Richard Cranium
You might look into the Raspberry Pi. It's a small, cheap hobbiest computer. There are add on boards that make it easy to interact with the real world (read switches, turn on light bulbs, etc...) I think it would be more interesting to actually build something than just write a program. I know the kids are small, but there are lots of cool projects out there people have done with kids using Raspberry Pi. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/content/en-US/raspberry-pi
paktinat
I learned some Karel early on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_%28programming_language%29 Lego mindstorms are cool too.
zeitgeist57
Subscribed to this thread. I'm good as a shadetree mechanic, but turrible as a techie. Looking forward to giving my kids a chance at a more tech-savvy future.
