To be honest, I'm a bit worried about my transmission, the T50 stock in these corolla's are known to be a bit weak so hopefully it will stand up to the stress.

 

 

If you need a w58 let me know. I have a backup.

I've heard of using that tranny in that chassis before but don't know anything about it. What's the skinny. Does it fit well? Bolt right up or need custom mounts? Connect straight to the stock driveline or need a custom drive shaft? Same bolt pattern on the bellhousing or need a custom one? Are the actuation systems for the clutch the same? Do you need to make any custom linkage for the shifter or does that just fit?

 

Just general stuff like that.

You need an automatic SR5 tranny mount, a 4AGZE flywheel and clutch, the slip yoke from a W58 car/truck with a custom shaft, there is a company that makes a bellhousing for the swap can't think of the name, then you just need a slave/clutch fork/bearing out of a Wbox car with the fork coming out on the intake side. There are a few other things, but that's the jist of it.

FINALLY got the pistons I was waiting on for a bit.. This is basically everything that's going into my motor aside from the Weber Carbs and the MSD 6AL unit. Tomorrow I will be making my trip to Cincy to get all the work done and I shall return with a beast in the making :). Other than recieving the parts not much progress has been made, just small little things I've done in the bay that I can get pictures of later. I will have new pictures of the block and head soon!

Well, I've made some progress and unfortunately I've taken a step back as well.. I just found out the pistons I recieved were for a Redtop 4ag which have a 20mm wrist pin and I need pistons with an 18mm wrist pin for a bluetop. Other than that slight fallback I HAVE made progress. I loaded up the engine and all my parts into the trunk of my accord and made my way to Cincy where Derrick(crazy guy in the pictures) and I tore the engine apart to get it prepped for the machine shop. While seperating the head from the block and tearing everything else apart I was able to get many answers as to why my engine had taken a shit on me. Some of you might find humor in all of this but get this; Piston rings had seen their days, Rod bearings were shot, tremendous amounts of carbon buildup on the piston domes, slightly leaking headgasket and to top it all off.. sludge in my oil pan. ALSO, after removing the 3rd cylinder piston we found a retaining clip floating around in the block underneath the piston. Looking at it all you would think i've never taken 15 minutes to service the engine but since i've had the car in my posession I've done nothing but up-keep. It leads me to believe the donor car was driven in a rally or even on a beach; the car was originally from florida so it's possible. I was going to get pictures of all the stuff we found wrong but my camera unfortunately died before I was able to... but believe me, it was a sight to see. Also Derrick and I took the liberty to remove any excess slag and imperfections from the intake runners before we sent the head off to the shop to be cleaned and worked on. Upon returning back to columbus I took the Simple Green and Fantastic spray straight to my engine bay and got it looking pretty damn clean. Also while it was all drying up I decided to install my quick release hub extention as well. I'm told the head and block will be ready soon but the assembly and everything else associated will be put on hold until I get the right pistons which I hope I can get taken care of ASAP. Anyways, this is all that's happened the past two days so keep checking!

UPDATE #5 10.5.06

Two months down the line and you're probably curious what I've been up to right? I wasn't really going to do an update to fill anyone in yet until I had pictures of what's going on but I think it's simply just been too long to keep putting this off any more. Also it was brought up to my attention that people were getting antsy as to what's been acomplished over this time. To be honest, not a whole bunch.. but I have become quite knowledgable about much more than I was before. From reading the previous update it was stated that I had problems with having the wrong wrist pin size on my pistons.. well my choices were to have custom pistons made and wait 5-6 weeks just to get them back, or get custom Pauter rods made for me and recieve them within the same week. Needless to say I went with the custom rods knowing that this was probably the best choice since I would have the reasurrance my once weakest link is now not of concern at all. It wasn't the cheapest route but I'm glad I made that decision. SO, after receiving all the correct parts so the machine shop could start their work I ran into another problem shortly thereafter. I was told my stock shims wouldn't work with my 304 cams with 8.5mm of lift. This came as a surprise to me because I figured I could've barely gotten away with the stock shims since the cams weren't over 9mm but I guess not, so RIGHT at this moment I'm STILL waiting to be told what clearances I'll need to order for my motor. Yet again, another area I was hoping I wouldn't really have to deal with but I have no problem forking out the extra money for good shims. Aside from these long pauses in my machine work I have collected other various parts such as my Weber 45's, Carb manifold and Linkages, FPR, Headers, MSD 6al and pill kit and my under-drive pulley kit will be on it's way with my 1sz-fe shims. My car has just been sitting in the garage same as it was before just waiting on the motor to be done, that's really all I can do right now is wait. I promise everyone once it all comes together I will have a ton of pictures, but this is just a little feed back on what's going on.

 

UPDATE #6 10.16.06

This is that BIG update everyone's been waiting on. I apologize ahead of time for the crappy pictures of the assembly, but I forgot my camera. The past weekend has been a really long weekend for me, as well as the past two nights after work. I got word friday that the motor was ready to be picked up so I headed to Cincinnatti Friday night and Derrick and I picked up the motor at 8 o'clock sharp and begun the assembly. With all the parts before us we got started right away. We got all the pistons pressed in, and the rods all put together, got it rotating and put the pickup, windage tray and oil pan on and turned the crank to find that there was a clearance issue with my rods and my windage tray. Turns out the rod bolts were nicking the windage tray so we made some small little modifications and again put it all together. We then got the headgasket prepped with copper spray, and put the head on. As you can see we weren't messing around with the copper spray.. this engine will sh*t pennies when I start it up lol :). Head went on without problems and I then packed up the rest of my old and new parts and headed home. On the side note, I did get the measurements for my shims and I ordered them Friday night. I recieved them today(monday) but I missed the shipment and I have to wait till tomorrow. Anyways, I'm not able to put the cams in all the way because I have to replace the old shims with my shimless, but I was able to plug up the spark plug holes and get some etc work done. I wasted no time gettin the engine put back in my car and putting the alternator and etc back on my motor. I've been working on this the past two days and even today after work. I re-attached the waterlines, plugged up my injector holes, test fitted my carb manifold, fitted the linkages on the carbs, mounted my MSD box and FPR. Unfortunately I can't put the transmission on yet because the rear main bearing was dipped with the block and it's frozen but I've got a new one coming in tomorrow as well as my shims so it should be pretty **** close to running. On a lighter note, I decided to add a little bit of fun into the project.. I swung by Staples and got myself an easy button. If you didn't know already it's basically a button you push that says, "That was easy.." Well, my idea is to wire it up to my ignition as a push button start so when the motor cranks and starts it will say, "That was easy.." All that's left right now is to get the bearing changed, put my shims in, seat the cams and put in all the cam cover seals, wire up my MSD and the small little things and hopefully see if I can get her started. I'm going to get video footage of getting it started so everyone can enjoy the project coming to life.. keep checking back I'm going to be making some progress regularly now that I have my baby back.

Are you not going to run an air cleaner?

 

I might wrap a thin material like pantyhose over the trumpets but other than that.. nope.

 

thing about that though is I really just have to change the oil a lot more often and be careful in the conditions I drive it in.

I've seen little air filters that are designed for something like that. Better than pantyhose, I'm sure.
