I was lucky enough to attend the Governor's Energy Summit this year, and I got to hear both sides of the story from the leaders of some of the industry who will benefit from it and those who were protesting it because they think it will ruin their community. Here are the videos. I think they are really interesting.

Not sure if this is really true, but I have a feeling we could possibly put our ground water in danger. We have gas storage well on our property and probably 1 every quarter mile or so. Somehow I think all the gas under there leaks up and brings salt with it. Also have a ton of salt around us (Morton Salt) so maybe that's why we have the problem. Took 5 trys all over oir property to find water w/o salt. Also hate dealing with gas companies about right of ways that seem to always change and telling me I can't pull gas off my well. /end rant

But I'm all for more jobs and income.

So.... What dies the sign oin your drive way say??

Well the posted signs (at the driveways) say Private Property. The next set (right below those) say enter at your own risk - Owner has right to shoot at anytime.

The second set states - Wildlife area - Bird sanctuary. Predators will be shot on site - this includes your dogs and cats. Trespassers will be prosecuted.

...and most just dont get it! :nono:

The state pays me to raise and turn loose Quial and Pheasants through certain times of the year and most of the time pay for my time and loses when I do lose birds. But, the big issue in my area are predators. Dogs Cats Coyotes Bob Cats and humans. Now I am not allowed to legally shoot anyone or predatory birds anymore. I can have you arrested and prosecuted with no problem and the Forrestry officer across the river has no issues coming over and taking care of it either. Especially since I let him train his dog at the field across the street. All and all my largest loss goes to the Predatory birds that you are not suppose to shoot anymore.

I've never really understood that point because most wells are below ground water naturally so regardless if drilled or not, you'd think water would have been affected over the last billion years or however long the earth has been around

As a contractor for gas companies, let me tell you how much I feel your pain on the right of ways. Some companies are better than others but damn if they don't change the right of way about 10x in the planning and even early construction stages

As far as why you can't pull gas off a well on your property, it depends what kind of well and the type and quality of gas thats coming out of it. In typical Ohio wells of the non shale variety, the gas needs processed and cleaned for it to be used safely as well as maximize its performance

A huge conundrum with a question like this. Our country needs to stop being so dependent on foreign oil. We also need jobs. But we CANNOT destroy any of our water surplus's. Zero. It is already becoming a problem elsewhere in our country. Without oil we can survive. Without water we cannot. So answering a question like this is not easy and cannot be given its due justice on a forum like this imho.

The same type of drilling has been going on in PA for 10-15 years and I have yet to hear of or see a study that has had a negative impact on the water supply. If there is one, I would certainly like to read it to see the findings

As a person who doesn't trust big companies, government or anyone who sells a commodity that by all right is in public trust at an amount that receives subsidies from our taxes, I have to admit I have my misgivings.

Maybe if the oil company had to prove financial viability monthly as to ensure the proper funds to preform a full clean up of contaminated water, remediation of a spill, and take care of all the people within 200 miles who now have a mysterious disease caused by the new wells.

They do have to prove the financial viability in case of emergency, they just don't have to do it to the public but instead to their Insurance carrier. And like I stated before, I'd love to see if there really are any findings of mystery diseases from a natural resource that has been around for as long as the earth ;)

From talking to one of the geologists at work on this, the majority of the oil and gas are located below most of the used water tables. This would mean no contamination to drinking water. It's also funny that everyone wants to quit being dependant on foreign oil, use electric/natural gas cars but they never want people to acquire the resources to do this. We can't have both and the companies have to jump through hoops with the department of natural resources, epa, army core and others to protect the environment and the public. I would have to see if the gas companies are like most mineral companies and have to post some sort of bonding against ruining someone's water. I'm also sure they would have to do at a minimum annual water monitoring from people in the area of the well. This is stuff I would have to look into and maybe bad might know the answer.

great post and its pretty much dead on. Before a well is even drilled, the site and process has to be cleared by the EPA, ODNR and usually a local authority. For bigger well sites they usually have at least an EPA agent and usually ODNR too. We've also seen cases where a 3rd party company is hired to monitor the effects on the environment local to the site. I've only seen this personally when we completed the longest single pull bore of pipe in Ohio under the Erie Canal and Cuyahoga river

There is a lot of unused existing oil wells in Ohio. Capped off and sitting idle. The production rate didn't justify the use and collection. That has changed for some, and they are being restarted

A big reason for that is Ohio didn't have the pipeline capacity for the type of gas to come out of those wells nor the processing plants to use that gas. As the shale gas boom is hitting Ohio, both those cases are obviously changing and fast

frackingchart-600x265.jpg

and in this link you can see where the 2% of other stuff is contained in everyday products: http://www.hydraulicfracturing.com/Fracturing-Ingredients/Pages/information.aspx

I'm not saying its the best thing in the world however to me its certainly has more pro's than con's

That's a cute pie chart. Did Dick Cheney give that to you? You'll never know what's in that mixture' date=' because they aren't required to disclose the ingredients to any of us.

