I might actually bring a spare battery down with me this year. Had the bike cut out on me right next to the Fontana turn-off and refuse to start for about 10'ish minutes last year (totally dead for 2-3 minutes, power back for 5-7 with a bunch of click, prime, hit starter, gauges wipe/reset, click, prime, hit starter, gauges wipe/reset, etc). 2spooky4me

You'll like NM. I've been here visiting family for the past 3 weeks... your route goes right past where I am (Los Cerillos, on 14). Madrid gets pretty busy during the summer months, tons of bikers because of that wild hogs movie from a few years back being filmed there. The Ski Santa Fe access road (you pick it up in Santa Fe, Artist Road/475) is worth the short jaunt as well, there are some really great views up there. The peak is at 12,000 feet, the base lodge is somewhere around 9,000 feet, you can see forever. If you're looking for accommodations around the Santa Fe area, there are a few options downtown on the Plaza (La Fonda or Inn of the Anasazi) or, just up 475 a bit there's a nice Japanese-style onsen + spa called Ten Thousand Waves that has cabins you can rent (good restaurant, massages, hot springs, etc). Stop in Cerillos as well if you have time. A couple of new little shops are opening up there this spring as well as a restaurant. Young Guns was filmed there back in 89 along with a few other movies over the years.

I'm not certain that the engine was overheating. The temp gauge jumped from the usual 5-6 bars to flashing without any in-between. The time between turning the bike off and starting it up again was a matter of 10-15 seconds and that was enough to drop the temp gauge down to the 5 bars it was at before the overheat warning. I checked for a coolant leak, checked the reserve and it was at the correct level. I suppose the thermostat could be stuck. I'll double check all of this though just to rule it out. If I set it up and let it idle and it throws the same error then coolant is probably the issue.

I moved wires around to see if I could create a short (no success) but I haven't disassembled it to check things out. I guess I'll put that on my project list. It seems like a short somewhere to me too, it's just finding where the hell it is that's going to take 5 years and some counseling.
