YSR_Racer_99
So Ben is pretty sure its 288... I think. Yeah, I agree with "Die Thread! DIE!!!!!!"
YSR_Racer_99
Having said that, I'll continue this. In "How I Should Read It", why are you moving the 2 to be under the 48? If this has been addressed, let me know. I'm not reading through 47 pages to find out...Whats the outcome if we just look at 2(9+3)? No other part of the equation, just that piece. I'm sticking with 2.

YSR_Racer_99
http://www.ohioriders.net/picture.php?albumid=1078&pictureid=13702This is from my daughters 7th grade math book. Highlights are in the book (i.e. I didn't add anything).Parens first, then multiplication, then division. 9+3 = 122x12 = 2448/24 = 2There. I've convinced myself. fusion
I think it's cute you guys still think it's purely an order of operations issue. Did you work out the problem with crayon also?
alienpi
The problem with the whole multiplication before division is that, division is simply multiplication by the reciprocal.

SpeedTriple44444
It becomes clearer if you change the problem to all multiplication, rather than a mix.So...48 / 2 * (9+3)=48/1 * 1/2 * (9+3)/1=48/1 * 1/2 * 12/1Now, whichever order you choose to multiply this, you will end up with 288For the record, when I voted days ago, I chose 2, but I believe 288 is correct.
