  1. If my Facebook is representative, we've abandoned abandoned religion only to channel our spiritual urges toward organic recipies purchased at Whole Foods. The Apple store has been substituted for the temple. Religious pilgrimages still take place, it's just the late-20-something females trying to 'find themselves' (in the touristy parts of major cities in western europe.)
  2. A large part of adult behavior revolves around signalling you care, as a way of strengthening an individual's bond with family and tribe. The people on your FB are engaged in performance (mainly for a 3rd party audience as opposed to the sick individual) to signal that they are both compassionate and loyal members of their particular religious tribe.
  3. Not to hijack, but is there anyone recommended in Columbus who does a good job with forks/ suspension setup? I was going to make that my winter project. Could ship them out, but would rather do it somewhere local with a quick turnaround.
  4. Well that's what you're fancy book learnin might say but I'm here to tell you 100% of the weird little fucks in my neighborhood have at least one old-ass parent.
  5. My understanding of the data is that global temperatures haven't risen in the last 17 years at all. This fact tends to be glossed over by those making a living studying global warming or advocating against industrial civilization.
  6. Can someone please work to legalize lanesplitting (bicycle and motorcycle) and incorporate that into the curriculum as well?
  7. Some good points, but Im not exactly sure what his thesis is. Is he trying to make the point that Manufacturers have done long-term harm to motorcycling by delivering American consumers what they want? This is a claim that generally trips my bullshit detector: do journalists with no skin in the game really have a better grasp of the market than the firms who are making $100M investments? I do agree that Ducati is a bright spot in the industry. They currently have at least 5 models I would love to own. The current panagale in white is the best looking sportbike ever made, full stop.
  8. The rat - race can be a ringer. It's only worth doing if you legitimately enjoy your work. The money alone will not sustain you for 80+ hour workweeks in the long run. At least that's the conclusion I came to at appx age 30 when I jumped off the fast track in favor of more free time. I will say this w/r/t time with your kids-- the most important things you can give them are a) their lives to begin with and b) a materially safe existence and c) love. When those are in place, they have the ability to achieve their potential. Quality time with the parents is nice, but overrated in the grand scheme of things. They will remember the high points, and your personal qualities, not the quantity of time you spend with them. My parents ate shit, figuratively, so I could enter adulthood on a better trajectory than they did, and I consider that more loving than attending all my little league games. Life is full of tradeoffs. That's what makes things interesting.
  9. ^^I was waiting for the snark on that best-run comment. heh. Im honestly all for pretty open immigration policies in the US. I think this country could accommodate about a billion people, and we'd be all the more well off for it. But the current system prioritizes immigration from the 3rd world at the expense of the 1st world, in a big way. If we've chosen we're going to limit immigrants to X-number per year, which btw I believe is way too small, let's at least get a better mix. That digression aside-- can we please keep out those coming from an active epidemic zone, as well as those who want to destroy western civilization (aka a religion not to be named here.)
  10. My 2-year this month gets flagged by TSA for the special pat-down and explosives swab, yet it's somehow cool for motherfuckers from Liberia to just waltz on in. Being as this is the richest, freest, and best-run country in human history, I would say we command a bit of a buyers-market when it comes to who we let in our borders. In an environment where we are going to limit immigration to some number, Is it such a crazy thought to prioritize people who have a bit more to contribute?
  11. #2 and #3 seem like kind of freak things. Regarding #1: I also have a little over 1 year riding experience under my belt and my biggest takeaway is this – the bike is always capable of cornering harder than I initially give it credit for. As long as you do your part** the bike isn’t going to simply lowside out of nowhere. **Do your part meaning get on the gas early and push the inside bar Hard if you go in too hot. A very helpful body position cue for me has been “kiss the inside mirror” while looking through the turn. Also have good tires— you don’t want them to be the cause of any doubt in the back of your mind. I think both you and I need to hit the track in order to take things to the next level.
  12. AGV GP Tech Elements helmet. Size L. Wondering if you have any stock of these and whether you'd be able to beat the Revzilla price?
  13. If that's what you're budgeting, mine probably isn't for you. Your wife might kill you if you show up with this old POS, lol.
  14. Where are you located? I have a gas range sitting in my garage I would let you have for free. It is early 1990s vintage and doesn't look modern at all, but it works and the price is right.
  15. Yes. It's the same thing when people complain about the "predatory" payday loan business. Sure 20%+ interest rates seem bad, until you realize the alternative to capping them is no credit at all. It's pretty presumptuous for regulators to take options like this off the table for someone's own good. Give folks the choice and let them vote with their wallet.

