  2. Mahle and I got the decals on the WRC for the Rally next month, so I snapped a few photos to use with our fundraising efforts. Not very fancy, but it conveys the general look. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/WRC%20Rally/front.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/WRC%20Rally/left3qtr.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/WRC%20Rally/rearquarter.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/WRC%20Rally/sidebw.jpg

  6. Fair enough. I'll rep you in due time as well.
  7. :nopics: Well, jump'n'fall, you're off to a great start. Things can take a turn for the better if you post some photos. Here's how: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1743 I cringe to think of what you might do to a 60's Studebaker or a 70's Benzo. However, it's a diverse group of car people here, so I'm trying to stay open-minded. Withholding rep until I see photos of what you've done so far to your Lexus while it awaits the 2jz swap. Welcome.
  8. Sonic :barf: That's just gross. You pick the weirdest places. I'm headed to the Ethiopian restaurant to have some fermented goat brain stew. Maybe catch up to you all later.
  9. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/super-moon.jpg Click for soundtrack: Saturday night around sunset should be a good time to observe the moon at perigee (the closest it gets to earth this year). Since it is a full moon and at perigee, it's commonly called a Supermoon. It should appear 14% larger than it does at apogee, and it should appear about 30% brighter. Viewed when it is low on the horizon (around 8 p.m.) and with foreground objects, an optical effect will make it appear even larger. Last year on March 19th, we had the closest Supermoon in over 20 years (dubbed an "Extreme Supermoon"). If you missed that one, you've got another chance at a Supermoon tomorrow. The next moon to be as bright won't occur until August 14, 2014.
  10. Glad to hear you have dry roads ..... should be a big meet tonight then.
  11. There's a bit of a storm coming in from the west .... I hope it has passed by 8, elsewise that will be a very interesting dinner at Sonic. I'll try to make it to Piada at 8 just 'cause I miss seeing Erica.
  12. The ECTA officials are meticulous about inspecting and cleaning the runway, but they said at the drivers' meeting that there was virtually no cleaning to do -- it is kept that clean routinely. They were very pleased with Wilmington. The runway is grooved perpendicular to the direction of travel. It dried very quickly after the rain, even though the temps were low. ECTA members drove their pit vehicles up and down the runway to help it dry. I was very impressed with the runway condition. Something else which might surprise folks is that no burnouts (anywhere) are allowed. It was very different watching the cars launch slowly, and some even were pushed by pit vehicles to start the run. No starting lights, no staging beams, and the staging official gives just two starting signals: visor down sign, then simply points down the runway, which means begin when you want.
  13. Yeah, they cheered me on, gave me flowers: http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1551005&postcount=40
  14. Set destination in the nav system to shutdown lane coordinates. British female voice announces, "You have arrived" as you clear the trap.
  15. The runway is still being maintained for use, although it currently isn't used; the airport has other active runways receiving very light use. I believe there is a longer runway used to land planes for repair at the facility. We were instructed not to litter anything, even something as small as a piece of safety wire, because of the potential of that getting into a jet turbine engine. The surface is the smoothest I've ever driven. At the dragstrip and on the highway the Bentley picks up a slight road vibration above 100, but at Wilmington it was rock steady even at an indicated 175. Honestly, it felt the same as it did at 55 and still had a lot left if I'd had more track. Newbs are to progress gradually to their safety limit. Non-cage cars are limited to 135, so the first run is limited to 125 (they allow a little variation, because they want you looking up across the hood, not down at the gauges). After you're told you're good (meaning you demonstrated control of your car, followed the direction of the starter, kept well between the cones, kept your head high, smoothly transitioned to shut down without any drama), then you're allowed to advance as high as your safety equipment limit.
  16. Nope, that wasn't me. I did my rookie run within the rules and got an okay from the Racing Director to go faster. I think my rookie run was 118 (I was limited to 125 on the first run). I'm glad I didn't get a lifetime ban for that second run I made.
  17. I just got my new Garmin nüvi 2555LMT yesterday and started using it today. Great unit. $219 on amazon, may be able to find one elsewhere for your budget figure of 150. Heavy on great features (e.g., real-time traffic updates, construction info, lifetime map updates) that work easily. Take a look a some reviews, see if it fits your needs.
