Hoblick Posted November 5, 2012 Report Share Posted November 5, 2012 so i have been wanting to do this for a while now, and i think this coming year is going to be that time.from ohio to california and back..but not a straight shot there and back.i want to hit black hills/badlands, SDGlacier National Park, MTCrater Lake National Park, ORGrand Canyon National Park, AZi want to ride the best sections of Pacific Coast Highwayi want to ride mullholand DRi want to see the redwood forest and im sure there is some more attractions i should see.so..what other really good places should i visit, what are the must see places?and what kind of time frame should i have to do this?i can do pretty consistent 600 mile days in the saddle. but would prefer 400, and could do some 800 mile days here and there. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, North Cascades, Banff, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone. Grand Coulee damn, Snake River, Columbia River Gorge (multnomah falls), Tahoe, Monterey, Yosemite. Mt Shasta, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Mt Adams, Mt Whitney.Moab (slick rock trail), Bryce Canyon, Zion, ArchesWine in Walla Walla, Sonoma, Pasa Robles.Personally, I would not try to tie in Grand Canyon and Glacier in one trip. Well, unless you have two months. Go North and do the stuff around Yellowstone. Then take another trip and head south through the Ozarks, OK, TX and do some of the S. CA sites. ohiomike Posted November 5, 2012 Report Share Posted November 5, 2012 as of right now i have 16 days off end of june, beginning of julyWe rode out and did a big loop going as far west as Salt Lake City. We did kill 4 days in Utah, but overall it took us nearly 16 days while riding 400-500 miles daily. Overall, iirc, we rode around 5k miles. One day in Utah we rode out to the Salt Flats in Nevada. That took several hours there and back.Seems I was figuring some mapping for riding to the left coast and back, nearly straight there and back using the majority of miles on the slab, and figured 2-3 weeks. That doesn't take into account having to lay over an extra day somewhere due to inclement weather or breakdowns either.Your idea is a great one though. There is so much absolute beauty right here within the continental borders....I have had this bucket list note to ride the entire US. redkow97 Posted November 5, 2012 Report Share Posted November 5, 2012 call me negative nancy, but I foresee a high potential for issues.I really don't mean to rain on your parade, Ryan, but I assume part of the reason you started this thread is to identify potential problems so that they can be planned for and avoided, yes?400 miles a day is going to get old very quickly. You can hope to average that much, but there will be a serious need to schedule in some days of not only non-riding, but just straight up rest.Are you planning to camp, or stay in hotels? Obviously the latter is more expensive, but it also cuts down on the gear you'll need, and makes some of the longer hauls more manageable from a mental perspective. drc32-0 Posted November 6, 2012 Report Share Posted November 6, 2012 (edited) Highway 1 is pretty cool the whole way,but I really liked the area around Fort Bragg...pretty twisty and nice high cliffs.Big sur,south of Montery is beautiful!The Golden Gate all the way to Ureka is pretty cool.If you're going to be in northern California be sure to ride SR 36,I missed it when I was out there and I have regretted it ever since.A good source for CA roads is Pashnit.com.Another good source is Destination Highways Northern California...tons of info.PM me you're address and you can borrow mine if you want to check it out.As for the redwoods...don't miss "The Avenue of the Giants" south of Ureka.You really should see Yosemite!!Going into the Yosemite valley from the west is one of the most beautiful sites in America.If you can swing the time ride the Sonora pass while you're in the Yosemite area.More big trees at the Mariposa Grove.Two incredible mountain roads...The Beartooth Pass and Chief Joseph Scenic Byways...West of Cody WY.If you haven't seen the Grand Canyon yet...it is truly awe inspiring!!!It's a shame you're wife won't camp,you meet a lot more interesting people camping.As someone said on another motorcycle forum,"I can't remember one motel room I've stayed in,but I'll never forget some of the campsites I stayed at."For me,one of those camp sites was Colter Bay at The Grand Tetons.Enjoy you're trip...this kind of trip can be a life changing experience.All in a good way.
