If you don't hit cones or spin once in awhile, you aren't testing the limits. Just don't make it a habit.

Really like that R1.

Thanks guys. I just started riding a couple years ago and this is my first bike. The pictures make it look a bit nicer than it is, but for a 34 year old bike, it is still very nice. Not a show bike but a nice regular ride. I have about $2,000 into it. Bought it off of craigslist for $1,000. It was dirty as hell but ran good, the paint was good, the tank was clean inside, the chrome had very little pitting, and it had new tires. Had some ugly pipes on it and a stupid looking king and queen seat. $250 for a NOS seat, $300 for some used pipes, and then the rest was minor repairs and maintenance. I had the guys at WBS Fabrication rebuild and sync the carbs, and fix a couple other little things. I also have a 1975 GL1000 that is a bit cleaner overall, but needs about $1,500 of parts, painting, and minor repair to be a reliable rider. I hope to get to it this year, but with two kids in college the discretionary funds are a bit low!

Gives me an excuse to get moving on Saturdays. Great idea. OVR SCCA is having a Test 'n Tune autocross on April 4 at National Trails. Meet up out east, and caravan out. I have the #81 Civic, white, and will be there early. I will be happy to accomodate CR members wanting to check it out, giving rides and so forth. I also have an enclosed trailer and canopy in the event of inclement weather!

Agree with Cav. Do a search on "How to buy a used motorcycle" so you know what to look for. That $1000 bike can easily become a $2000 bike by needing things like tires, battery, chain, carbs rebuilt, electrical gremlins fixed, etc. particularly if you have to pay for the work.

Have taken the suspension all apart and bought parts.

BOTH SETS OF WHEELS ARE SOLD Eibach Springs and Tires are remaining http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/31rx7/Junk/CIMG2162.jpg Tires are a set of Bridgestone RE01R's in the ever-popular 195/50-15 size. These are GREAT autocross / performance tires and will last more than one season. They are around 4/32" tread depth, and I found out the hard way that they just start to really work at this depth. The nice thing about the RE01R's is that they just keep getting better and better the more you run them, right down to where the tread goes away. If you are looking to upgrade from regular street tires, these are they way to go and save you 50% over new. Bridgestone RE01R's Price: $250 Eibach Springs: Still have the 0600.250.550 Eibach Springs. Will be on eBay later today/. Eibach Springs Price: $60 / pair http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r228/31rx7/Junk/CIMG2163.jpg The reason I am selling all this stuff is to help finance new pieces / parts as I am playing with a new setup. All items are here in Hilliard OH. Prefer local pickup but willing to ship at buyers expense and / or meet buyer within 60 miles or so of Hilliard. Can accept PayPal, Money Order, Personal Check, Cashiers check. Checks must clear before pickup or shipping. Email me for more questions or my phone number to discuss. Thanks. Rich

I am willing to bet that for most of us, our priorities would change during the course of 10 years so by the time we saved the money we would spend it on something else.

http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/index.php Decent owners site on Mini's. You have to sort through all the "I love my Mini" and "The Mini is the best car ever" kind of posts, but there are more objective posts on the weak points of the car as well as what to look for in a used one. The '05 and earlier seem to be more troublesome. As Doc notes, they do hold their value. I've yet to see a really cheap one even on eBay.

A solid Miata is a good track day car. They are easy on brakes and tires.
-
Craig, I am LMAO because most all of us have done this at one point or another. Better yet is when you are the lead car and start watching the car behind you catching you, and then drive straight off the track. "Drive with the windshield, not the rear view mirror".
-
This is a typical turn on a road course. The elevation change adds a little spice, but is not all that radical. A car with high limits like the A8 inspires false confidence in drivers, and then when they exceed the limits they don't know what to do and bad things happen. He should have known he went way deep on the prior turn, a right hander to enter the S, and was way over on the left side of the track when he should have beeon the right side. He was then not set up properly for the left hander; he should have realized this. He then could have driven straight off through the grass and re-entered the track a couple hundred yards down, and been on his merry way. Instead, he realized he was too deep in the right hander, turned HARDER to try and get back, causing the rear of the car to come out, inducing the spn which took him backwards and sideways into the tire wall. I didn't look that close, but I am betting that he also hit the brakes when he tried to turn, further inducing the spin. Even with a slower car, you can do the same thing. You just won't slide as far or spin out as quickly. Had he been driving a cheap POS, he would have spun but would have only slid halfway to the wall. The key is to build up your speed very slowly and incrementally. And, have somebody that knows something be giving you advice and instruction. Stuff happens fast and you need to understand what happens as you approach and exceed the limits.
