1963 amc rambler 660 classic

just some info about the car if anybody didn't see my thread in the passing lane.

http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68602

This car was bought in 1963 by the original owner to race specifically at the drag strip in the E-stock class. It has been a dragstrip car its whole life other then the occasional cruising around. I'm going to try and get it back in shape like how it was in its glory days. the car runs very well it will just need

Exterior

body work (rust removal, metal patchwork, some dents, paint job)

Interior

the seats need redone and new carpet in. the dash and everything else looks and works great!

Under the hood

sand and repaint all the engine parts

possibly rebuild engine (port/polish) upgrade cam, intake.carb

First off i'll be updating this thread daily/weekly to show the progress i've been making.

for comparison shots, here are some picture of it before i touched it.

Progress:

day 1-3

I ordered some jewelers rouge to shine up the stainless steel grill along w/ the hoods over the headlights. So i took the grill and the hoods off so that i'll be able to work on them immediately when the polish comes in.

I also started on cleaning up the engine bay by first getting the easiest stuff done first. I removed the Air intake canister from top of the carb and also removed the valve covers along with some other things and began so sand down and paint. I chose semi-gloss black b/c it looks very good under the hood and i didn't want bright colors. I'm also going to be painting the engine cast iron grey/silver.

White, you will get alot of people telling you to stuff a BBC, oe even a SMC in it..

the engien your dealing with is the first gen. AMC engine, not a whole lot of go fast goodies for those engines out there, But i do have a buddy up in Mi. that has been able to get some goodies..

I thought i read somewhere this one at least has the 4 BBL carb and intake. That is a good thing!

also if you take off the rocker shafts be careful about where the bolts came from, as i THINK 2 of them are hollow to allow oil to lube the rockers and valve springs. if you dont have any oil coming up , might pull 1 bolt at a time, to see if the hollow portion may have gotten sludged up. That seems to be a problem area with that engien design..

Good luck, and like i said, if i can lend a hand or help out in anyway, give me a shout.

Mike

Thanks for all the insight on the car Mike. Luckily, my friend I purchased the car off of has been around AMC's for a long time and he knows everything about this vehicle and has been helping me out along the way. You probably know him since he's originally from akron and he's friends w/ the AMC boys. His name is John, he's in his 40's, has a 72 green javelin he races and he's an electrician. He's been helping me with this every step of the way. We got all the stipping off the car along w/ the headlights and taillights. i'm going to start body work on it this weekend fixing dents, rust, sanding down, etc.. I'll post some more pics up of the car in its current stripped state to show ya where were at progress wise.
