The Project Begins: My NA 16v Build-up

Well, I'm not totally sure where to start with this one but I enjoy reading and keeping up about everyone else's projects and I figured I might as well let people in on my project as well. A lot of you may recognize my car and just for a little backround, I bought my car almost 3 years ago for 1800 dollars and in much worse condition than it is in now. With thousands of dollars invested into my car it has seen many many hours of wrenching and dedication. But to give everyone a little history on the car I had problems with my thermostat almost a year ago from now which unfortunately blew the headgasket between the 3rd and 4th cylinder and caused the car to overheat. Along with this problem I suspect that it might have warped the head slightly but I took the chance when replacing the OEM headgasket the first time and decided not to get it milled and prepped. Well, the headgasket lasted almost a year and I found the car having similar symptoms I had the year before, and it's no suprise to me that i'm going to have to do it all over. In light of the situation I decided i'm going to just pull the engine, give it a nice rebuild and build the motor up how i've always imagined. With the money I've put away in my savings for the past couple of years I went ahead and purchased quite a long list of parts which include:

TODA Camshafts

304 intake / 8.5 lift

288 exhaust / 8.5 lift

TODA Timing Belt

TODA Valve Springs

TRD 82mm .5 Head Gasket

11.5:1 82mm Pistons

Weber 45mm DCOE Carbs

Largeport Carb Adaptor

MSD 6AL

ARP Everything

I'm not sure exactly what kind of numbers I will be looking at with this setup but I'm looking forward to some pretty good results. The block itself will be completely acid dipped, shotpeened, blueprinted, 5 angle valve job, honed etc etc, thanks to a good buddy of mine, derrick, who said he'd lend me a hand with the engine work. The majority of the parts are already on order and in transit to my home but I still have to order some small odds and ends. With the reassurance that my most important parts were on their way I decided I would go ahead and get a start on tearing stuff out of my engine bay.

First bit of progress

http://www.portal.conceptual-x.com/andy/buildup/PC060008.JPG

drained the engine and radiator, removed the radiator, electricfan, intake, battery, and other odds and ends. I realize it's a small step in progress but getting started is always the hard part

I plan to keep this updated as much as possible.. I want to get the car done as soon as I possibly can, seeing how this season has just begun and I certainly don't want to sit out.

So if my research is correct...

You have 115hp stock ??

What are you shooting for 140sh?

Yeah, about 115 to the flywheel.. I dyno'd at 100rwhp and 99ftlbs tq a year or two ago. With the parts i'm going with it will put me pretty close to 200'ish to the flywheel. I'm going with pretty similar specs to the Formula Atlantic series 4AG motors and they put out roughly 250hp.

Thats a crazy amount of money for that kind of power but to each their own.

Good luck with your project.

Yeah, it's not cheap.. and I could've turbo'd my car for around 600 dollars easily but I have no desire to. The sound of the open carbs and NA power is rediculous.. not to mention the amazing throttle response. I wanted to keep the motor true to it's ERA and this is the only way to go :)

Just remember to take lots of pictures to help you hook everything back up easily.

There won't be much left to hook back up when the engines done.. the whole harness will be eliminated along with all the emissions garbage.

That thing should sound sweet revving out to 10k rpms!!

haha, you know it.. that's what i'm going for :)

Do they make individual throttle bodies for these cars? or are they a race-only product?

no they make them but that will require the use of a ECU, andy will be running from a MSD unit

i will probably be running some ITB's soon on my miata

Props for originality. Fact is; it's your money. We get to benifit because we will get to see something rarely built. Good luck with it and take your time. I just finished my build and there is no feeling like it starting on the first try.

Today I basically took everything else out of the engine bay; The intake mani, exhaust mani, the engine harness, any other lines and wires that I would need out of the way or need removed. I decided I'm going to refurbish my oil cooler lines and have the unit itself repainted so it looks new again. Where it sits today it's basically ready to come out.. I just have to take the bolts out of the transmission belhousing and take the engine off the mounts and pull her out but I really need to get my engine hoist and engine stand back before I can pull it out. When the engine's out and getting worked on at the machine shop I plan to completely strip anything unnecessary in my engine bay after the build, and giving the bay a good detail. Also I will be repainting a lot of the parts and accessories that I will be re-using. I am very meticulous about detail, and if anything's going to get done, it's getting done the right way. As you can see the garage where my car is, is a mess but that's expected. I expect my parts to be here in the next couple of days, so I will keep everyone updated on that too.

Sound like a great project.I've mentioned it before that I had an FX16 GTS 5F and loved that car.The 4AGE is an awesome motor with tons of potential.Spend what you want and build what you want cause you will be the one driving it.I have people tell me they hate Mustangs and I just say well it's a good thing I didn't buy it for you.

how are the rear ends in those things? can they hold a good amount of power?

It'll be alright. He might need a new ring/pinion later in it's life as that is a common problem amongst Corolla's. We just put that rear end in that car, rebuilt the LSD as well.

I certainly agree with that statement being said about the 4AG motor. In 86' this motor was quite a feat for toyota although the B series and etc motors that honda has put out makes the 4AG obsolete because of the outdated head design.

good luck.

The rear end on these are very similar to a Ford 9" except just a bit smaller. I know they don't hold a great amount of power but I believe I should be fine. I recently rebuilt the LSD and rear-end myself so I know it's in a good condition, but I might take the step to get my R&P Cryo'd just for reassurance. To be honest, I'm a bit worried about my transmission, the T50 stock in these corolla's are known to be a bit weak so hopefully it will stand up to the stress.

It's been a couple days since I took new pictures but that's really because not a WHOLE bunch of progress has been made. I had a delay of a few days because I didn't have access to an engine hoist. The same night I got my hoist I pulled the engine and tranny and got the two detached from eachother. Believe it or not this is my first time pulling any engine from any car so there's always a first for everything :). The engine bay is filthy and will be meticulously cleaned out by yours truely. Also in the meantime of waiting for a hoist I decided to go on a search for some SS braided lines for my oil cooler, and repainted the cooler itself so it looks almost like new again. I plan on eliminated the heater core and all the heater lines and whatever else I can get rid of in the engine bay. As far as my parts go, I've recieved all of my ARP studs and my TRD .5 mm headgasket.. but everything else should be here VERY soon. As soon as it all comes in expect plenty of pictures. With my busy schedule I may not have time to take the block and head to get the work done this weekend(the 21st) but I may have to drive to cincinnatti sometime next week and get it done. Basically I just have to wait for my parts to get here and the work will come together VERY quickly. Keep checkin' back!

He's not even joking about this or spouting b/s just becuase he owns the car and is doign this. Anyone's who's ever watched Toyota Atlantics run knows how they sound. Almost every other small formula class based off of a production engine is based off of some current 4 cylinder n/a engine, and every one of them sounds like shit except for the Toyota Atlantic cars. It sounds like a little F1 engine.

Cool project. I know someone who's on here but doesn't post anymore that will be very interested in this project. Good luck and keep us updated. That much power in that chassis should be plenty for what you are trying to do with it.
