Downsizing wheels from 18" to 17"

The Passat has some seriously cupped tires that I'm replacing. However, the Chinese eBay-special wheels that I got 5 years ago are corroded and one of them may be bent from a recent, awesome pothole. Wheels are 18x8.

I'm looking at getting some new wheels, and in order to save a buck on a 156k mile DD that will last a few more years. Any shame in moving down from an 18" to 17" wheel/tire combo? Found some great deals, and I've always liked how a clean set of shoes makes the car.

Why not go with 16" wheels ? Lighter, nicer ride, even lower price for both tire and wheel, and less likely to be damaged by a pothole.

I like this man's thinking.

And Clay, are you asking to be called stupid? NEVER make a "hey what do you think of these rims" post on columbusracingwheelexperts.com.
