  1. Frankly, this is what's wrong with the system. Who got hacked? Was it a utility? A big box retailer? The pizza shop on the corner? I know you personally can't do shit about it, but as long as consumers are left in the dark like this, the issuing institutions increase customer anger and make the CSR's bear the brunt of it. Knowing who got sliced helps people determine their own potential exposure... If it's McDonald's, well, no big deal. They swipe my card and it's over with, there's no potential for username/password shenanigans. If it's Amazon's one-click checkout, well, it would be very helpful to tell folks that there could be collateral damage, and changing their passwords is a Very Good Idea (because using the same user/pass for multiple websites is something nobody ever does, right??)
  2. Jer, pretty much this. Granted, changing all your auto-bill pays is a pain, but it beats having to file 50 separate fraud reports.
  3. Similar just happened to me with Bank of America... logged on last night to check my CC, and it wasn't even there! Called and the automated answer bot said "Account has been closed." It took a human to tell me that someone hacked a merchant, and BoA cancelled the account as a precaution. The new number's already online and the cards are in the mail, but ya, would have been nice to have warning, as opposed to logging on and thinking they'd summarily dropped me.
  4. What electric panel specs are generally used by builders these days... amps and poles?
  5. It's really nothing more than a return to Washington's "Leave us the fuck alone, and we won't stick our noses in your shit, either." Going back through history, it wasn't until the Spanish-American War of 1898 that the US did anything noteworthy on the world stage, and even after WWI, isolationism remained the guiding principle of American diplomacy. Not until after WWII, where we were the only industrial nation standing against those dirty Soviets, did we begin "flexing our muscles."
  6. I'm guessing it would probably go like this... Paul - 95% Romney - 5% (Because not everyone here is a conservative/libertarian) Perry - 0% (You mean there's a guy named Perry? I thought it was just a nuke plant!) Huntsman - 0% (Who?) Roemer - 0% (Who?) Gingrich - 0% (Dude named for an amphibian?) Santorum - 0% (Would you like to know more?)
  7. This winter is fail. Usually by now I'm cussing at my all-season LRR tires. This year I'm just grumbling that I threw out the grill blocks after forgetting how to install them.
  8. He should be on this March's primary ballot. That's the first step to getting him on the November ticket.
  9. Battelle's probably up to again.
  10. Sadly Microcenter is no longer carrying IPSG (their house brand) CF cards. Apart from embedded industrial systems (because they're pin-compatible with the parallel ATA standard) and Canon, nobody seems to be using them anymore.
  11. Did you download the same video twice, then save it in different locations?
  12. Check your drivers for both the monitor and the card.
  13. In roughly the order I first played them: Alleycat
  14. Heh, same thing happened to my sis long, long ago... first tooth came out a week before, the second on Christmas Eve.
  15. At least two positions opening shortly: - http://www.expedient.com/company/noc-analyst.php - http://www.expedient.com/company/osc-technician.php No, I don't have numbers (these spots are in a different area from what I do), but I don't think you'll be getting super rich. One position that will be opening is primarily front desk/reception, receiving, and backup tape rotation. The other is more technical, but not sure whether the opening will be a "Windows Engineer", "UNIX Engineer", or "Jack of all trades Engineer".
  16. How does one go about undoing a lossy compression algorithm?
  17. I dunno... the non-MST3k version of any MST3k movie, by definition, has to be pretty bleemin' awful.
  18. The reversing car is stupid for parking in such a location, but unless that car's white reverse lights were out, I would think the car making the turn could be cited for either failure to yield (the reversing car is in the proper lane and in motion, thus has right of way) or assured clear distance (the usual citation you get for rear-ending someone).
  19. Nope, haven't been there since '09. I'm in the old Compuserve building now, running the datacenter
  20. Shakes the whole Emerson building on Pittsburgh when those guys blast. First time they let one off after I started working there, I thought a 1000kVA UPS let the magic smoke out down on the floor.
  21. If I remember right, it was because some Christian fundie group complained that by advertising during it, Lowes was therefore supporting it.
