You might look into the Raspberry Pi. It's a small, cheap hobbiest computer. There are add on boards that make it easy to interact with the real world (read switches, turn on light bulbs, etc...)

 

I think it would be more interesting to actually build something than just write a program. I know the kids are small, but there are lots of cool projects out there people have done with kids using Raspberry Pi.
