  6. I hesitated to post this, simply because of what the format turned out to be, but eh... it's up to you if you participate (I personally will not be)... The Details: Saturday, September 20, 2014 Ride for Wings Poker run Starts at the Wet Spot Bar in Caledonia Ohio I don't have the dollar amounts, but it will be something like $25 per single, $30 with passenger. This will be a fairly typical poker run, with the pirates and booze. **ALL Proceed will directly benefit Wings of An Angel in Marion Ohio. The Story: Wings of an Angel helps children with special needs receive the therapies, services and equipment that are beneficial to their journey in life. The purpose and drive for Wings of an Angel comes from the personal experience with our angel in Heaven who benefited from such therapies and services. Experiencing firsthand the positive impact to families drives us to advocate for the children. I can personally attest to the "epic wonderfull-ness" of this organization.. even though it is still in its infancy. It was my ex brother in law who was the in home caretaker for a wonderful disabled boy, who saw what stresses were bore by the parents because of the lack of localized care, and financial assistance for special needs, and disabled children. Though that Child passed, his legacy is, indeed, carried on by his parents, who have struggled to start this organization for a few years now. For more details about the organization, visit : Wings of an Angel
  7. I use Surefire Sonic Defenders, in particular I have the EP3 model. (EP4 are the same thing, just for bigger ear canals) http://www.surefire.com/tactical-equipment/hearing-protection.html Nice thing is that I can use these on the range, at concerts, etc... 2 levels of noise blocking... open the filter, and allow lower level noises through, such as normal conversation, but they still mute loud noises. close the filter, and they run much like the cheap foamies. They sit in the ear-lobe far enough that they are out of the way of things like ear muffs, helmets, etc... I have shot everything up to a 454 casull with these, without issue. I ride with the filter closed, as it helps mute the constant wind noise. I also can still hear the bike still, and have no issue with the BT Comm unit either.
  8. Most definitely a scam. I receive these types of calls nearly daily... I finally gave the one guy heck, and even talked to his "supervisor". (his supervisor sounds an awful like like the same voice I was just speaking to) Just a tip or hint... any time you receive an unsolicited call about your computer, and even if they aren't asking to directly connect to your computer, don't follow their instructions. A lot of these guys are no longer trying to convince people that they will connect and "fix the issue". Instead, they ask that you go a "tech-fix-it" dot-com site, download software that supposedly fixes the problem, then charge you to correct all the additional issues that the newly downloaded software created. It's often referred to in the industry as "ransom-ware" Ask them for legitimate business information, and listen to them fumble over their own words...
  9. What bandana? I thought I just needed a tshirt/shorts and flip-flops... no one ever told me about a bandana? Thanks for the advice and the links... I don't necessarily have "cubic cash", but its all a matter of prioritizing my spend... and safety is a bit high in that list... As I am not getting much riding in right now (it's perfect bicycling weather...) I am holding out to see what Todd might have... but if that doesn't work out... I will certainly look at some of the options you have given...
  10. Todd - I might take you up on that offer... looking at sizes, it seems to depend on the manufacturer... so I honestly don't know what size to give you... I will send you a PM with a bit more information... Yes, that is my dilemma... I didn't think about the effect of loosing weight when I bough the gear I have now...so here I am... I am not sure that I will just add the MX guards... I am concerned with more than just the padding...what about how loose the jacket is... if I do go down, I don't want the jacket to slide out of place, and cause me to be picking gravel out of my skin for weeks...or worse...asphalt burn... Between the stuff I just bought to upgrade the bicycle, and the replacement of my gear for the motorcycle... this "getting healthy" thing sure is getting expensive!
  11. I am not so concerned about the cost, within reason... the gear is a cheap life insurance policy...and I get that the fit is of great importance... hence the question... I guess what I am trying to figure out: Do I go ahead and plan on buying new jacket/pants/suit 2 more times, one set now, and another set 20-30 pounds in the future? How much margin in "snug and proper fit" is there, would the gear I buy now still be safe with 20-30 pounds less of me? Given the lack of a good fit at 40 pounds difference, I am not honestly sure...
  12. I know it's already pretty much been said... but I'll throw my $.02 in... I am 5' 5", riding a factory height cbr600. When I bought the bike, I had discussed the potential of lowering it, as I came from the cruiser world, where the lower seat allowed me to flat foot the bike with both feet. The conclusion that I came to: I needed to learn balance and one foot stops. I was not willing to sacrifice the handling of a "track oriented bike" when all I needed to do was learn a new technique. Lowering link: $60 Labor and total cost: $250 Realization that lowering the bike doesn't make me a better rider: PRICELESS!
  13. With the conversation about gear going on in the "I crashed my bike, I love wearing gear" thread, about the armor of a jacket just rolling over, the following thought occured to me: I bought my jacket 40 pounds and a few waist inches ago. At what point should I consider the gear I have unsafe due to size? It is a much looser fit now, and the armor moves all over the place. I still have 20-30 pounds to loose before I am at my goal, so do I wait and buy the correctly sized gear then, or should I go ahead and get some new, more properly fit gear now? I am talking street gear, not track leathers....
  14. Not really anything more to tell of it... she was a passenger, bike was stopped on the side of 270, she flopped right over, from the stopped bike. Just like omega said.
  15. It was fun...to an extent... but the urge to use the empty lanes and speed away certainly did come over me a few times... but eh... it was entertaining to see the lady faceplant it, and the weather certainly was nice... Check that one off the list....
  16. I should be there around 5:45p. And yes, I will be sporting the blazing orange "don't hit me, I am a motorcyclist" gear... can't miss it if you wanted to....
  17. I am close enough to QSL that I am planning on going straight there...unless a decided on meet up location makes enough sense for me.
  18. I will also add: Because of the way the electric distribution system is built... a backfeed can go much further up the line than just your house, thus, endangering a lineguys life 2, 3 or more houses up the road. Considering the transfer switch, like what GUMP linked, only costs $230... can you truly say not spending $230 is worth potentially killing someone?
  19. my $.02: POINT 1: having worked for a electric supplier, I can tell you that a lineguy's worst fear during last mile power restoration is a back fed generator... While it will technically work... alot of the line guys will skip over a last mile restoration issue where the house is being powered by generators, unless they can see that a proper transfer switch, and proper generator installation was performed. In some areas, a back fed generator (plugging a male-to-maile extension cord into the house electric wiring) is considered a code violation, and believe me, when a lineguys life is on the line... many are not afraid to report the violation... Should you still choose to back feed the generator, the process should be something like this: Step 1 after power goes out: TURN OFF MAIN BREAKER(S) Step 2 after power goes out: Think about where your generator is right now, then TURN OFF MAIN BREAKERS Step 3: Look at the generator, but don't touch it, no GO TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKERS You get the point... Don't even think about turning on the generator, or plugging the house into the generator via a back feed cable without turning off the main breaker(S) POINT 2: Back feeding your generator takes a lot more thought than simply making or purchasing a male to male cable and plugging it in. Circuit breakers are not isolation devices, in the case of a back feed... this means that you may be able to power more outlets in the home than what is on that circuit breaker... it all depends on the neutral bond that was made at the electric panel. Because of this, you need to ensure that your back feed extension wiring can handle the back feed amperage, that your house wiring can handle the amperage, etc... I have referred people to this site before as a good resource for back-feeding the home, should an emergency arise and you so desire: http://www.tcscooters.com/backfeed.htm
