POS VETT
Change in geometry, and it looks like it wasn't through hardened? Case hardening is fine; the concept is to harden only the surface so it's wear resistant but still maintaining the toughness (i.e. less brittle) everywhere else to retain resistance to impact loading. Change in geometry (i.e. higher number of spline or teeth) may not be cost effective. Radiographic inspection will reveal a flaw (i.e. crack-like feature) otherwise invisible to naked eye. All these will not increase specified load-carrying capacity; only avoiding failure at lower stress level due to existence of a flaw. gbracing81
^yes Paul, do you remember when my Cutlass popped on the Slow Motion dyno a few years ago. I need to put some of those pics up here. http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l622/Gbracing81/IMG-20120517-00540.jpg http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l622/Gbracing81/IMG-20120517-00539.jpg Here's pic of my center section from earlier this year. luckily all I had to replace was the housing, support and pinion yolk and drive shaft. Still expensive but could have been several hundred worse.

Farkas
Time for a skid plate. If you can still run a skidplate, you're not low enough. I'll take the extra 1/4 inch of clearance from not running a skidplate, than running one and bashing it on everything which usually ends up killing the pump. Blew the thrust side of #5 from the head deck to the oil pan rail completely out. This happened on an chassis dyno. Was a 383 making over 400 RWHP and over 600 RWT. The HP curve was still climbing when the engine gave out at 6800 RPM.
