got in another 40 today. i wont be doing this ride again, as the ride leader was an idiot, to say the least. he almost took me out when he went to look over his left shoulder for the group (i was right behind him down on my aero bars doing ~20-21) and pulled his bike left and rubbed up on my front tire. luckily, i stayed up, but stayed away from him the rest of the ride. he made like 5-6 random stops, decided the best time to check if the other 4 of us had ridden in group rides was at a stop sign 3 miles into the ride, its like "hey, maybe you should've had this chat in the parking lot"...the flow of the ride sucked, he was a dick...i'll find a different sunday morning ride. never again that one...made sense at the end why it was such a small group. 5 on the faster paced ride, 3 or 4 on the slower one

Rode 21 broken miles today...parked downtown, rode to grandview, watched some races, rode a few more miles, watched more races (the cat 1/2 guys are fucking beasts!), rode some more then headed home. passed 1800 on the year today!

So out in CO this past week and did some DH in Vail on Friday afternoon and Sat. AM. Rented a really nice Kona demo on Friday and ran until the gondola stopped at 6. Great bike, loved it.

So Sat we were going to knock out a few runs in the AM with a new, cheaper rental bike, take some less agressive routes( no one wants to spend 20hours in a car with busted X), eat lunch and start the drive back to columbus.

The first run on saturday turned out to be our only one. Managed to snap the derailer hanger WHILE GOING DOWN AN ACCESS ROAD AT 30 mph! I mean shit normally just doesn't just break out of no where, but we were only 1/3 down the mountain trying to connect one black diamond with another.

hanger snapped, send the derailer into my rear wheel breaking 3 spokes and absolutely shredding the derailed. I held it together and came out with some pedal rash on the back of my left leg.

It let go where the guy in the distance is at and i came to rest where the pic is being taken from.

The shop i rented it from didnt offer insurance so i ate the bullshit bill. Its just money but even worse i was out 1/2 a day of great DH sine they had already rented the rest of the bikes out by the time i walked my happy ass down 2/3rds vail mountain!

another 4 weeks? LOL

I went into beast mode today. did a 61 mile ride out around granville, utica, st. louisville...4,000' of climbing. legs, on fire. whole body tired. its crazy there was 1200+ more feet of climbing than we did in the same distance in lancaster 2 weeks ago. it wasn't fast (it was a no-drop ride for people from my old job)

today -

So Michelin pro3 tires...dont buy them. ever. even if there's a fire. And if someone tires to give them to you for free punch them square in the mouth and walk the swiftly in the other direction.

i had 15 flats in 150 miles on them. fucking nuts. So last week i fired off an email to Michelin and pretty much told them that their tires are easier to penetrate than mjsplats' girlfriends. No response.

never again will i buy Michelins bike tires and i'm encouraging anyone i know to do the same. i know the pro4s are out now but fuck those guys.

Sounds like gatorskin by Continental are extreamly durable with a pretty low resistance.

we'll see.

I've heard that gatorskin by Continental (who had a decent track record with me before) are extreamly durable with a pretty low resistance.

Conti = not so good, they just don't seem to last that long.

Vredestein TriComp- They seem to last a good bit (1000-1400miles).

Or you could also look at the Vredestein duocomp.

I assume you're talking about the Michelins?

yea. one time i ran out of patches and innertubes. 4 flats total, hit both the front an rear tires. Left me stranded 10 miles out at about 7pm. How happy was thet wife when i called to not only to tell her i needed picked up but that we'd have to cancel our dinner plans with friends d/t my quad-flat ride.

you're probably thinking of the Ultrasports. like $20/tire? i had them, they're OK, but i wont run them again. the gatorskins are a heavier tire...thats the tradeoff for the puncture protection. looking online, about 280g for wire bead, 230g/folding tire.

i just got to about 2k miles on the ultrasports i bought this year, and got a bunch of flats last few weeks (couple while riding, 3 before i started a ride one day...fucking horse shit)

i was about to get the Continental Grand prix 4000s, which is what most of the guys i ride with run, but they're like $55/each. you can get a twinpack on ribble or probikekit from europe for like $87 shipped, which is a little better.

I was actually driving to bicycle one in pickerington to pick them up when my buddy called and said he had some Vittoria Rubino Pro IIIs, still new in the boxes, got em for $40 for the pair, what he got them on sale for. riding them for a couple weeks now, about 200 miles, they're decent. i'd run them again, unless i find a killer deal on the GP4000s online this winter. something under $80/pair i'll snag em. the rubinos you should be able to find for $30/each or so

is this a joke? 1000-1400 miles is "a good bit"?

lots of people are getting 4-5k miles on the GP4000s

It think I was 10 the first time I put 1000 miles on a bike in a summer... maybe 11, not kidding.

People spend a shit-ton of money one this stuff, and I swear to Ronnie James Dio; I don't see why unless they're competitive at a top-10-in-your-class level. Overweight sloths on $3000 bikes are a common sight around here.... sorry dude, that extra 130% you spent on all that competitive advantage ain't going to make you any faster.

you know, if i didnt have adult things to do during the summer, like, oh, i dont know, work, tending to a house, etc, i could do 1k miles in 2-3 weeks. summer vacation is what...3 months? 11 miles/day? thats easy

as for your comment about the bikes you see, would you rather drive a shitty kia rio with base everything, or something a bit nicer with better things in it...lets say a maxima or a legacy. you'd be surprised the difference some things can make. i physically noticed a difference in how i rode with some upgraded wheels (mavic ksyrium elite/SLs). when i rode a full carbon Domane at the trek demo day my buddies wife was running, the responsiveness of the steering was night and day to my bike. the di2 electric shifting is so precise and fast its not funny. shit like that costs money. is everyone going to race? no. but why not get something better than the bottom line product? 3k will get you a decent entry level carbon bike. i could see your point if i saw mass amounts of people out on team level bikes, which i dont.

As a kid, you want the cooler bike to impress kids.

As an adult for fun and exercise, you should probably know better.

dont be mad bro. they do make bikes small enough that even you can reach the pedals.

but why not get something better than the bottom line product?

Because it's not a value-added expenditure. If you just love riding, then find a bike that doesn't hurt and ride it. Extra thousands of dollars for those conveniences could be much better spent.

A girl I was dating a couple of years ago was like that. She'd bitch and moan about having a bunch of comp time and not being able to afford to take a vacation and use it... because she'd just spent $3000 to buy a bike and get it fitted. She did exactly one charity ride a year and never placed north of mid-pack. I asked why she spent that much, and she gave your reasons. I pressed her, why did she neeeed that stuff?

Her old bike made her thumbs numb.

Dumped her a few weeks later. Don't need no woman who makes those kinds of financial decisions. :p Also, she sucked in bed... or didn't... you get it.
