There are tactics to using lights properly. However, going so far as to say "it will just give your position away" is an oversimplification. Please tell me you guys aren't so ignorant as to click the bang button on a target you haven't identified properly right?

FYI, I borrowed a surefire vert grip/light combo for a class. 2 things happened. 1) Ken Hackathorn made fun of me all weekend long for even having a $500 light 2) guys on either side of me during the night shooting didn't bother using their lights it was so freaking bright.

You could do the whole "duct tape, surefire g2, and a tapeswitch tailcap" solution. It wouldn't be pretty, but it would work. Like flounder said, there are lowlight tactics to consider. Yes. Some use regular .223/5.56 lowers, others use proprietary lowers. I think Cavarms either has, or is coming out with, a pistol caliber lower that takes glock mags. They also make AR's in .50beowulf, .450 bushmaster, 6.8spc, 6.5 grendal, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, etc.....

It can, but its not supposed to. You can bet tumbling bullets due to having the wrong combination of bullet weight, velocity, and barrel twist. Typically, slower twist stabilizes lighter bullets better and faster twist for heavier bullets. Most AR's are either 1/9, 1/8 or 1/7 twist barrels. 1/9 is supposed to be good for 55gr to 68gr or so, 1/7 for 62-80 gr stuff. I've had 1/9 barrels that did great with 77 gr stuff and I've seen them do terrible with 55gr. Bolt guns (223) typically end up in the 1/9 to 1/12 range.

Note the word "reasonably" in what I posted. Is it going to shoot MOA? Nope, are you going to be able to hit a milkjug? probably so.

9mm out of a 16" barrel does reasonably well out to 200yds or so.

Obviously, you have done some reloading. That's all well and good. My point in not recommending it was I've seen a TON of problems with reloads in the AR platforms, and most of those coming from your average hobby reloader. Guys shooting the service rifle stuff or match rounds for long range like flounder does is something different. Typically, they have a crapload of experience and some killer equipment (like a dillon 1050) Show up with reloads at a carbine course and be ready to sit out while everyone else shoots. There is a reason they have those rules. I'm not saying its not doable, or you can't save money. I'm saying that while starting out on the AR platform its not worth your time.

The beauty of the AR platform is its expandability. I can add a 9mm upper and get better accuracy, better quality, higher capacity magazines and when I get bored, switch back to 223. The hipoint carbine is the rare exception in the hipoint line, but its certainly not the end all be all in pistol caliber carbines.

I've seen WAY too many problems with reloads in the AR platform. So unless you have a dillon 1050, and are a master at using it, don't waste your time. If you want cheap, get some wolf. It's more likely to go bang every time than your average reloaders crap. FWIW, I grew up reloading so I'm not speaking out of ignorance to how its done and the quality of the ammo.

Avoid the Tier 1 vs Tier 2 rifle discussions, its painful. The 800$ AR will be just fine for your purposes. Look for a RRA, Bushy, CMMG, Stag, LMT, etc... M4 and be done with it. That should be 800-900, make sure you get an iron sight (probably a troy or arms #40 vs the carry handle). Use the extra 100-200$ and buy mags. I prefer USGI spec mags , lots of folks are going crazy over pmags these days. Either are fine. Don't pay more than $10 a mag. For ammo, hit Kames every now and then. They've had the best prices I've found on XM193 spec ammo when they've had it on sale.

Probably to avoid having a pistol grip. It has a muzzle break vs a flash hider too. I'd guess it was built in a state with a state specific AW ban that was based on "evil features".

Building isn't necessary. You can save some money, and it allows you to customize every component to get it exactly the way you want. Hit the gun shows and see what you can find.
