  1. I will be there - and am signed up to instruct as well. From the way the discussion went at the last event - each instructor may only have 2-3 people to work with.
  2. From the above article: The ACLU SAYS: "As a public school employee, the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and religion don’t necessarily convert inside the classroom. The ACLU of Ohio supports the Mount Vernon Board of Education’s request that Freshwater keep his Bible out of sight when children are in the classroom." Christine Link, executive director of American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio: “The courts have recognized that our teachers have a special position and they can’t use their post to promote [religion].” Exactly how is he "promoting" religion? Link said that as a citizen, the ACLU would defend a teacher’s right to his or her beliefs outside of the classroom. However, inside the school it becomes a different scenario altogether. Exactly when has the ACLU done this for a Christian religion? “The relationship [between teacher and student] is special,” Link said. “The teacher is a hyper-authority figure and they can’t promote religious beliefs or even political views.” Except for "Global Warming" = a political agenda. “If it’s in a desk, locker or in the teacher’s lounge, it would be fine,” Link said. “It is not permissible [to display his Bible] at work. You have to pay the piper when you are at work and follow the rules of your employer. [As a] public employee, [a teacher] has less rights to proselytize their religion.” A Bible in plain site is "proselytizing"? “The school system is doing exactly the right thing,” she said. “It is actually acting in a way that is protecting them from a lawsuit from the ACLU; and if not from us, from some other group. In other words, the ACLU will not only not defend the teachers rites - it prefers the any Constitutional interpretation that snuffs out religious observance. She said the school board does not oppose religion, but that it is “protecting the establishment of religion in schools,” as deemed by the U.S. Constitution. WOW-now he's not just "promoting" but "establishing" religion in the space of one article! I was apprantly a little off on my ACLU definition - ACLLU should be Atheist Civil Liberal Liberties Union. Speaking of unions, where are the NEA and local teachers unions - they love to help incompetant teachers keep their jobs!

