  2. After I left the fire dept. (18AUG2012 @ 0600) I grew mine out for about 1 3/4 years. #1 comment from guys "thats awesome". #1 comment from girls "what's your wife think about that". It's definity a topic of conversation, surprisingly the old people who came in the ER loved it. I got a lot of "you must be eating a lot of vitamins and minerals to have a beard like that". I even got an invite to join the Central Ohio Santa Claus group What did get old was the west side population commenting on how I looked like duck dynasty. I never did watch that show. I had my barber trim my beard with every haircut so it was as well groomed as possible (shaping it evenly while still letting it grow). The wife bought a beard wash that worked well (Bluebeard's was the brand) and I would wash, brush/comb it daily. She liked it but would voice her disdain if I hadn't showered yet...I would get bed beard. Prior to going out or into work i'd run what ever product i was using in my hair through it, helped cut down on the Ted Kaczynski look. I got some beard wax for christmas but just ended up using regular hair product ( American crew fiber or pomade). It was more upkeep than im used to. My beard didn't go straight down, it kind of went down and out. So any food that might drop back onto the plate while eating ended up getting caught in the beard. She let me walk around the house with an entire pepperoni on my face before I later discovered it. I hacked it off in the spring of 2014 knowing that I would be looking for jobs upon moving and, regardless of qualifications, no health care organization would hire someone looking like a methed out biker. I still wear a beard but shave it down to stubble every month. Here it is around Thanksgiving 2013 (i'm on the right).
  3. Congrats on the new car...im not a fan of the BMW SUVs much less M SUVs. But that's why she drives it & not me.
  4. Welcome to CR, i just moved out to Colorado myself.
  5. Say you get the flu but you're not high risk and generally healthy...NBD. But while you're sick you decide to power through it & still go to work, run errands etc. The problem is you're obviously contagious and you'll inevitably get someone else sick. Some of those people you're getting sick could be in the high risk group & could really get throttled. This is the logic behind "everyone should get the flu shot". Getting the flu shot not only helps keep you healthy but helps everyone you come in contact with healthy! Not getting the flu shot turns you into a sort of suicide influenza bomber. The issue is you're not the only one who see's your child. One of the people who you recommended not the flu shot comes over to your house, holds the kid. But they were in the 2 day period where they were sick/contagious but had yet to show signs or symptoms. Your kid just got sick even though you got the flu shot. Suicide influenza bomber just took out your baby. Don't let ISIS win. Get the flu shot.
  6. i am disappoint. How you have changed CR, how you have changed. Based on your original post a cyclocross bike does sound like it would fit the bill. Pop on down to your local bike shop or since you're in Dublin there are a cluster of shops off sawmill that could help you out. Whatever you choose just make sure you fit comfortably ( wrist, hands, neck, shoulders etc) & buy used. Alot of people sink major money into their first adult bike just to have it taking up space in the garage a few years later. This time of year is definitely a good time to buy. And dont be afraid of a bike thats 5-10 years old. I ride 1000-1500mi a year or so & i'm still rolling around on the same used bike I "splurged" on in college... I think it was new in 2002.
  7. My take is that fire/ems guys have already accepted that there is risk in the job. Often times that inherent risk involves injury or death. It's part of the job & you learn about it when you 1st step foot into the academy and you will constantly hear about it until you retire. You take as many precautions, stay educated and train but its impossible to know exactly what you're dealing with in a fire or EMS situation. Nurses on the other hand operate in a "controlled environment" where they feel pretty safe. Nurses really dont enter into the field thinking they'll get hurt or killed. Couple that with the idea of "what was once adequate protection is seemingly less than adequate" and thats where the panic comes in? The real question...where's Tilley patented psychological breakdown of the panic over ebola.
  8. A lot of traffic on this thread. I'm surprised that such a high percentage of CR has wifi in their backwood bugout shelters. But then again how are you going to stay updated with out foxnew.com Srsly though i'm really surprised how health care workers are freaking out on social media. People i've either worked with or went to school with. I should clarify, nurses not my fire/ems guys. I'm kind of disappointed that professionals are letting the hype go their heads. Making a joke to a female nurse about ebola is probably 10 fold more hazardous to your health than the virus is right about now.

  12. You can find The Act of Killing streaming on netflix & on itunes. It is on youtube but without subtitles.
  13. This is some pretty wild shit. Being 100% sincere, i've never seen anything like this. I stumbled upon this after MNF was a bust but I wish someone would have told me about it so I could have made a point to watch it instead of just happening to see it. It'll probably air again so set your DVR's. I'm compelled to say you need to watch this....I feel like its important. The Act of Killing is a documentary that follows the current day making of a movie that depicts the real life genocide of millions of Chinese in Indonesia in the 1960s. But heres where it gets weird. The people making and starring in the movie are the original Indonesian death squad "gangsters" (as they call themselves) from the 60's. They're trying to make the torture and killing in their movie as gruesome as possible...because thats how it originally happened and, in their mind, they're national treasures. In their mind they did nothing wrong. They show no remorse but rather excitement for their previous acts, despite committing crimes against humanity. This is not a political film per se ...it's cerebral in the context that it gets you thinking about the main character. You essentially get to see the whole genocide take place again from the point of view of the person who committed it. It's something more than surreal. The website does a better job of explaining it than i did http://www.pbs.org/pov/theactofkilling/ here's the trailer