[url']http://www.water-contamination-from-shale.com/

Often referred to as "The Haliburton Loophole", Hydraulic Fracturing is exempt from the 1974 SDWA

required no, but they do to us because we work in the area while fracking is done and we have to supply documentation for insurance purposes

IF laws and regulations stay the way they are or relax then drilling will last at least 15 years if not longer. That's a big IF because if people don't fully grasp the way fracking (which is what you alluded to) works and regulations get worse then they could easily pull out because its too difficult or expensive to continue in Ohio.

This is THE reason why I voted for Kasich. He gets it in regards to our industry and what it can do for Ohio. There are farmers in SW PA that barely scraped by until these land leases started happening, now they are multi millionaires!

And no I don't take it wrong at all, I value everyones opinion and although I may not be able to change it as a whole sometimes a little extra education and understanding benefits everyone

I may not "fully grasp" fracking on the level that you do, but I can sure a hell wrap my head around someone lighting his kitchen faucet water on fire, and understand that I don't want this anywhere near my house or anyone else's for that matter.

Kasich understands profiteering above all else. Sure a few farmers in PA got rich for selling leases, does that mean they get to subsidize the hundreds or thousands of people using that water supply's new-found reliance on bottle water? The fracking company's sure as hell not going to...

Makes more sense then putting a casino in down town columbus

Why? Both produce jobs, both produce revenue. I'd argue that a casino has never caused an oil spill, is as environmentally neutral as building an office building, and can be a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization. As for promoting individual wealth (vis-a-vis the land leases), grab a blackjack book and start counting cards. :)

I don't have a problem with drilling. I have a serious problem with fracking.

I have reservations about drilling as long as the company doing the drilling is held to a high environmental standard. There's enough fleshed-out technology for drilling that as long as the municipality is willing to hold the company accountable for leaks and spills, everything runs fairly well. I have a massive problem with fracking.

I don't see Benzene on your list. Why don't I see that? I have seen/read reports where independent testing has concluded benzene was found in contaminated wells.

http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/BE/benzene.html

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure benzene is already in crude oil so it seems misleading.

I could also very well be wrong

They (Dominion) said we pretty much. Had to go higher up the ladder and fight we want a line. Our neighbor is pulling off the same type of well right off our property line, so we. Should be allowed to do it just like them. There's just no reason for us to have to put in a big old propane tank (something like 10K gallon) when we have a gas well sitting right off the lane. So if you work for Dominion tell them we want a gas line! :)

 why am I not suprised its Dominion

We did work for Dominion for over 25 years up until last year when we decided to part ways with them for a variety of reasons. One of which happened to be their ass backwards decision making and the way they have changed the philosophy of running their company

No one here. We can all give opinions though. But there is a whole lot more to all of this. My brother is a geologist. We have discussed similar things. He too says there is nothing to worry about in regards to our water. But, brother or not, his onus is finding oil and getting to it so I figure his opinion is a bit skewed. Just like the vid clip here, there seems to be some correlation between certain types of drilling and contaminated wells. As we have experienced through history, this kind of thing is not new. Water is something we should not, cannot take a chance on losing. Its our lifeblood.

So what you're telling me is not a single person on this forum can speak intelligently about a complex issue such as this. It's totally and completely beyond all 4000 people on this board, the best we can do is fling wild opinions like poo around.

I may not be able to speak intelligently on this since I don't have the geologic background of people like your brother or perhaps someone like Bad (but he's a forum guy, so he's out), but dismissing everyone out-of-hand is just weapons-grade stupid.

What's with the waste wells they are drilling now? There are a few being drilled.near.coshocton

deep well injection is common practice for waste slurry and liquid hazmat disposal. Ohio has waste wells throughout the state, luckily none of which are located in my back yard :p
