Yamaha's reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo has been ruled out of the Phillip Island MotoGP after a crash in morning warm up.

Lorenzo has had part of his finger severed in the crash.

Strong winds have generated concerns in the paddock and it is believed wind was a factor.

Lorenzo's factory Yamaha teammate Ben Spies as also been ruled out of the race after suffering a concussion in a 270kmh crash during qualifying on Saturday.

The reigning champion was due to start alongside title-rival Stoner from second on the grid but has been ruled out by medical officials at the track.

Stoner visited his Lorenzo in the medical centre at Phillip Island shortly before the Spaniard was transferred to hospital in a private car.

Australian Damian Cudlin has also had another huge crash and may yet be ruled out of the race.
