  1. honda_electric_assist_01.jpg

After cannibalizing his girlfriend’s bike for parts, filleting the frame with a Sawzall and installing electric motors and batteries, Santa Cruz handyman Geoff Bjorgan successfully converted a 1986 Honda motorcycle into an electric, pedal-assist bike.

A 120 lb. electric, pedal-assist bike. With a steampunk aesthetic. This bad boy is no Mission One, but it’s still cooler than Steve McQueen.

“I was more concerned with look than function,” Bjorgan told Autopia. “The bike is heavy, definitely a flatlander, but it cruises at 21 mph so I’m happy.”

  2. so far you guys are a ton of help! thanks!

    Glad to be of help.

I think that Recons comments are the ones you should try first. It's a more general solution so it's more likely to be true. Especially on a 1977 bike.

But if you have good fuel flow, take a look at those plug wires.

If they are not seated properly or arc/short out you get some real weird results. Like that strange come-and-go idle trouble you are having.

If you have to replace the spark plug wires you will find that nobody has them for less than a bajillion dollars for a bike that old.

So try NAPA part# 780310, you will need 4 of them ($5 each). I happen to have just done this mod to my 1980 KZ so I still have the NAPA box/P#.

One end has a spark plug fitting the other end you wont need.

Cut off the connector you don't need and push the wire into the coil tower so the little spike pokes into the center conductor.

Oh! make sure to put the twist on caps back on the coil wires to hold them securely in place.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Other thoughts.

Idle problems on my 1980 KZ were helped by.

New spark plug wires, which caused me to also find that the wires weren't seated properly.

    Low voltage on the coils, which is an issue for all older bikes. See this thread for info;

    http://www.wgcarbs.com/forum/index.php?topic=263.0

A lot of good info there for "Vintage Bikes"

Between those two issues I got the bike running 40% better.

Lost a high speed miss, an idle issue and it became a much better behaved bike.

    Starts quicker, jumps higher etc.

For carb issues see this guide:

    and this one:

    Hope this helps.

  4. I had a great time last night. GOT MY ENDORSEMENT ON MY LICENSE AND REAL PLATES (no more 30 day tags) TODAY!!! ($111 dollars later...)

    I'm friggn' stoked!!! STOKED!!!!

ps--- I don't have my card reader here with me at the public library but when I get back home I'll post some pics I took at Hooters last night.

    Good for you!

    :ttiwwop:

  5. ok so ya i deff dnt feel like reading all 27 pages so whos going...im from westerville and so is anyone from the north side going? anyone meeting up befor hand and riding there? I need to get out the house and eat and meet people :D

I'm also on the north side. I don't know of anybody meeting to ride over there.

Best bet is 270 to Roberts to Hilliard-Rome rd, left on Hilliard-Rome rd, then look for a Key Bank or Advance Auto Parts on the left (~ 1-2 mi)

It's behind the bank with the Hooters flags. If you get to the 70/270 exchange you went to far

If you wanted to meet so you know where you are going let me know in the next 40 minutes or so.

  6. I've seen claims like this for a long long time.

I don't believe any of them.

If it were true, we'd all be using them.

    This plug specifically;

multiple electrodes are good, with the use of a high voltage ignition.

Spark conducted along insulator, mixed feelings, spark in air gap is basic standard.

Spark plug extended into combustion chamber, it's been done, it didn't catch on.

The NGK Iridium is fine. Lots of bang for the buck.

In aviation, two plugs per cylinder is better than one. But two magnetos are better also.

In drag racing, in general, a standard plug will have the gap increased until the trap times decrease.

In racing in general, plugs are sometimes indexed so that the electrode gap points toward the mass of the combustion chamber air charge.

Any "wizard" plugs with special claims: Gotta see the dyno or trap times to believe it.

Typically, the dyno chart shown is for a bike that had bad plugs as tested.

Typically, attempts to repeat that dyno chart on your bike won't work.

My experience: I've had spark plugs break and drop pieces into the combustion chamber.

