opinions on moto guzzi v7?

Not much more than a good running GS500.

I love the look of the V7, but I think you could probably build something just as good, and probably a bit faster for about half the money...

Take an old CB750 and start hacking away. Won't cost you $8k, it'll be ONE of a kind with much more plentiful parts. almost 20 more hp, and with all the weight you're likely to cut off, I bet it gets up and goes better than the V7...

The only thing I like better about the V7 is the torquey twin.

You're both right that there are plenty of cheaper, lighter, faster bikes out there. But you can't compare reving the crap out of a GS500 to just twisting the V7 throttle at 2800 rpm and having 45 ft/lbs on tap. Totally different riding style. And that CB750 is still going to be a top heavy beast - not to mention being a wailing 4-banger - that won't be nearly as light and agile as the V7.

And neither will look like a Guzzi, or sound like a Guzzi, or ride like the Guzzi.

Don't get me wrong, the V7 is a great bike. When you consider the build/component quality and the fact that it is shaft driven, the price isn't out of line either. The reason I mentioned my friends experience (an Italian bike fanatic, btw) is that the allure of form can eventually be overshadowed by deficiency of function. In his case, he wanted a lightweight machine (his only "modern" motorcycle) that would also be suitable for medium/long distance sport touring. As it turns out, he realized that lightweight low hp bikes simply won't work as well at this task as their heftier but more powerful counterparts. In other words, he purchased the wrong bike for his needs...certainly not the V7's fault.

lists of motorcycle seat heights,

http://www.vtwinmama.com/motorcycle_seat_heights.htm

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/school-SectionTwoB.htm

edit: quick calculation, at 5'2", if you want to flat foot a bike. I'd start looking around at a 28" seat height and higher.

Guzzi V7 is 31.7

Guzzi Griso is 31.5

Virago is 28.3

Her height would not be the limiting factor. I would have to make a very slow and deliberate measurement of her inseam to know if the seat height were a problem;)

The last lady who sat on mine said she loved the feeling of all that power between her legs. You are welcome to try it too.
