Detonation Sucks

Went to 42 last night.

First pass blew the tires off, Second pass I pulled the nitrous way back, still spun a little but cut a 1.42 60'

The 1/8 was ok down about 1 mph then it layed down hard on the big end, only trapped 135. It didnt show lean on the logs. Next pass it goes lean and detonates HARD. It appears the fuel pump layed down on me, I changed the pump but I cant try it until I get some more plugs they will be here tomorow. I cant believe that there are no signs that I pushed any water. How the heads didnt lift I will never now. Cometics FTW. I wont know for sure until I lean on it again but every other time I lifted a head I new right away. I never heard it detonate like that before. Funny part is it idled fine with the plugs toasted. Sorry the pics a little blurry.

I've been running dual Walbros (340m and 342s) that are about a year or so old without issues.

Kenny, what's the time frame for "as of late"?

Most of it started around May, but I have no idea on manufactured date for the pumps. Most of the people that have been having issues have had them die in a matter of months, or less. I've ran Walbros in everything I've ever had and never had a problem, so who knows. I haven't fully read the thread as I don't really want to know if the pump I just installed is going to give me nightmares or not.

Most of the pumps in question are 340s.

Edit: Also, a few people seem to think the problem is a grounding issue. Racetronix and other vendors recommend a ground strap from the tank to the frame. I haven't seen anything whether or not the people having failures have done this or not. Just food for thought.

To me it seems to be a voltage/grounding problem. As long as you've got a better ground than stock I wouldn't worry about it (ie: more than the wiring that goes into the tank, an external ground from the tank to the frame).

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself until mine fails. :D

my new walbro pump sucks, so I removed it and I bought a new complete Delphi sending unit and everything is working fine

He speaks truth. I know a few people now who have installed a walbro and having fuel issues. They then went out and bought a stock fuel pump and issues resolved.

Lightning guys have a huge issue with eating plugs like that but not lifting a head and it idles fine after it happens. Last time i was at D42 same thing happened to me and i drove the truck home no problem.

Be aware that lately, there have been a LOT of shops and eBayers selling crap-ass Chinese Walbro knock-offs. They are hard to tell from the real thing, the most reliable way to tell is that the knock-offs GENERALLY have a dull finish to the metal body of the pump. The real deals are nice and shiny stainless.

Did the same thing here, racing an Audi RS4 at 130 mph...

Saw 16* of knock on my scanner, then the check engine light came on. Multiple cylinder misfire. LOL, luckily there was no damage to the heads, pistons or valves. I hope the same goes for you!
