Having said that, I'll continue this.

In "How I Should Read It", why are you moving the 2 to be under the 48? If this has been addressed, let me know. I'm not reading through 47 pages to find out...

Whats the outcome if we just look at 2(9+3)? No other part of the equation, just that piece.

I'm sticking with 2.

This is from my daughters 7th grade math book. Highlights are in the book (i.e. I didn't add anything).

Parens first,

then multiplication,

then division.

9+3 = 12

2x12 = 24

48/24 = 2

There. I've convinced myself.

It becomes clearer if you change the problem to all multiplication, rather than a mix.

So...

48 / 2 * (9+3)

=48/1 * 1/2 * (9+3)/1

=48/1 * 1/2 * 12/1

Now, whichever order you choose to multiply this, you will end up with 288

For the record, when I voted days ago, I chose 2, but I believe 288 is correct.
