with men as ex-roommates, her trepidation about returning, etc.). Taking over some bruisers to strong-arm the check out of them may backfire. All the roommates would need to do is look out on the porch, see your meaty friends, and then call the police to frantically report that you're bringing by goons to work them over. They may just very well convince the police that they are the "real" victims in the situation, leading the police to view you as the aggressor and the party at fault. Maybe you could have a convincing friend call, act as though they are an attorney, indicate that they are representing you and that, in order for them to avoid legal prosecution, they must deliver your check to a specified address within two business days. After all, you can always use the force (i.e., the strongarm tactics) at a later date if other options don't work. Also, I agree about calling the place where the check was issued and letting them know the situation. It may be easiest just to have another check issued. Also, they'll be able to tell if the check has been cashed (and thus tip you off with respect to any fraud/theft on their part). Your school's financial aid office will have on file the contact info of the bank issuing the check. I suppose it has something to do with having to survive in a big world that makes em that much tougher. I see that your profile says you live on the east side and in Columbus that means either 9th or 14th precinct, luckily for you two of the most busy in all of Columbus. Which means CPD will either tell you they are too busy or not show up at all. If you are going to file a report, do not file it with a police department, as they are just going to forward it to the post office anyway. The post office handles these things daily. It does not have their name on it. The mail does not belong to them, they will not give it back to her, they have stolen her mail. My logic is not warped, it is correct. Think about it for a minute. If you live with your parents, and own your own car, you will have your name on the registration. The car is registered to you, and you alone. Just because the car is registered to the same address as your parents doesn't mean the car belongs to them too. If they wouldn't let you take your car, you could report it stolen and they would be arrested. I know it is a weird example, but it is the only way to describe it.
