  1. Truth is GA is dying in the United States. The production flows to where the money is and these days General Aviation in China is a growth industry. To be honest I am happy that Mooney is in production at all, I don't particularly care who owns it and where it happens as long as the products come to market. The only downside to people who are shopping for a used mooney, prices are going to go up again, so buy now. I can never understand why when your airplane company is out of production the value of the plane bottoms out, an old plane is just an old plane, but it does. Considering Mooney has been supporting their existing fleet with parts even when they weren't producing aircraft it shouldn't have made a difference but it did.   2. I'm so sick of gulf livery. I like it on old porsches and original GT40s, but for a while every thrid hipster was painting the old honda/ new thuxton gulf colors. totally burned out on it.

    It's quite a small jump from pill addiction to Heroin use, they are both opiates and have surprisingly similar effects. For anyone who has taken OxyContin you pretty much know what low level heroin use feels like. but still these are not casual pill users making the jump from oxy to H, you have to already have a pretty consistent chemical dependency going on. This is a lot different from the college drug scene I remember in the 90's where H was purely a recreational drug like acid and pot. I even had a college professorof mine, a holdover of the 60's generation and a friend of hunter Thompson, ask me to score her some once (I am not now nor have I ever been a drug dealer) and she called me a square because I told her I couldnt. It was a much different user demographic 20 years ago. We tend to forget about modern heroin users in everyday life because most are not kids, but actual adults from 25-65 in functioning society. It's pretty easy for some to have a serious addiction and still be able to hold down a job and look normal. Yes and no. Get physically injured enough to go to the hospital and they will throw tons of pain meds at you. It's continuing the prescriptions in a legal way that are harder. I broke my back in 2013 and the hospital gave me a two month supply of oxy, right off the bat no problem. The more shocking thing is when it ran out I decided not to renew I was actually dope sick for about two weeks. A casual acquaintance saw me during that time and offered to get me in touch with someone who could hook me up with pain pills, so it wasn't even hard to find a drug dealer to sell me illegal pills. But it is exactly this condition of it beng hard to maintain a legal opiate prescription that drives people to heroin use. If you really want to understand how one makes the jump from pills to H, there is a podcast kevin smith the film director does with Jason mews about Jason's drug addiction and recovery where jay details his progression from casual use to intense heroin addiction. Like many he has an injury that sends him down the pain pill path, but he also had an unusual child hood where his mother was a junkie and turned him into a dealer at an early age. The show is called jay and silent bob get old and you can download it off iTunes. Don't let your kids listen to it if you have any.

According to those roadkill guys on youtube you can even do the engine swap in the summit parking lot (I probably wouldn't try it).

