  1. You can also mix some acetone with the ATF. About 40%-50%. This mix is also good as a penatrating oil on rusty bolts. Old Grandpa trick. It is important to note NOT to spin the engine over until the crankcase has been thoroughly drained. While the stuff (with or without acetone) is good for dissolving rust, broke down oil and other gremlins; it's death on a lubrication system. Ask me how I know.
  2. While you're waiting for someone to buy it, pull the spark plugs and dump about a half cup of ATF in each cylinder. On the chance that the rings are gunked up/froze. I've freed up a couple of motors like this. After a week or two, change oil and try it. Just a few bucks, might work.
  3. Maybe because I grew up in a different era, but I don't quite get it. I love driving almost as much as riding. Time behind the wheel of my truck is good. Commute time isn't as good as sex; true. But not near as mind-numbing as meetings and other parts of the work day.
  4. I've done as little as 3 miles, and as much as 35 miles. Close was ok, especially in winter with a good snow on. Big $$$ will get me traveling farther. And yes I'm a greedy bastard.
  5. Haven't had a chance yet to study it. But the recent (like in the last week or so) law that The Gov signed, that may have changed all that. Don't have any links to it yet, but I'll look on handgunlaw.com later, and tell your mom what I found next time I pick her up. I take it you've never lived on the "shady side" of the law? Just do it, keep it to yourself and go on? Pack the thing secured and un-loaded?
  6. To my knowledge, the worst a "posted" establishment can do is ask you to leave, or call the Sheriff's Dept. to ask you to leave. Work is a different situation, as are P.D. buildings, federal buildings and such. And for what it's worth, even though CCW is legal in bars, I don't. Alcohol + guns...not a good mix in my head.
  7. As "Grandpa" let me tell you why he's doing the right thing by changing his oil. You've run your bike for what, 1000-3000 miles with the same oil? You then let it set for say 3-5 months? Shell bearings or roller bearings; doesn't matter. That oil you let set all winter has unburned fuel, varnish, acid, dirt and other particles and nasties coating them. It will pit them a bit at a time. A fresh oil change while the motor's hot will flush the contaniments out, but not the pits. Those remain and any metal particles/dirt what have you gets into those pits and grind merrily away on whatever mating surface they're supporting. Not good. Oh...doesn't do the seals any good either. I know most of you may buy a new bike every 2 years or so; so any of that doesn't matter to you. I just don't see the point in abusing a motor. Now...if we can just get him out of Wally World's Fram department. And what's this stuff called "underwear" you speak of?
  8. Didn't know your storage routines. I see Fram filters where the crimp is half-assed and other problems. Most of you kids as a rule don't know any better. Rather than see an engine suffer I speak up. Oh...I am a grandpa. All three of my grandsons know Wix is the best. Oldest is 4. If you're lucky enough your grandfather is above ground you might want to discuss that crush washer with him. But it's your bike. Motor on...
  9. My '98 might get the wiring on the handlebars hidden. But my '56 continues to get the top end redone. Repaired the threads on one of the cylinder stud holes and loctited the stud back into place. As soon as machine work is done on my cylinder heads I'll start what assembly is necessary to check for interference of moving parts. Front and rear master cylinders have been removed. drained and are soaking. New rear brake hose ordered. Not the sort of bikes the rest of you might ride, but they both make me grin.
  10. http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=36360 If you're paying outrageous $$$ for a filter you might as well get something better than a Fram (gag...) You can get these at decent auto part stores. (NAPA, not O'Riellys' or other cheap discount outlets). Please double check the p/n to make sure it's right for your bike.
  11. Yeah...FBI, ATF, some city swat team. Students and facility are not allowed to be armed, so they get to stand there and get hacked up for what...5, maybe 10 minutes?
  12. Notice the plastic bags over the mufflers? The seller is meticulous. At $1500 it should go quick.
  13. That's the one with the rotating barrel, isn't it? Do post about the recoil when you get a chance to shoot it; I hear it's easy on the wrist!
  14. If I remember right, that 9 mm is a rebate price.
  15. Got this today... https://t.e2ma.net/message/wri12/soto8i Hope it works. There's also Rural King in Lebanon... http://newsletter.ruralking.com/rkguns/email/2016-11-24/index.html?utm_medium=email&utm_source=email-2016-11-24-black-friday&utm_campaign=black-friday&utm_content=view-as-web-page
  16. I'd stick a timing light on it, fire it up and watch the timing mark on the crank. If it's dancing around erratically (more than 1 or 2 degrees) you're probably looking at doing a timing chain & gear set. Just thought. How's the fuel rail now? Any difference in pressure?
  17. I think what he means is if you have a distributor (not coil packs) have you removed the distributor cap and have someone crank it over while you watch for your rotor button to spin. What year and how many miles on this anyway?
  18. True. But I've played with this in my backyard, and damage past that second layer is substantially reduced. Now that it's just me and the wife, chances of anyone but the target(s) getting some of it is greatly reduced. Wife has her marching orders; in case of a break in she retreats to our bedroom, closes the door and assumes a position facing the door crouched behind the bed and armed. I will not go through that door after she's in there. Like I said...I take this stuff seriously. She's been through similar stuff; she does too.
  19. Carry weapon and home defense are apples and oranges. For home I keep a Remington 870 pump with a 21" barrel and extension tube. Loaded to the gills with first 4 rounds being birdshot and the last two 00 buck. The birdshot won't penetrate drywall to the next room. If I go through that all bets are off; somebody's going to get an boo-boo. Although the sound of a pump racking a round in will make the average home invader/methhead/crackhead rethink his career choices. I've had a front door kicked in; I take these things seriously.
  20. You on their mailing list? They do have some decent sales. Haven't brought anything there yet. I do business in my little hick town with the local shop.
  21. Would that be the shop in Blue Ash?
  22. I have a Springfield 1911 and an early West German Sig P220 both in .45. Anytime I leave the house I take the Sig. While the Sig is not an absolute tack driver it digests any load (including handloads) I feed it. The Springfield is nice, but doesn't fit my hand as well as the Sig. Let me hit the Lotto, and tomorrow I'd buy a new P220. Another one I've shot (in 9mm) is the Sig P320 compact. This is unique in the fact the trigger assembly is serialized and the BATF counts that as the gun. You buy different frame kits and swap it back and forth. Depending on what you think you need, you can go sub compact, compact, or full size. It's offered in .45 also, so Lotto winnings would bring one of those home too. Whatever you choose, practice, practice, practice. Clean and repeat. That's how you develop skill and confidence in it. I've put over 5000 rounds through the P220. I'm decent with it; but the gun's better than I am. Oh...I run vegetable oil in my vehicles.
  23. Cheap is NOT good; true. And I've no idea what you all use in your bikes, but I've found in both my bikes that a good AGM battery is best bang for the buck, My Bastard Panhead has a generator, which is an antique pain in the ass. Even with it, I got 6 years out of the AGM battery with no problems. It still worked in a friend's old bike for another year after I took the pan off the road.
