A coworker had his truck parked at the rental car place and someone got $3500 worth of converters while he was out of town. His insurance covered it, but he was sans vehicle for almost a month.

There are plenty of situations where you can go cheap on a part. In my opinion, brakes are never one of them. If a bike won't go, that's a drag. If a bike won't stop, that's fatal.