  6. Hey All, So I have these aluminum motorcycle racing pistons. They were in great shape when I got them but I had them stored in a bad part of my storage locker in NY and it looks like an animal got in and pissed on them (smells like it too). Since they sat like this they corroded where the urine was. I have washed them but anybody have a good suggestion about cleaning the corrosion? Do the finishes have to be machined, or can I just hit it with an emory cloth (like a scored piston) and then polish them? They are really rare and I would hate to have to toss them in the trash because of this. Thoughts? (beyond the usual don't store stuff where animals can pee on them).
  7. yes some are the B-team, but some are straight up volunteers who do it because they care about veterans. Again there is always a shortage of volunteers to help out in these areas so if you are able, volunteer when you can because it makes a difference. Manpower is sometimes worth more than money.
  8. Crate engine. Bam. Done. Keep the matching number 396 parts for when he sells the truck later on and someone else wants to restore it. You can get a basic 454 crate engine with a warranty for about $2700 which is about what you are going to spend to rebuild the ancient 396 anyway. It sounds like a flippant answer I know but it's actually the cheapest and shortest way when you factor in all the time and energy you are going to spend to make this run.
  9. ya know, before they were "truck" engines, they were the medium budget engines on most american sedans. just sayin' TT V6 should be interesting. I mean I'd rather see an inline 6 but I'm weird like that. honda's indy cars are TT V6 and so is the new NSX.
  10. It's called Veteran Disability and unfortunately like everything in government it has been bureaucratically fucked to death. It follows the worker's comp scheme so if you aren't legally saavy it's very hard to get everything coming to you. Fortunately there are volunteer groups to help with veteran disability benefits, but they are seriously underfunded and understaffed, so whenever you can volunteer. You are totally right, those 7 kids should get jobs and pay their own way in this world!!!!
  11. who said he wasn't. Life jackets don't swim for you, they just turn you into a buoy subject to the currents. It's also much harder to swim in a life jacket so he might have had to ditch it. Life jackets prevent your unconscious body from sinking to the bottom and keep the weak swimmers bobbing in the waves till the boat picks them up - if there isn't a boat coming then your ass gots to swim for it life jacket or no.
  12. Sadly you can actually get crank windows on more cars than you can get manual transmissions in right now. Carbs - well, I'm pretty sure GM and ford would have kept using carbs well into the 2000s if the EPA didn't kick their ass about emissions - carbs were cheap to mfg and easy to service. In 1990 when Chevrolet had the 4 cam, 32 valve, multiport injected ZR1 sitting on their showroom floor it sat in the same room as a Carb'ed, 307ci, pushrod OHV, caprice wagon. Ford? last year of the carb was 1991. Anyway, back to the GT40 thingie.... So the original GT40s were race cars that required street homologation. And the most recent production GT40 was a "shot fired" that America could still build a supercar that was competitive in the marketplace and high quality. What't the philosophy behind this one? just to say they did it? I'm all for the big three reminding us as to why we like american cars from time to time (in ways other than the camaro and mustang - whose interiors for the money are kinda cheap) but what's the motivation? what is Ford proving with this? Viability of a TT american v6 powered supercar? great, are the going to race it? I'm struggling to see where this is going.
  13. are 11 second street cars all that fast these days? I remember when an 11 second street car would put you near the upper echelon of street racing, and I came from an area where we had guys like Rufus "Brooklyn Heavy" Boyd and Tab Talmadge. Now everybody with an LSx swap is knocking on the 11's, often in cars with no more safety equipment than lap belts. Street cars? real street race cars? that's a single digit proposition. If drag week is to be believed the party doesn't even start till you are in the 8's. Bikes? now a moderately fast street bike is capable of 9 second 1/4 mile times. and that is assuming you can setup and handle riding one of those machines at their acceleration limit. If you ever see what goes into drag racing a motorcycle, there is a hell of a lot of prep just to keep you from looping the thing. 11's? I'd say the car is pretty quick, but not "fast". But it's all semantics.
  14. On audi's it not just throws a CEL but it shuts off the temp gauge. T-stat in the wife's A3 is stuck open and it throws the CEL once a week. Waiting till I have to do timing belt to change it because they buried that sucker deep in the engine. Germans have a strange sense of humor. now back to the bmw question.
  15. sv 650 is an 11 sec bike at a track, prepped, with Rickey Gadson riding. In any old Joe Schmoe's hands it is a 13-14 second bike. And that's from a standing start. Roll on power is not the sv's strong suit - it's a torque down low v-twin mill, not a high rev-ing street legal road racer. The chevy got the jump so he was already out ahead, the sv rider was slow to roll on the power (if you jump fast on a v-twin like that it tends to point the front wheel skyward), and the rest is exactly what it looks like when an 11 second car pulls away from a 14 second vehicle.
  16. It's not whether the engine is aluminum or not, but rather whether the emissions equipment is in place. For example my iron block, iron head jeep runs 195-215 degrees (195 t-stat), but the same exact 4.0l without all the emissions equipment runs 160-180. Why? When they first started putting EGR valves on carbed cars they started getting lots of carbon build up at 160-180 because of the unburnt fuel getting returned. Also unburned fuel tends to burn out catalytic converters. Running at a slightly higher temp alleviates a lot of these issues. Or so I have been told for years. fWIW I tired a 160 t-stat in my jeep years ago and fowled an O2 sensor, switched back and never touched it again. Based on how precise modern engine tolerances are, you want to run the temp the factory says you should be running at peak.
  17. Bank of America - terms were up to $30k for a used car, under 5 years old, under 100k miles, had to be bought from a franchise dealer, $2k down payment, 2.9%. It's a deal they offer twice a year, just watch bankrate.com for when it pops up. Gave me the option of a check but I choose to have the check issued to the dealer because we found a car the day after getting approved.
  18. I ran WW in my GTO for years as a crutch to a poorly designed cooling system. It helped but once the heat soak sinks in it is hard to get it to calm down. Also drag tracks hate it like it is standard coolant (most 1/4 mile tracks want you to run straight water). The best change I made was closing the tolerance between the water pump and the plate to prevent cavitation, switching to a larger radiator (from Harrison 4 core to an alloy 4 core), 160 degree thermostat, Lincoln Mark VII electric fan, and using a smaller wp pulley. Granted you are talking about a BMW and not an old iron and guts carb'ed muscle car but some of the same stuff applies. If you need to reduce by 15 degrees or more then you may need to beef up the systems rather than fine tune with chemicals. I remember listening to Adam Corrolla recently talk about his Paul Newman 300Zx race car and that the car had 3 oil coolers and they had to fine tune cooling to track conditions by blocking them or uncovering them as they raced, maybe you are starting to get into that where you need to increase the oil cooler surface area and the radiator surface area.

    Not to be captain obvious here but it's because actually being on the drug is awesome. Seriously, if it sucked as much to be on them as it did the rest of the time when you are not nobody would do them. I mean it's a pretty flippant answer considering the damage it does to one's life/health/family but really it has to be fantastic for one to want to put themselves through it. Of course once you are chemically dependent then you time off it feels significantly worse by comparison so your time on feels even better, even if overall your quality of life Is declining rapidly. I mean there are several other factors that have to be in play: predisposition, addiction prone, depression, etc...but really people do this shit because inherently people want to feel good and a lot of this stuff feels fucking fantastic. I mean, why do so many people wax poetic about beer? Same kind of concept on a grander scale. Beer hangovers suck if you don't manage them right, alcoholism is a rampant problem in the country too, but in the moment that first sip of an ice cold one on a summer night? The fifth one when you are catching your second wind? The ninth after your boot and rally in the parking lot where the waitress you were going to go home with has walked of in disgust and yet you still feel invincible? Pretty great, right?

    I don't know about staged so much as poorly planned for a documentary. Kinda all over the map and wasn't really focusing on documenting the real problem. It all felt kind of sensationally edited as well, which is disappointing considering I grew up reading nat geo magazine and their frank reporting was the most appealing part (and the titties of the native tribes).
