  1. I can't speak to the stuff in your links, but what you describe as your experience sometimes when awakening is called a hynopompic state http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnopompic and, although scary, is fairly well-understood by sleep researchers. Because of my line of work, I have asked many thousands of people the routine question, "Have you ever seen or heard anything that you now know wasn't real?" Probably a fourth of people tell me about hypnopompic experiences, hynagogic hallucinations, or illusions -- none of these things are signs of mental illness and all have fairly simple neurologic explanations. I've found the most common hynopompic hallucination to be people awakening to see someone standing at the foot of their bed or sitting on their bed. Although the hallucination disappears in a few moments, people remember the experience all of their lives.
  2. The banished one sitting in the corner with the buses and vans…. http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae324/SilverTwinOH/Wilmington%20Mile%20-%20Sunday/IMG_6735.jpg So true ....... if the officials would have had rhino boot immobilizers, I'm sure they would have installed them, and would have made me wear the Scarlet Letter if they could. A lot of guys told me today that they loved to see the big car getting a taste of the whip on Saturday, they just wished that the speed would have been announced after the run. I enjoyed spectating today with Crawdad and his daughters and with Alex L. I got to meet 944s2 (Mike) from Dayton and made some other new non-CR friends today as well. Later in the week I'll put some of my photos up. I'm very pleased this has come to Ohio. Next race will be the first week in June. I'm beginning to wonder what the brave little Viewt would run ....... http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/emoticons/confused0006.gif
  3. Spectators are supposed to stay out of the pit area, but the cars spend almost all their time in the staging line, which is right next to the spectator area. So spectators are right on top of the cars most of the time. There aren't bleachers, so bring a chair. You'll have a great view of the first half-mile, and you can park very close to where you sit. It's a friendly place ..... most everyone will welcome questions about their cars and photos.
  4. Yessir, you've got it. This was all discussed in an earlier thread, and a few members came to the same conclusion -- not worth it. But I had fun anyway. (see page 2 of this thread: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96408&highlight=wilmington ) Much stricter than Texas, but a lot of the same crowd, just closer to home. Yeah, I'm going this morning but I have to leave for home by around 2 p.m. or so. If you need a ride, call me early 740-405-5565. Feel free to call if you want to meet up after you arrive. It's a big place (scattered along a nearly two mile runway), so don't count on immediately finding someone else. I would take along a warm hat and gloves, not just a light jacket. Most people ended up wearing the extra clothes to be comfortable in the wind. There were 3 food vendors until the rain, then 2 left. I don't know how much will be available today .... maybe pack a sammich just in case. Also, my nav didn't take me to the right spot at all. First, avoid going through Wilminington on the way there. It's much faster to take SR 72 South from I-71 (Sabina-Jamestown exit), then US 22 west to SR 73, then turn right on Airborne/Airport Road. Bear left to stay on Airborne Road. You'll have runways on each side of you, and there's an entrance to the left with people standing by the fence and two small orange event signs in the grass.
  5. A dubious distinction. I'll have to ask Keith (the Racing Director) tomorrow if I was actually the first one booted. I was in staging lanes all day, so I don't know if anyone else was thrown out. It would surprise me to learn that I was the first at Wilmington, but maybe.
  6. Oh, and it's the speed that's important, not if you're WOT. I just knew that the Bentley at WOT was going to break the rules. There was an antique Kaw 350 which at WOT, according to the owner, only does 86 mph.
  7. The rule book is nearly 200 pages. I have copies at the hangout. It's quite a read. The spirit of the rules is that you should have reasonable safety equipment to go a certain speed. Most street vehicles are considered okay up to 135 if they have the basic factory safety equipment, nothing clearly unsafe (leaks), and you have a Snell 2005 or newer car helmet (the Snell 2005 motorcycle helmet does not pass). For my car to run over 135, it would require a roll cage of a specific design, I would need a race suit, gloves, boots (all of these things have to meet a particular racing standard). As the speeds go up, required systems include fire suppression, reinforced rails, fuel cut-offs, certain tire designs, etc. I broke the rules and by agreement, I forfeit. The organization's reasoning is that I didn't have the required equipment to be safe. It doesn't help to argue the point, the rules are clear, and the officials' are not going to allow you to blatantly disregard their rules and their authority. My thinking is that the Bentley has better safety features than most cars, is designed with a top speed from the factory of 200 mph, and is not inherently unsafe at that speed, even without a roll bar. It's my opinion, I was willing to take a risk of operating it on an airport runway at WOT, and accept the consequences. Was I foolish? Perhaps I was. Would I do it again? Yep. :fuckyeah:
  8. Over 135 requires additional safety equipment (cage, for example). So I was only officially allowed to go 135. A number of the staff gave me the indication that I could go perhaps up to 150 or 160 without serious sanctions. However, apparently I trapped 162 while braking. (My speedo showed 175 and rising when I let off, but I suspect my speedo reads higher than the actual speed.) The ECTA President is also the timer, and he wasn't amused. BOTTOM LINE: Approved to 135 Trapped at 162 Had clearly been going faster = booted with vigor
  9. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/images.jpg Dis-inspected, number revoked, dis-qualified from the class http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/ECTAsticker.jpg Bentley no longer welcome at any ECTA competition. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/smilie.jpg I guess I took a little too much liberty with the unofficial okay to speed it up. I went WOT on my second run today, but let off before the traps so I wouldn't get ejected before my planned runs tomorrow. Apparently an official saw me let off and saw me hit the traps with the brakes already on. I understand that I went through the traps nearly 30 mph over the maximum for my safety class, and the fact that they knew I had been going faster seemed to be the last straw. No time slip, just "report to the Racing Director" was what the scowling ECTA President said in the shutdown area. The RD yelled, "Are you the dickwad in the Bentley who just ran throught the traps at 162?" I said "Maybe, but I can't be sure, since I wasn't given my timeslip." He then proceeded to explain the sanctions, remove my numbers, "annote" my stickers, told registration to pull my certificate, and showed me the gate. This was what I expected eventually to happen, but my lack of restraint caused it to happen today instead of tomorrow. He really had to do all that. Their insurance company had a representative at the track, and the rules were clear and repeatedly explained. The staff sound like nasty people, but they really are not -- they have a job to do and a standard to set. After the little show was over, a number of the old timers and 200 club members shook my hand, patted me on the back, even gave a high five. I was told I was welcome back tomorrow, but as a spectator.