  15. Feel free to share whatever you may have! I was in town this past week and spent some time with my Grandma who has photos and drawings dating back to my great, great, great, great, great grandparents. Turns out that our family actually fought in the revolutionary war. All that is interesting to me but not so much to you. So i've got some picture of more "recent" items. The following are a mix things my great grandfather brought back from WWI and things my grandfather brought back from WWII. Various medals; some from the army, some received upon returning home, some off german soldiers. On the back of a few it says "Presented to _______ for serving in the world war" http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_160359_zpsgk0uhkrp.jpg "gott mit uns" meaning "God with us" Looks like a belt buckle and match box covers? Also note the WWI style dog tag attached http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_160426_zpsvtuhrefq.jpg A list of common french sayings. This will be framed. Also note the pineapple guava orange juice that my grandma always has in her fridge http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_161452_zpspst9tyco.jpg http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_161552_zpsaso5fnaf.jpg http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_161808_zpsgfarzrqj.jpg http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_161822_zps1f8toewp.jpg Apparently a Karabiner 43 from WWII http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_145654_zpsb4d28dty.jpg http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_145746_zpsdmcwurcc.jpg http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140919_145945_zpsykyabw8z.jpg

  22. Hi Raymond and welcome to http://www.marianmeijersracing.com! If you like it here you might want to also check out http://www.consumeraffairs.com/retail/meijer.html here's an excerpt about the torture of Beta fish. "Why did they even start selling this precious little Betta fish if they are not even taking care of them? The conditions of Betta fish in my local Meijer is beyond terrible. Half of the Bettas are dead and other half is sick with severe cases of fin-rot and dropsy. The water quality is terrible, their cups haven't even been cleaned in weeks or even months. I even saw some dead bodies already decomposing and algae is growing from within. This is terrible, I felt very angry at their treatment of Bettas. Betta fish are very smart and emotional creatures. I had a few and they can live 3-5 years in good conditions. They dance in the morning to greet you. They are very pleasant fish to have as a pet. I am disgusted by the torture they receive in stores such as Meijer. I beg Meijer to drop the sale of this fish and just sell what you do best (produce, furniture, non-living creatures). Please leave this side of the business. You are not making much and in the process you are killing and torturing these poor little creatures. Please have some heart. There are Petcos and Petsmarts right across the street from your stores. Let them sell live fish. At least they kill a bit less than you..." this one talks about the trials and tribulations associated with buying large amounts of cat food "I went in to the Cascade Meijer to purchase cat food in a very large amount. It was a Saturday. The employee I had spoken to was named Mark. I loaded up my cart to the top with cat food and then was asked about it by a fat little short old man. I told him about Mark giving me permission to clear the shelf since it was the last day of the sale. He scurried off and I thought nothing of it. I was later in the produce section looking at raspberries for my very last item before checking out. I was then cornered by Mark **, an old lady, and the fat old man. ** asked me what I thought I was doing and how I was paying for my load of items. He asked if I had any coupons. He also accused me of lying and said that he had given no such permission to buy so much cat food. I told him that I had indeed spoken to a man named Mark. He told me I could use only 1 coupon for the whole purchase. It was scary because they had surrounded me and backed me into a corner. I started crying and saying that I was donating all of the cat food to two separate cat shelters. More people gathered to stare at me. He treated me like a criminal, like I was stealing. He didn't care - he just shot me down with his cold dead eyes and told me that if I tried to check out, I would be detained by security and they would call the police. I had no idea what to do. I was humiliated because I had cried so loud, which brought attention to me. I was doing nothing wrong. I ended up leaving the store with nothing. I could barely drive home. When I got home, my husband was outraged at how I'd been treated. He called Meijer until he got into touch with the VP! The VP apologized for Mark's behavior and offered to donate 200 lbs of cat food to my two charities of choice! He also told Mark to apologize to my face. I went in with my husband and Mark had us meet him in the very back of the store. I thought that was odd. He had the old lady with him that had helped corner me. She scowled the whole time at us. Mark looked down at the ground and mumbled some BS, not really a sorry at all. It took all my husband had to not punch the loser in the face. Mark ** is a terrible little man. I hear he has been transferred to the Knapp Corner store. He should have been fired. I should have sued him. I have gone through a lot of emotional distress over this. I had nightmares for months afterwards. I didn't shop for 4 months after it happened. I am a shy, quiet, and reserved person. I am still upset by the way I was treated. I won't soon forget the feeling of being publicly humiliated."
  23. THanks for the tips, yea turbo back is def. the way to go. Any recommendations on a quieter exhaust set up? I didnt know this until i researching this specific vehicle but the xt's are actually 0.2" taller than the reg. foresters. It would look much better lowered but not only is there a bunch of snow out there but a lot of unpaved roads.
  24. A while back i bought a dr650. I did a fair amount of mechanical mods but since it was ugly as sin anyways I continued to neglect its looks. Eventually I decided that one of the easiest thing to change was the seat (both for looks and comfort). The OEM seat was tolerable for about 2 hours max. Luckily the OEM fuel tank is so small that you were most likely filling up every few hours anyways. So I searched around & heard some really good things about seat concepts. They were reportedly better value for money & more comfortable than the other options. I paid about 120 with free shipping. You recycle the seat pan & rip off the old cover & foam. I borrowed a small compressor, picked up harbor & freight pneumatic staple gun and found a can of 3M upholstery adhesive in the garage. Having never done anything with upholstering the install took about an hour or so and was really easy. here's the results. Notice the "blue" on the old seat...it was actually a faded purple from 18 years ago! http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/snowdoc83/Mobile%20Uploads/20140907_113900_zpske5hy4gn.jpg
