Flying in Alaska is the same as swimming in Hawaii to the locals. Lots of those bush pilots have been flying since they were kids. A certificate just means you paid someone for getting you started, it doesn't mean you have skill. Some college grads are dumber than a box of rocks, but they have a degree...
