Vin number on the frame '70 up. Pre '70 is motor number. Usually on the left side above the timing plug. But so many of them have been "re-numbered" or fully modified (new frame, new cases) it's almost a mute point. I've got a '56 that most would not be sure of the year until they checked the engine number. It is an oil leaking, maintenance $$$ hole in my garage, that I've owned since '78. I'm going to be buried with it.

This is really dependent on who your fighting. If you are fighting a mainline army, wounded soldiers become a logistics problem with the opposite side tying up resources and manpower trying to save their lives. 5.56 is fantastic at this. If your fighting disorganized rebels, warlords and Muslim insurgents that have no respect for even their own lives, wounding a person doesn't help. They will just leave them behind to slowly bleed out while taking pot-shots at anything that moves in the area. Those guys are much better off doa with a 30cal hole in them.
