  2. A little of both, really... The technology behind SDI simply didn't exist, and is still somewhat dodgy today, but in making such a big deal of it, including nifty graphics on nighttime news, the US succeeded in making the Soviets believe it was just a year or two before we could tear up the ABM treaty with impunity. So of course they had to come up with ways to counter, and in so doing, shuffled such a disproportionate chunk of their economy into defense that the population couldn't help but get restless. If it sounds familiar, it is.... Paramount used the concept of "The military chews up so much money that there's nothing left for the commoners" as the basis of Star Trek VI. That said, after the surge of debt caused by WWII (most of which was held by Americans in the form of war bonds), the public debt of the US held pretty constant from 1945 through 1983, at which point it began to skyrocket. Mind you, relatively little of this was actually defense related, but it's amazing how when you give just a little, the whole basket blows up in your face. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JTd2KOgmF9A/ShNh796JkEI/AAAAAAAAAHs/C7rXluniU9A/s400/PublicDebtPurple.gif
  3. Excuse me while I go piss myself in abject terror. :fuuuu:
  4. This. As long as there's no ice, I am happy having two feet of snow if it comes to that.
  5. The Russians went bankrupt trying to catch up to a program that couldn't work with the technology of the time. We went bankrupt not long after trying to get defense contractors to invent it.

    need a new bed

This is a very helpful thing to know!
  7. How is the vertical part which holds the bar connected to the ceiling-anchored uni-strut? Depending on the answer, you might be able to use some allthread to drop the bar to whatever height you need.
  8. Have to remember that most of this shit was designed in the 50's or 60's, when there were far fewer cars on the road, most of them weren't happy going 70mph, and people were generally more courteous.
  9. Was? Kannst du nicht Deutsch sprechen?
  10. What unit of measurement is this image in? Tenths of an inch?
  11. Yeah, this isn't rock. It's... kinda like what my parents listened to in the late 80's in a vain attempt to at least seem sorta with it

    need a new bed

Ok, but where's the "office?" I'm going to be needing a new queen set before long as well.
  13. Depends on who you are addressing... current law indemnifies the client in cases of theft/fraud, leaving the issuing bank on the hook for any bad charges. In the case of debit cards, though, getting your money back can be a real bitch (I was just discussing this with future wifey tonight). Not if you're a Bank of America customer. First sign my card wasn't good anymore was its complete non-existence on my online statement-checking session. I would have been very pissed had I attempted to use it to pay for something (like, say, entertaining prospective clients?) and had it come back denied because it was closed without so much as a phone call. Truth... but again, at least as far as BofA was concerned, they didn't bother trying to call, or if they did, they didn't leave a message on the machine.
  14. Must be new and/or local... last summer I could hop onto any terminal at the NW Library (Hard Rd) without any ID, and I could use the wireless at 4 different Cuyahoga County libraries without fuss, either.
  15. Sounds about right. Just enough to make drivers turn into idiots.
  16. Here's an easy way to take care of this particular problem (and get a few points back): Odd number months: Buy something small, like lunch at Chipotle. Even number months: Wait until your billing cycle turns over so the balance gets reported to the bureaus, but make no new purchases. Pay off the balance as normal, which will also be reported to the bureaus. Rinse and repeat
  17. I'd personally like to see a hybrid built around a TDI engine coupled to an ultracap (rather than NiMH or Lion battery).
  18. Only to a point... if someone buys gas with a duplicated mag stripe, you might get them on camera and have something to go on. But if it's an online transaction made from a public library, McDonald's WiFi, or via TOR proxies, good luck.
  19. 792 last I looked. I was dinged for: - Not enough installment accounts (The car's been paid off for 4 years, and my rent is significantly below market average, so there's no incentive to house hunt until the wedding's done and we're ready for kids) - Not enough revolving accounts (I have two CC's, paid off every month) - Usage ratio (Because the cards are paid off and my limits are high, it's a risk to the banks that I might suddenly go on a spending binge)
  20. If by "high" you mean "More stoned than Cheech, Chong, Harold, and Kumar put together," then yes, I agree with you.
