I have been looking for one with a permanent filter (cleanable) non -ionizing With the internet being a great fountain of information and reviews it seems like I get going on a particular model and then find a slew of bad reviews a long with good ones. Has anyone on here had to get one of these? What model do you have? was it worth it? Did you notice any difference in your allergies? We got these units nearly 5 years ago when we got our dogs which I'm alergic to. To be honest, I do actually believe that they helped with my allergies and asthma at first, however if you're not really attentive to changing the filters over time they just become a device to push dust around rather than prevent it. Our units have pre-filters then the HEPA filter as well. The pre-filters need changed every month or two, the HEPA unit itself only about once a year. Worth it as long as you keep after them, when you get lazy with filter replacement you might as well turn them off and put them away. I thought for sure that having a running nose, not sleeping well and sneezing all the time was just a part of my life, but all of that stopped when I got that air purifier. When I started dating my girlfriend, I couldn't be at her place for more than about an hour before I was coughing and having trouble catching my breath (she has a dog). We got a Holmes air purifier for her bedroom. Took it home, turned it on and went out to dinner. By the time we got back, I had no problem breathing there at all. Now that I live there, we have both of them going full time. Both of those are ones that have filters that you have to replace, so I can't speak to the cleanable ones, but you can find filters of a much lower price on Amazon. I also started the shots when we got our dog, thought that after 5 years I had done enough so stopped getting them back in october. I guess I really took for granted how much they were helping me out, I had to start them back up this month because I was constantly had a runny nose, my asthma was really acting up, etc all as a result of stopping the shots. Even though I have pretty severe allergies I just deal with them. But the GF is moving-in in August and she has a Cat (which he is pretty cool) but I am deathly allergic to it. Ironically I had the same results thus why I think 99% of the allergy visit bullshit is exactly just that. Those here that know the story of my sinus surgery and suffering from the days of college hear this, but in the beginning, I had the same outcome as you. Everything including shellfish and chocolate was said to be hitting me and causing my issues. In the end it was all bullshit and it was really just my sinuses needed fixed surgically. Since 2004 I can breath with zero issues, have zero runny noses and when I get a cold, fuck it, doesn't bother me. Not saying that's your solution or issue, but I would also see an ENT Specialist before you go the allergy shot route. Our vet said the same thing about our dog and his "allergies" that were said to be pollen, grass, etc....causing him to lose hair, etc....Wasn't anything medically it was 100% you need to do these shots, etc.... I said fuck that, researched it a bit on my own and found out it was his food. Even the stuff from the vet wasn't good. Once I switched it....BAM! all was fixed. In your case, you might want to start by checking your diet and experimenting there a bit. i don't think a shot is the answer if it is, I do think it could just be a minor diet change that even the tests aren't picking up. I would start researching that. My sister in law was allergic to dogs for the longest time, so she thought, but once she adjusted her diet, her system has been able to tolerate dogs and in fact they have two with no issues. Go buy local, raw, honey. It contains pollen and your body will train itself to stop reacting. I became a beekeeper so I would have access to this stuff and my children don't suffer from seasonal allergies anymore. For me it was more my asthma acting up that was pissing me off not really the sneezing, snot running down my throat or any of that. To give you an idea of my level of alergy I can be around my brother's dog for about an hour before I basically stop breathing without asthma medication. Even quicker for cats. To this day I'm not sure I could live with one in my house. The dogs we got are hypo-allergenic and do not have an undercoat which helps me quite a bit. They don't have a way to escape unless the windows and doors are left open. The air outside your home is actually cleaner than the air inside your home. This, we didn't actually discover the problems with my girlfriends dog until Fall when she had to start closing the windows. Granted I haven't slept in my room in a week given that I had black mold develop in my closet (apparently baby bottles can grow mold during long term storage even after being washed and sanitized, lesson learned.) at any rate, i took everything out, new bed, new bedding, cleaned everything that could be cleaned and threw out anything that couldn't (any linens, clothes, etc. Washed down the walls with palmolive and water, vacuumed the shit out of the carpet. At any rate I'm not entirely sure whats causing my dry air issue, I'm thinking it may be the purifier. I'm buying a mold test kit today so we shall see within 48 hours if I got it all. Its a honeywell unit, from what i heard they Are supposed to be pretty good for asthma sufferers. I'll check it out though to be sure.