    Red Skelton

I assume this was Red Skelton's monologue on the "Pledge of Alegience". Should be required for all kids learning it in school - the first link is bad - but you can also see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6Kt_D4MegM It's too bad we seem to have fewer and fewer people who will speak out on just how great a country we are blessed to live in.
  4. This "separation" of church and state is sooo misinterpereted (and in a one sided way). As Dr. Rick has provided - READ the Constituion - this teacher is NOT the state, nor is he ESTABLISHING a religion. He is practicing his FREEDOM to have a religious book sit on his desk. As far as I have read, he is not forcing anyone to pray, to read this book, nor reading it ti the class, or DO anything else. If you want to keep all religion out of school - try the Soviet Union's Constitution: Article 124 (in part reads). In order to ensure to citizens freedom of conscience, the church in the U.S.S.R. is separated from the state, and the school from the church". Courtesy of Snopes.com And hell yes, where is the ACLU on this one - oh sorry, the ACLLU = American Civil Liberal Liberties Union.
  5. 2nd in class by .045!!! 60.231 to a 60.276 in the rain. 91st in PAX 51st in FTD First event in a long time a kart didn't have FTD - no more rain please!?!
  6. Yep, I'm old - Oh Hell - I was old when the stuff was introduced!
  7. Woody's on McKinley is dirt cheap on rims - fair sized lot - don't know what year you need, their stuff is generally 7-10 years old. Last time I checked $20 for an alloy w/tire.
  8. As far as SCCA goes - it's probably being dictated to them by their insurance carrier. When Snell first started, a lot of their testing revolved around helmets bouncing off of rollcages in cars - hence the round ball type of tests. Technology changes, perhaps Snell hasn't kept up, but it's hard to make that determination from one article. Certainly the relatively small donation a manufacturer makes to the Snell Foundation does not justify a $40-$60 bump in helmet cost. More likely, the big guys have to have more liability insurance, the small importers/manufacturers can just fold up shop and start over under a new name if they get sued. The article is an interesting read.
  9. It is an independent traveling series that travels around the SCCA regions within the Great Lakes Division. In general it is viewed as a good way to meet competitors from other areas and to go up against the best drivers in the division. It is also a great stepping stone to running at the SCCA divisional race or one of the pro tour races. Street Survival: Street survival is a driving class for 16-21 year old drivers. The idea is to put these young drivers in real world situations so they can better learn to control their car. This is NOT a racing class, nor is it a basic driving class. It is somewhere in the middle. This is about safe emergency lane changes, stopping distances, skids on slippery roads and knowing the car and its characteristics.
  10. Register as a member - you just need your membership info when you sign in at the event. You should have it back by then. DLB is just a service the region uses, they don't check membership.
  11. And as a reminder..... First event - Test & Tune is April 13th at Cooper Stadium - two weeks from today! Usually this has a restricted entry to allow more track time, but I didn't see a limit listed on DLB when I checked today.
  12. On the OVR (Ohio Valley Region) under the "Forms" section: http://www.ovr-scca.org/downloads/forms/2008application.pdf Instructions are on the form - along with fees, etc. Not sure where it is on the national site, but just as easy to go through the club the first time. Renewal are easier - national will just send you a bill!
  13. The term "foreigner" has taken on a derogatory meaning. Yes, this country was founded by "foreigners". But as for immigrants, since that is the issue now, and more importantly, "illegal immigrants", we do have laws that need to be enforced. If you want to come here, follow the law. One part of that law (to immigrate and become a US citizen) is learn the language. I saw this report the other morning, the biggest part that steamed me was the immigrant rights activist/attorney that kept saying "the government" needed to do more to teach these people english - BULLSHIT! You chose to come here - know the rules and get it done - it's your PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. If you're not competant enought to know/do this - then stay where you are, we've got enough "natives" (US born-not Native Americans) that don't understand this without adding more government aid candidates to the overcrowded gene pool.
  14. They make a special serated wire you can get at most auto parts stores (not Advance/AutoZone) specifically foe windshiled removal. Take off any trim, force the wire through the sealant, take you time and then "saw" around the windshield. Try to saw parallel to the cut, if not slightly angled out from the glass. Gloves a great idea, possibly pliers to hold the wire. The wrecking yard guys I've seen do it use a couple of old seat belts, loop the wire through the buckles and wrap the staps around thier hands. As I said, take your time, I've also seen these guys cut into the glass if they get in too much of a hurry - or start angling in towards the glass too much. There is another tool with a ninety degree blade and a "T" handle to pull it through - I have one, but lack the talent to uese it without cracking the glass (over and over again). But I can use the wire with great results.
  15. Maybe the "buys ChampCar out" isn't exactly correct - it is listed as a "merger", but wait and see who's running things and what the name of the series will be! Whatever you call it there's still one "winner" - and it looks like Tony George will wind up with what he wanted to begin with, to hold all the cards. I agree we need a single unified series. I think we will get parity and some good racing. Now the question is, can he bring back a variety of chassis and engine manufacturers, or will this be a top tier open wheel "IROC" series? Too bad we can't get the some unification in top tier sports car racing.....
  16. Keep in mind Tony george seems to be in love with the NASCAR business model - imagine the single seat open wheel "Indy Car of Tomorrow". It will be a blow for technology, but we may get better racing. After all, any more it's all about "the show".
  17. The rumors have apparently come true - there will be one series in 2008: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/irl/2008-02-24-merger_N.htm