    ISIS

Not sure. How much overlap is there between the anti-Assad resistance and ISIS?
  17. Well that is a pretty god damned tasteless way to drum up business. If anyone is motivated to make their displeasure known, here is the school's contact info: teachme@ridelikeachampion.com 855.743.3927 Maybe request to dropped into the voice mailbox of Nick Ienatsch.

    ISIS

I don't really follow foreign affairs, so maybe some can clarify this for me... but had Congress voted Yes 1 year ago, we would have been fighting on the side of the people we are bombing this morning, no, and bombing the other people?
  19. Of the foolish shit I see happening on highways on a daily basis, it seems like the chain of events for a majority of it can be traced to an asshole blocking the left lane. "keep right except to pass; yield to faster traffic" is about the only the fundamental rule you really need on the highway. If that is happening, the rest sorts itself out. I would love to see the highway patrol enforce something promoting safety, as opposed to something easy to prove in court with a laser gun.
  20. In 2014 America there are very few situations where it's legally advisable to use a firearm escalate an encounter where a property-crime is being committed against you. Even fewer where a property-crime is being committed against someone else. And situations where a property-crime may be in progress against someone else? Come on. The Midget is giving you good advice... don't be in such a hurry to tip your hand. Take a photo, call the cops, leave your options open... As the scene played out here, what is your upside? Some small probability 3 individuals in your county will stop targeting car rims in your hood?
  21. I year in Europe drove home for me the fact that American drivers are a special breed of ignorant cunt. You simply will not find cars snail - racing in the left 2 lanes in Germany. In France cars will make space for motorbikes splitting down the center of a 2 lane undivided highway. When I split the left 2 lanes on 315 during rush hour I've never had less than 3 people honking at me over a 5 mile strech. Which probably means 10x that number of cages are pissed off. Somehow the reaction that we are "cheatin em" trumps the fact that we are adding a fuck ing extra lane of traffic to speed things up.. Ohio is worst than most places in the US too.. there is just a special kind of turd that resides in America's Midwest.. and he's usually driving a pickup truck.
  22. I think the approach of buying something she will 'grow into' could work against you... The focus should be on buying something utterly forgiving, that produces the least amount of anxiety to ride. Eliminate any negative emotions around riding so she sticks with it. To that end, even a 500 has quite a bit more power than a 250, and weighs about 100 lbs more. Get one of the new Kawi or Honda 300s or 250s. They are the perfect beginner bikes and there is little reason to get anything else unless she's ridden some dirt bike.
  23. Base Outback 2.5 sells for low $20k's new. If they offer a 0% loan, that's probably a pretty good value even compared to used vehicles. All the new Subarus seem to be moving toward CVTs, though, which I don't know what to think about.
  24. That guy is doing a few things right in life.
  25. Loved the article. It should be exhibit A on ways the US Medical establishment is ass-backwards. Looking at the data, it has been know for quite a while there is a strong causal relationship between alcohol consumption and decreased mortality. It's not just a correlation, which is what most people currently assume. The implication of this? Primary care doctors, parents, schools, etc. should be encouraging consumption. But that is unlikely to happen because we are just not hard-wired to correctly assess risk. We see drunk driving fatalities and addicts, and assume the impetus to prevent those things outweighs the benefits of extending the lives of countless millions of others. Fuck the establishment. I will continue boozing it up on a daily basis and hope the kids follow my example.