  10. I've weighed-in on this subject before: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1099778&postcount=4 I really think CR should compile a compendium of all subjects upon which I've commented, index it with hotlinks, and help you all along the road to automotive enlightenment (while saving me the bother of having to repeat myself). :fuckyeah:
  11. I was the second to run after the rain delay. The racing director took me aside, and said with a wink, I think you're through with the rookie passes, so I'm in staging now for a run at WOT. We'll see what this jalopy will do.
  12. A few said they may come to the Ohio Mile after C&C. The track is dry and we are running. Dress warm, as it is cool and windy.
  13. I have both the 2011 and 2012 rule books at the hangout. You can borrow them anytime you'd like. Tech guys are cordial, but very strict.
  14. Here's a teaser of shots from today. I must have taken a hundred car photos but don't have time now to process them. It's been a great day. Lots of new friends, plenty of great cars (some regulars at Bonneville and the Texas Mile), lots to learn. They talked me into actually racing in a class instead of time only. I'm actually going to do the rookie thing. We'll see how that goes. It's looking like rain tomorrow, and if it's soaked all day, I won't make the trip. However, they seem dead set on getting the runway dry if there's just passing rain. I figure Sunday for sure. Come on down to spectate. Food vendors, friendly peoples, lots of great cars. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/rails.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/slot.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/Gremlinrear.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/Gremlinfront.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/blackcaddy.jpg What's that? A Viewt in the Ohio Mile? http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/Jagfront.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/sidejag.jpg There were these two young fellas, very polite, said they were from Alabama and wanted to know everything about the Bentley. I gave them the tour of it and asked them if this was there first rodeo ......... then they showed me their car: http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Ohio%20Mile%202012/Hinsondoor.jpg I recognized that name ..... 2246 hp from their C5! http://hinsonsupercars.com/t-CorvetteC5Racecar.aspx
  15. Great intro and an impressive home-build. I hope you make it out to some of CR's events. + rep
  16. Every weekend? Not by a long shot. Here's the Ohio mile 2012 schedule: April 28-29 Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge June 2-3 (Sponsor to be announced) July 7-8 (Sponsor to be announced) Sept 29-30 Throttle Nation Top Speed Challenge This is the link to more details: http://www.ecta-lsr.com/ Here are CR threads with further discussion: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96408&highlight=ohio+mile http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100845&highlight=ohio+mile To answer your specific question, No, you can show up Saturday, tech Saturday, go to the driver's meeting, and run on Saturday. However, you need to be a paid participant, and those spots sold out months ago.
  17. Tim, thanks for posting this reminder and the schedule. Just to avoid misunderstandings, I think I should point out that the actual racing schedule is Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weather permitting, and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weather permitting. Although spectators can come on Friday, they should be aware that there won't be any racing that day, only vehicle inspections, a rookie orientation, and slow drives down the track by participants. Also be aware that some grass areas have navigational lights mounted low to the ground; it will cost you $600 for any that you break by driving over them. I'll be heading down Friday late morning if anyone wants to check out the place and the cars while I get the car teched-in and go through my orientation.
  18. What do you mean? That IS my smile.
  19. Good pics, Y Kim. And you've definitely captured my characteristic effervescence ..... quite a feat, considering I usually don't photograph well.
  20. I had a great time today. I showed the Century and had many, many people with questions and compliments. I think IPO has the best car show I've participated in. The crowd is courteous and numerous people (staff and spectators) actually thanked me for bringing the car to display. The judges were also friendly, took the time to thoroughly look over the car, and were quite knowledgeable about JDM's. I saw around 30 CR folks there. Kevin (KD93R1) had a beautiful RX7 which took first place in its category. Did anyone get photos to post? I spent nearly all my time at my car answering questions. I'm looking forward to the Sept IPO.
  21. A cool but dry day ..... should be a good time. If you come out, stop by and say hi. I'll be in the Car Show area with the black Toyota Century.
  22. Alex and Tina deserve praise for their driving today, not to mention Cordell breaking into the 11's on motor only and Jones having remarkably good times considering his limited skills (BTW, I owe you a Jackson). Really fun for most everyone today -- almost no break-downs. I had a great time.
  23. I'm entry #9859, in case there's more than one Flying Spur there. Come up and say "hi."
  24. No need to pollute this thread with your personal hygiene issues .....
  25. Jeez, guys, it's just a track day ..... it's not like it's a wedding or anything ...... that was 2009.
