With ANY thin cleaner added to the crankcase, be sure to not run it very hard, or very long, IMO. Put the stuff in, run it for a while, drain it, rinse repeat, yada yada.... One thing I do to help with sludg buildup in my cars is to add about 1/2 quart of transmission fluid about 1000 miles before the oil change. The good ole Intrepid would use/leak enough to have room for it by then. ATF has more detergents in it, and that small amount won't hurt a thing. I have no reason to bother with anything on the bikesm they're both sqeaky clean on the inside.

I probably had some on my bench you could have had! That set of carbs is pretty much a "parts pile" now. I might use one of the bodies, and misc pieces here and ther on my bike, but not the whole set.

Should've grabbed my Snap-on phillips bit, it has ACR's to keep it from "camming out" out the screw head. That cover might not even take a gasket, or even if it does, you can probably use sealer (Hondabond, or the right stuff, not just RTV).

Just don't fall and bust your ass in the process.. Oops! Too late!

Buy a GM, the PCM will tell you when the oil has degraded.... /sarcasm I don't trust that system, and still recommend 3k for conventional and 4-6k (depending on the vehicle) for synthetic. Someone mentioned VW in this thread, and 10k intervals. I question that for some of their engines. I know for a FACT that if you go too long just a few times on a 1.8t you WILL have issues. I've had to clean out the oil pickup in several of those.

You would be surprised the amount of vehicle neglect I see on a daily basis...

Did you pull the cover yet to look at the starter clutch and gears like I mentioned? If there's no problems in there, then it is probably the starter itself (brushes?) Discuss it tomorrow at work...

I've seen worse! But it didn't run.... 2000 Chevy 6.5 Turbo Diesel, I think the engine had about 20k on it, had to have never been changed, ran low on oil, and possibly on overheating problem. I let my Intrepid (ithe the notorious 2.7 sludge monster engine) go 6k on the last synthetic oil change, and I'm not happy with how the oil looked, so this time it's going to be 4k. Somewhere in the 4-5k range is probably where I'll keep it with synthetic, and 3k on the button for conventional (which I plan to stay synthetic.) The engine has almost 190k on it, I've had it since about 62k, and except for a rod bearing that started "peeling" (replaced just the bearing, no crank damage or anything, after driving 5-8k miles making noise) no problems with the engine!

That looks likr it will be MUCH easier to fix that leak! Even if it needs new carb boots (or whatever it has to attach the carbs) it should be cheap and easy! From what I can see, the valves don't look that bad. They will have some buildup on them, and that doesn't look to be anything out of the normal. You should see some of the cars I've worked on! I started into my bike a little bit today, but I'll do something unusual for OR and put that in my own thread to keep this one on topic....
