Blitz
Question for you gun guys. I have an old 20 guage single shot break open shotgun. It's was made by the bridge gun company. From online research I've found that it was manufactured by either Shapleigh or Stevens firearms and is around d 100 years old. I have fired modern shot shells through it many times and it's a damn firecracker of a squirrel gun. But I am in between deer guns this year and I'm thinking about taking it out for a couple days. So my question is:Would it be ok to shot rifled slugs through it.? Not Sabot slugs but the regular slugger type. From what I've read its ok to do this even on full choke guns as the slugs will compress and not harm the barrel. Any experience with this? Helmutt
Ultimately, its up to you....its your face and hands, but I'm a stickler for safety especially when slugs are being considered in an older weapon.
cOoTeR
I wouldn't do it. Even if the barrel holds up to it I'm not so sure the stock will being that it is 100 years old. My biggest worry would be the chamber holding up to the pressure generated.

ReconRat
Modern rifled slugs will deform to fit through the choke. The raised rifling on the slug is what compresses in the choke, allowing it to work with even a full choke.I don't like the idea, but that's what I read.It will mess up the accuracy.50 yards should not be a problem. (3" groups at best)There are some exceptions. Check the website of the ammo manufacturer for details.Typically specialty slugs or sabots should not be fired in choked barrels.http://www.chuckhawks.com/shotgun_slugs.htmedit: ummm, about that 100 year old part. Yeah, I wouldn't mess around. That is probably not what that shotgun should be used for anymore. Technically, you should run it past a gunsmith to see what they think about it. (Scruit can help with that, he's got more cameras than a porn studio). Make sure you start out saying "Hold my beer, watch this shit". So we all can enjoy the excitement.
Blitz
That's exactly what I read about the slugs Recon. And my Dad told me back a long time ago when he cleaned it up for me that he shot a couple slugs through it and it shot high..... like strangely high. . Based on the research of the name it could have been manufactured any time between 1890-1932. Modern ammo came out around 1930 and from what I've read anything made after 1930 should be fine. So..... it's a toss up. I am normally the "better safe than sorry" type when it comes to firearms. But I'd really like to fill my freezer. I bought a license and a tag and was supposed to go hunting with my cousin's gun but it didn't work out. If anyone has a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun they'd let me borrow they could hold onto and shoot my AR15 as collateral. Either that or I'm gonna be posting a boring or explosive video to youtube. Hahaha
Pokey
You are gonna wound a deer........miss a deer......or possibly hurt yourself while doing so. Why do it when consensus is "not to"? I would gladly loan you my 870, and I would keep your AR until you were done. I don't have a slug barrel on it, but it is 100% safe and pretty damn accurate as is. Sure, everything might work out fine but if not the consequences are great. I'd definitely appreciate being able to borrow your 870, and my AR is a beautiful gun and I'd be happy to leave it with you. I'll be in Columbus tomorrow for school and could pick it up then..... or we can work out a time that works for both of us. Just shoot me a PM with your phone number and we can work it out. Thanks for the offer man, I really appreciate it.
Gump
I don't think it will be accurate.

Blitz
Inbox is clear. No, an 870 with or without a slug barrel will be plenty accurate. That's what I used to have before selling it for a compound bow I no longer have.

Scruit
At 100 years old? I'd check with a gunsmith before you shoot anything new through it. Not just for this season, but for anything really. Internet people saying "should be fine" will be of little consolation in the unlikely event of a problem and you destroy the gun. Or your head.
