Love it man, I'm really into the pro touring, swapped classic trucks right now. Looking very clean. There's just something fun about a vehicle that wasn't really made to run that way.

Can't wait to see it in person.

Couple updates.

Ive been noticing some metallic residue in the engine compartment. I guessed that the belt was "shredding" even though i couldn't find any evidence initially. I was messing around Friday night and found a bunch of belt dust? behind the alternator pulley. It was pretty much filling the space between the housing and the belt itself. Belt looks fine, alignment looks fine. I can't figure out whats happening. I ordered a new different belt and a new alternator pulley to see if that changes anything. Weird.

I decided to go ahead and pull the trans before summer comes. I dont want to take a chance of trashing my converter if something fails drastically inside the trans. The noise was annoying and its all I could focus on when driving the truck.

It came out pretty easy by myself except for actually getting it out from under the truck. I had to slide it off the floor jack and onto the floor so I can get it out. Little unnerving by yourself. Anyway I dropped it off at Metro this morning. Really nice guys. They should have an update for me in a day or two on what it needs.

Figured Id post an update here since I havent for a bit.

I wish I could say Ive been out having fun in the truck but that hasn't really been the case. I feel like the gremlins are out to get me recently.

In regards to the issues abovem Im still having them. I swapped out a new pulley and a new belt and the engine is still trying to destroy the belt. Slowly and its not a major issue but I am still getting belt residue building up on the alternator.

Metro checked out the trans for me. He said everything was super clean inside with minimal worn parts. He did find a broken parking paw spring and said the clutches could use replacing so I went ahead and upgraded the clutches and went with a newer parking paw setup. He also replaced the rear tail shaft bushing which was worn. About $800 for everything.

I reinstalled the trans with the help of a buddy. The noise and vibration Im feeling is still there.. yay!

I decided to look into the rear end to see if something I had done when I put new gears and LSD were maybe causing the noise to come up the drive line. I drained the fluid and to my horror the fluid was pretty dark and full of metal flake.. yay again!

I tore everything apart and found the bearings to be pitted slightly. The outer axles bearings which I hadn't replaced originally seemed worn so I replaced those. I found loads of gunk in the axle tubes. I assumed this is where the dark fluid and metal residue was coming from. So I went about getting all new bearings and seals. I was concerned about the gears being damaged so I decided to replace them. I ordered a set of cheaper Excel gears in 3.42 instead of 3.73 as I dont need that much gear with the turbo setup.

I put everything together and was having issues getting the diff installed in the carrier. It just wouldn't fit right. Then it hit me. The diff I have only works with 3.73 and higher gears. So I had just tried to install a set of gears that wasn't going to fit. YAY x3

So to continue on with this nightmare I ordered another set of Excel gears in 3.73's and another install kit. In hindsight I should have just reused my original gears. I had my buddy over to help me set everything up. It all went together fine. I had to pull the axle to get enough torque to crush the pinion sleeve. The pattern looked acceptable, etc. I put everything back together today and took it up the road and the gears are super noisy. YAY x4. Ive read a few places online about these Richmond gears being noisy compared to the more expensive Standard Gears I had originally. So now I guess Ill order another pinion bearing and crush sleeve and pull it all back apart and try to reinstall the original gears.

On a small positive note, I decided to have my drive shaft checked out by Columbus Joint and Clutch just to make sure it was balanced. I drove it down and he did it while I waited. Said it was way off. So thats what I get for spending $600 with Driveshaft Specialist out of Texas is a driveshaft that isn't balanced. I did notice less/minimal vibration now at highway speeds. I had been fighting that for a while.

I feel like between Corona and this truck Im in a bad dream that doesn't want to end. And I still dont know whats causing the noise/vibration at my feet when driving the truck in 4th gear. It makes me want to drive it into a pond some days. And it sucks because the engine is running awesome, but the rest of it is a big pile of poo.

Thanks for following along..

Sorry to hear about all of the issues, but glad that your getting it sorted out. You'll be happy when you're cruising this beast around this summer.

It's still a great truck!

I got the rear end back together with the original gears and everything is good there.

I talked to Mike at Metro about my noise and he was happy to go for a test drive with me yesterday. He confirmed the noise but feels confident its not in the trans. He and I both agree that swapping the converter might be a step to take and see if anything changes.

So since I wasn't working yesterday I decided to just pull the trans and see if I could use the old converter or whether I would be better off sending my converter out and having it looked at.

Well everything was going fine until I was maneuvering the trans down on the jack and it started slipping off the trans jack pad and I caught my hand under the trans as it slipped completely off the jack onto the floor. I think the pan lip caught my wrist and the palm of my thumb caught the weight of the trans.

Thankfully my wife was home to get me to the ER. MCM East was mostly dead so they got me in quick and stitched back up. My thumb is pretty numb and not moving quite right so Im seeing an orthopedic on Monday. Scary stuff. Be careful out there.

If you plan on pulling the transmission anymore I would suggest getting a transmission jack for reasons you already know. Harbor Freight has one for a decent price. Stay safe!

Funny you mention that, I was using a trans jack.. not that specific one but similar. The plate the trans sits on just isn't sturdy and the trans can slide on it if you're not careful...

Fixed

haha.

welp. had to have tendon repair surgery on my wrist today. just waiting on this nerve block to wear off so I can get some feeling back in my arm. Its like a heavy wet noodle at the moment. Sounds like recovery might be a couple months. ugh. might have to recruit some friends and fam to maybe stick this trans back.

Sorry to hear that, hope the recovery is 100%. Maybe you just needed some forced time to relax, lol.

Heal up, and I'll just have to vicariously live my classic truck dreams elsewhere for a bit.

How was the hospital during this mess?

Funny you say that, my friends and family have told me it was a sign to just leave $hit alone. They know better, I can't leave ANYTHING well enough alone.

So when I went to the ER on wednesday there was 1 other person in front of me for about a minute and then I basically walked right in and was seen immediately.

Yesterday at the Surgery registration area at MCM East it was a ghost town. I was the only person sitting there for nearly a half hour. The surgery prep and post op I only ever saw one other patient. Im glad it was slow that like for me at least. Keep the chance of me getting sick pretty low. The only thing that made me a little nervous was a pre-op nurse had just gotten back from being quarantined with the virus. But Im sure/hope they go through proper procedures. She test twice negatively. So cross my fingers...

Just and update on my accident. Had the stitches taken out today and got a look at the incision. Also had a new splint molded up to keep my thumb from too much movement.

After talking with the dr I found out I cut 3 tendons (2 in my wrist and 1 in my thumb) and cut my radial nerve which they repaired. No nerve damage though.

Only pain currently is from the incision. The skin is tight and aggravated. Im starting therapy on the thumb once a week. yay..

be careful out there gents.