  18. Spectator cars http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/chevyon2wheels.jpg I hadn't seen this one before (on a '56 Chevy antenna, IIRC) http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/stripper.jpg Standing on the starting line, looking over to the staging line (2 lanes, usually a 2-3 hour wait each time) http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/startlookingatstagingline.jpg In final staging area, looking towards the starting line http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/stagingnearstartingline.jpg At the starting line, looking directly down the runway http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/straightdowntrackfromstartingline.jpg Beginning of the trap (130 some feet, IIRC). Speed is calculated by the time it takes to pass through the trap. http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/beginningoftraplookingtowardsshutdown.jpg Typical drivers' meeting (175 drivers plus crews) http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/driversmeeting.jpg
  19. Lots of photos from the Ohio Mile posted all over the place .... much better than my pics, but I'll put a few more here if I didn't already see a similar one. Also, at the end, I took some pics from on the runway itself to give you a driver's view of things. First, some of the competition (sorry if duplicates from other threads): The "ice cream truck" is actually a Crosley http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Crosley.jpg Lots of power here -- what a shame he had to shut it down at 135 ... http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/Caddyengine.jpg Sharp little Karmann Ghia http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/karmannghia.jpg You gotta love the Crown Vic http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/crownvic.jpg The place was thick with Studebakers http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/orangestudebaker.jpg http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/orangebike.jpg Didn't race, but was one of the nicest pit vehicles http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r445/martyr65/oldpitvehicle.jpg
  20. for a proper introduction. I hope to see you at some CR events this spring. + rep
  21. Yep. You're still stuck back in that trying-to-be-logical mode. There were contraptions there that I would be afraid to take over 30, but they were, by the rules, ok'd to do 150-175. It's about rules with these guys, not about what's logical or reasonable. That's one criticism that I had heard about them for years -- they don't adapt to the changing technology and they'll go the way of the dinosaurs. A Veyron, on its first trip down the track Saturday, would be limited to 125. All later runs could go to 135. Faster would be considered "unsafe." :lolguy: This was all hashed-out in the CR thread months ago when it was first announced that Wilmington was a go for the ECTA. That's why people concluded that without a cage, it was either a glory run and get booted, or else not worth entering.
  22. It was good meeting you and your buddy, Mike. I'm glad to came up to me and spoke. Yeah, the Busas really rule that event. It's a lot of work pushing a bike around in the line all day, but some of those old geezers did it, and a few did it without their pit vehicles nearby for them to sit in and get warm. Hats off to those who put up with the cold, wind, rain and still got some runs in.
  23. 1) Not sure of my top speed; a very fast glance at the 3/4 marker looked like 175 to me, but I don't trust any factory speedo to be accurate that high. I got no time slip, and the trap speed wasn't announced, but when I was getting yelled at by the Race Director he said I went through the trap at 162 with the brake lights on. I was, in fact, trying to get it down to 150 so that I would get a warning but not get booted. 2) I loved the event, but like any event, you have to judge it for what it is, not for how you'd like it to be. This is a group of mostly close-knit old timers from Maxton, some of whom also go to Bonneville regularly. A few of the real old timers ran around the time of Burt Munro (World's Fastest Indian). They're almost all great people. They come from Alaska, California, Maine, Canada, Texas. They might cut you a little slack here and there, in a friendly way, but you're not going to steamroller over them at their own event. They really don't care if you like it or not, this is the way they do it. 3) I don't build anything. It's a matter of what I buy. I admire people who do their own builds, but it's not work to which I am suited. I don't own anything other than the Bentley that's going to be impressive at a mile. I've thought of seeing what the 999 will do, but that would just be for the experience of riding it that fast. If I entered the Viewt, it would be for comic relief. I'll most likely just spectate for the 3 remaining events of 2012. I think it would be more fun if we took a big group from CR there, set up a shelter, cooked out, and had a good time. Get away from the group when you want to talk with the drivers/come together at the shelter when you want to jaw with your buddies. Heck, it's only an hour from Columbus, cost for the whole weekend of spectating is only $15 ($10 for one day), young kids get in free, servicemen get in free. Hard for me to imagine skipping this if you're into fast cars or into car shows.
  24. I never got the chance to ask the team that question, but it broke 200 on Sunday. Yep, CR stock. No, just 93 from SpeedWay. They have race gas and some other fuels available from a vendor there, and there are (of course) lots and lots of rules about that. Changing fuel changes your class. Yep, lots of awards based on your class. I think there's also special recognition for new 200 mph members as well. All the records from Maxton were retired, so running at the first event was your best chance to get an award.