So I won't be the one to mess around with plugs I'm not sure of.

edit: ahhh, one more thing, on multiple electrode spark plugs, the spark tends to fire in only one place anyway. (Path of least resistance.) No advantage until it moves to a new location, and then it's still the same.

    +2

I think just about covers it.

  7. I was hoping that 12 o'clocker would ride and do some stunting, and that we would have a good mix of bikes cruiser and sporty also to "show off" our diversity...

would also like to have 2 bikes to ride out front to carry the O.R. banner...

also, even if you don't want to do the parade, you are all invited to the hall afterwards to have a cook out, same as the last one 4217 e. main st whitehall ohio 43213....

if anyone wishes to bring side dishes that would be great too...

so, please post up if you are coming to the parade (meet time at 9 am at the hall) or just the cookout, or both... so I can get an idea of how much food to purchase and how many spots will be filled with bikes... thanks.

    The parade would start when?

    The cookout would start when?

I should have read this a little closer before posting my last comment.

So, you want Ohio Rider people to ride in the parade itself?

So the KoC does not have it's own bikes, but wishes to add ours to the parade?

    As in 2mph formation riding?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just not getting what is going on past the food part, missed lunch, might have something to do with it.

  8. Knights?

Do we have to wear green wool tights? :D

(Shameless reference to cheesy TV commercial)

    Hmmm...

    4217 e. main st whitehall ohio 43213....

    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=4217+e.+main+st+whitehall+ohio+43213&ie=UTF8&ll=39.945805,-82.831764&spn=0.145554,0.270538&z=12&iwloc=A

Ahhh! Knights of Columbus, so no green wool tights then. There's a relief!

Sounds like fun, so what all is going on there? Besides a Parade and some grub?

I didn't know the KoC were into bikes. Shriners I have heard of.

    3848592_1d0abce5ca.jpg?v=0

What kind of parade is it going to be?

A serious one or a spoof kinda parade like the Shriners clown parade?

What kinda bikes will be in the parade?

    181962088_cf007e3a03.jpg?v=0

Ok, no smart remarks about the bike in the sig please!

It is bigger than the one in the picture above and my feet aren't anywhere near that big!

  9. Sorry brother, sux out there.

Just sign up for unemployment and sling drugs like the rest of us.

    My personal view of Columbus:

    North Side - Drug dealers

East Side - You'll get shot

South Side - You'll get your car stolen

West Side - You'll get hit by an uninsured Mexican

    Central - You're gay

So, you are from the North Side? :D

    Srusly thou...

    :whyclick:

If your into that kind of thing that is...

To be fair a large number of IT people would rather collect un-employment and watch glue dry instead of working there.

(Or, be covered in honey and live on an fire ant farm, or wear milk bone underwear and work at the dog pound, or...)

On the other hand, it's a $10/hr job.

  10. If you're running from a helicopter it should probably be for more than a minor misdemeanor...

But, how would you know you were running from a chopper?

Or would that be on the order of:

LEO said "Your Honor, I had to do 120mph just to catch up with them".

Defendant replied. "And exactly how long after I went by did you wait till you started your car and or gave chase? One minute, two minutes, five minutes?"

  11. Update: Problem solved with some silicone sealer. I swear that and duct tape _is_ a tool box!

    (I'm talking about a 1980 Kawasaki)

The happy owner before me put some way cool yellow "High Performance 8.5mm" spark plug wires and new rubber weather-proof boots that fit on the coils of my bike. Of course the original 8.0mm wire screw on retainers didn't fit so they threw them away.

Make it work with less parts, right?

Of course they were crap and arced everywhere.

So I replaced them with 8.0mm wires. From NAPA of all places as single lead wires - read from the coil to the distributor on a car - $20.00 and down the road! :o

But after about 1000 mi they worked loose and to make a long story short it ran poorly. I have tightened the wires up but with only the poor fitting little rubber boots holding them in I don't expect this to last long.

Any ideas on how to hold the wires securely in place?

Kawasaki does not seem to sell these as separate items.

Might they be the same size for Honda, Suzuki etc?