    ebay strike

My wife had en EBay store for a while - fees just got crazy, and she didn't sell much (fine art & quilts). She has since moved to Etsy.com and has done very well there. This is a unique situation where she found a site that specializes in "handmade" items - jewelry, art, sculpture, etc. I have about ten items on Ebay right now ending SAT/SUN - doesn't seem to be any change in activity on the stuff I've got up from the past couple of weeks to this week. I'd gladly go somewhere else - but it still is the place where the buyers are.
  19. Hey, you gotta love oldies - hell, look at me! I have no problem with giving Maher credit for his work - it does sound a lot like Carlin though. As to my remarks - old guys have to bitch too sometimes!
  20. Original post edited to address the incessant whining - it's humor-just enjoy it.
  21. CARLIN'S NEW RULES FOR 2008 - BILL MAHER'S OLD RULES FOR 2005 New Rule: No more gift registries. You know, it used to be just for weddings. Now it's for babies and new homes and graduations from rehab. Picking out the stuff you want and having other people buy it for you isn't gift giving, it's the white people version of looting. New Rule: Stop giving me that pop-up ad for classmates.com ! There's a reason you don't talk to people for 25 years. Because you don't particularly like them! Besides, I already know what the captain of the football team is doing these days --- mowing my lawn. New Rule: Don't eat anything that's served to you out a window unless you're a seagull. People are acting all shocked that a human finger was found in a bowl of Wendy's chili. Hey, it cost less than a dollar. What did you expect it to contain? Lobster? New Rule: Stop saying that teenage boys who have sex with their hot, blonde teachers are permanently damaged . I have a better description for these kids: 'Lucky bastards.' New Rule: If you need to shave and you still collect baseball cards, you're a dope. If you're a kid, the cards are keep sakes of your idols. If you're a grown man, they're pictures of men. New Rule: Ladies, leave your eyebrows alone. Here's how much men care about your eyebrows: Do you have two of them? Good, we're done. New Rule: There's no such thing as flavored water. There's a whole aisle of this crap at the supermarket, water, but, without that watery taste. Sorry, but flavored water is called a soft drink. You want flavored water? Pour some scotch over ice and let it melt. That's your flavored water. New Rule: Stop screwing with old people. Target is introducing a redesigned pill bottle that's square, with a bigger label. And the top is now the bottom. And by the time grandpa figures out how to open it, his ass will be in the morgue. Congratulations, Target, you just solved the Social Security crisis. New Rule: The more complicated the Starbucks order, the bigger the asshole. If you walk into a Starbucks and order a 'decaf grandee, half-soy, half-low fat, iced vanilla, double-shot, gingerbread cappuccino, extra dry, light ice, with one Sweet-n'-Low, and One NutraSweet,' ooooh, you're a huge asshole. New Rule: I'm not the cashier! By the time I look up from sliding my card, entering My PIN number, pressing 'Enter,' verifying the amount, deciding, no, I don't want Cash back, and pressing 'Enter' again, the kid who is supposed to be ringing me up is standing there eating my Almond Joy. New Rule: Just because your tattoo has Chinese characters in it doesn't make you Spiritual. It's right above the crack of your ass. And it translates to 'beef with broccoli.' The last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to God you weren't pregnant. You're not spiritual. You're just high. New Rule: Competitive eating isn't a sport. It's one of the seven deadly sins. ESPN Recently televised the U.S. Open of Competitive Eating, because watching those athletes at the poker table was just too damned exciting. What's next, competitive farting? Oh wait, they're already doing that. It's called 'The Howard Stern Show.' New Rule: I don't need a bigger mega M&Ms. If I'm extra hungry for M&Ms, I'll go nuts and eat two. New Rule: If you're going to insist on making movies based on crappy old television shows, then you have to give everyone in the Cineplex a remote so we can see what's playing on the other screens. Let's remember the reason something was a television show in the first place is that the idea wasn't good enough to be a movie. New Rule: And this one is long overdue: No more bathroom attendants. After I zip up, some guy is offering me a towel and a mint like I just had sex with George Michael. I can't even tell If he's supposed to be there, or just some freak with a fetish. I don't want to be on your webcam, Dude. I just want to wash my hands New Rule: When I ask how old your toddler is, I don't need to hear '27 months.' 'He's two' will do just fine. He's not a cheese. And I didn't really care in the first place. New Rule: If you ever hope to be a credible adult and want a job that pays better than Minimum wage, then for God's sake don't pierce or tattoo every available piece of flesh. If so, then plan your future around saying, 'Do you want fries with that?' A man of great insight and truth!
  22. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon +1 Yes - Songs Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive Boston - Boston Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell Eagles - Hell Freezes Over OK, I'll quit now - that's a few more than one.
  23. Yes, mostly 220V 3 phase - not available in residential neighborhoods. You can get converters, but best to just get a TIG set up for it already. Paul who owns the place is great, Sean is also very helpful. Not the cheapest place for everything, but they will help you get into most equipment with a little financing if needed.

Price is firm-try to buy them new (or any quality wireset) anywhere for that kind of money. Whatever's left next weekend will go to auction on that other site. I'm on the north side of Columbus near Henderson & SR315 - pickup only-no time to ship them. Thanks! 614-668-5939
  25. As the recovering owner of several Fieros - both street cars and a race prepared ITB car - I can tell you the Fiero has many shortcomings. It's fun to drive on the street, but as a race car, or at the limit, there are many cars that are much better. THe 914 is a neat car, but old German Porsche parts are still expensive, and go to the 6cyl set up and the price can get very high, very fast. Crossle has the MKII MR2, I drove it at the last autocross last year - very nice handling on less than optimal tires. The car has some serious potential that the SCCA has recognized as, if I recall, it is specifically excluded from some of the Street Mod/Street Touring classes. Toyota stuff is relatively cheap and plentiful. Some people seem to think these cars are made of gold - but there are still a few deals to be found if you shop.
