  4. Antique firearms are not considered 'firearms' by the BATFE. They must be 100 years old to be considered and antique. In Ohio, you cannot SHIP any firearm to a non-FFL holder. You can do a face-to-face transaction in Ohio for any firearm without involving an FFL.
  5. Centerfire Systems has the some of the best prices on the Rock Island 1911 pistols. My friend has one and I can tell you that it feels good and shoots great. Very nice pistol and for $400 it was a bargain, IMO.
  6. What are you buying it for? That might help narrow down the field...
  7. Pepper spray would be better but I'm sure you could have legally shot an attacking dog. You are not going to be able to out run it!

Those are really cool. I love the Russian optics. They are so clunky and utilitarian - and HEAVY.
  9. You're right. Then the female would sue you and win.
  10. Plywood won't last very long. The local range I frequent uses steel posts with an angle iron cross bar and then hangs large sheets of thick (1/2"?) rubber with simple wire hangers. You can staple targets to the rubber. The cross-bar works well for hanging other types of targets, too, such as armor plate steel targets, golf balls, etc.
  11. You will need a very large dirt backstop. 15-20ft tall would be a good height at 100yds. Keep in mind that it will erode over time so you maight want to make it a little taller to begin with. The higher the better. Best thing to do is rent a bulldozer, locate your shooting lane, and then use the dozer to scrape the lane and pile up the dirt at the end. You'll end up with a down sloping lane ending in a giant backstop. You may need to plan for drainage in front of the berm using some stone and tile. Can I come play when you get it finished.

Be careful when you install the lens, the glass cracks VERY easily. The thin metal portion that slides over the scope was slightly bent on my first one and when I tried to bend it back to fit around the scope the lens cracked. Most of the Russian and Romanian military stuff is practically bomb proof - not this lens... lol. Here's what the Czech ammo looks like.... http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo011.htm This site has plenty of data on the various types of 7.62x54R surplus - identification, performance, ballistic coefficients, etc. http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmoIDII.htm

lol... It's a fairly powerful rifle. You need a good backstop and a lot of distance anyway. The ballistics are very close to the 7.62x51 (.308) round. I really like the fact that you can still use your iron sights with the scope in place. Nice feature. What type of ammo are you going to use? If you can find some of the Czech ammo from the mid-sixties (silver tip) or even the later copper washed cases from the late 80's, buy it. It comes in the greenish cardboard boxes. It's very consistent and is the second best type of surplus that I've ever shot out of my PSL.

So did you shoot it yet??? Make sure you stick with the light ball ammo (~150 grain). There have been a few cases where PSL rifles were damaged when people used the heavy 182 grain bullets.

Lol. Pretty sporty isn't it. It's not Russian, though, it's Romanian. The Russian's don't use the PSL rifle, they use the SVD Dragunov which is quite different even though it looks similar and uses the same cartridge. I can't afford a real Russian Dragunov but I have the next best thing - an exact copy made by Norinco (North China Industries)! The NDM-86, also known as the Type 79 Sniper rifle in the Chinese military... http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/NDM-86/ndm.jpg Here's my PSL54C for comparison...this one has a slightly larger Russian 8x42 PSOP optic, though. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/PSL54C/IMG_2563.jpg

Great rifles. You are going to need to get the rubber eyepiece if yours didn't come with it. It positions your eye for the proper eye relief and will protect you from "scope eye." http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/rubber-eyepieces-for-posp-fixed-magnification-and-all-ppo-scopes.html The amber lens caps are nice, too, and originally came with that Romanian TIP-2 scope... http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/accessories/for-posp/amber-glare-reducing-filter-for-posp-scopes.html A nice PSL action shot.... http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/PSL54C/1_G.jpg

    Advice needed

One thing lasers are good for is dry fire practice. You can hold the laser on a fixed point and easily tell if you are pulling it off target with your trigger squeeze. For defense shooting, they are really not very helpful. Fun to play with, but not very practical. As you mentioned, you'll be focussed on the target - or should be - not on where the laser is.
